The Aegean Coast region

The Çeşme area is located on a peninsula on Turkey's Western coast on the Aegean sea. It has a typical Mediterranean climate. The summer season begins in April and continues until the end of October. Winters are mild and it's possible to swim in the hot thermal spring water all year round.
Cesme is an hour's drive from Izmir, Turkey's second-largest city, with its museums, shops and seaside promenades and restaurants. If you plan to use local transport, frequent buses and local shared taxis (Dolmuş) go to Izmir
Ephesus, Turkey's most famous archaeological site, is about two hours drive and a must for a day trip. Extensive remains of the amphitheatre, temples, library, streets and houses have been uncovered. In Selcuk - the City of St John - the citadel and Basilica of St John and an archaeological museum are to be found and after visiting the historical sites visitors can wander along the picturesque winding streets of the town and browse in the bazaars. Other important historical sites in the region are the house of the Virgin Mary and further afield, Pergamon and Aphrodisias.
The Cesme area
The Çeşme area has something of everything for all ages.
For those who enjoy the water, Venus bay, just a few minutes walk from the villa is a safe and sheltered sandy-bottomed bay with both shallow and deep entry points. Ilica beach 2 kms from the villa, is the best soft white-sand beach in the area and stretches for 1.5 kms along Ilica bay.
The waters are shallow and at points warmed by hot springs. Just past the beach there is a sailing school at Yildiz Burun (Star point) where you can also soak in the hot thermal waters of natural pools by the sea. Scuba diving is possible and there is a scuba diving school located at Altin Yunus hotel (the Golden Dolphin Hotel) between Ilica and Çeşme.
Many restaurants and bars are to be found including Altin Kapi (The Golden Door), Doner and Grill restaurant, at Şantiye, on the edge of Ilica, 2 kms from the villa, and in Ilica itself, Dost Pide, Çeşme's most famous Pide restaurant. There are numerous local fish restaurants to be found in nearby Şifne.
For a touch of sophistication, cocktail hour on the Sheraton hotel's pier on Ilica beach is an unforgettable experience. If you're not watching your weight the delicious cakes served on the terrace at the Golden Dolphin are not to be missed.
There are more hot thermal springs at Şifne 1.5 kms from the villa. There are two large thermal outdoor swimming pools and an indoor thermal pool at Şifne thermal hotel and you can also enter the sea here. This facility is open all year round.
Alaçati, a charming inland village with windmills, old stone houses, typical of the area, art galleries and boutiques has become a favourite spot for al-fresco dining in the many cafes, bars and restaurants. It's 5 kms from the villa. It's very lively, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when locals drive out from Izmir to enjoy the atmosphere. It has a market on Saturdays where you can buy fresh local produce as well as antiques and local crafts. Alaçati is a famous surfing centre and has several windsurfing schools clustered around Yumru Bay near the Yacht marina.
Ayayorgi ,a beautiful bay not far from Cesme boasts several popular beachclubs, some laid back for chilling out, some more geared to the young crowd. These beachclubs become real hot spots at night and you can dance till dawn beneath the stars and listen to concerts staged regularly through the summer.
Dalyan Koy, a fishing village near Cesme with a peaceful yacht marina is the place to go for it's famous fish and meze restaurants. Try Korfez, our favourite or Emin's Place.
The town of Cesme, 10 kms from Venus Villa has many restaurants where you can enjoy fish and raki or wine and delicious meze dishes as well as pide and hot toasted sandwiches called Kumru. Along the sea front you can join the boats offering tours of the coast and local islands.
The boats stop along the way for swimming in local bays and provide tasty lunches. Cesme's castle dates back to the defeat of the Genoese by the Ottomans in 1566 and there is also a Caravanserai. There are plenty of shops selling carpets, leather and silver and gold jewellery and shops offering Turkish delight and dried fruit and nuts to take home.
Ildir, once the ancient city of Erytrai is about 20 kms from the villa. Today it is a quiet fishing village with some local fish restaurants and if you are fit enough to climb up to the ruins, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the sea and islands.
You could also take a longer day-trip to Chios, a Greek island just offshore. Boats leave every day from Cesme harbour.
