****** UPDATE - WE'VE JUST BEEN AWARDED 4 STARS BY VISIT ENGLAND ******
Situated in the very heart of the oldest, historic part of the east side of Whitby, The Corner House is a Grade 2 listed cottage and is one of the oldest properties in Whitby, with a lease first being signed in 1639!
We fell in love with, bought and completely refurbished our little seaside getaway in 2014 and have added a wealth of quality fixtures and fittings to it to try to make it feel as homely as possible (and yes, we stay here as often as we can!). We love the location, as it's perfect for travellers of all ages, as there's no hills, steep steps or cobbles to negotiate with walking sticks or pushchairs but being in the heart of Whitby, it's still within very easy reach of shopping and eating and drinking establishments, as well as being close to attractions and the beach.
Travelling with young children? We've got you covered with all the essentials! A 'Retract-a-Gate' baby gate, a Mama's & Papa's Travel Cot with additional mattress, a Mama's & Papa's high chair and a toddler's training toilet seat - to save you having to try to cram them all into the car! We don't supply the bedding for the travel cot though but we know that you prefer to bring your own anyway.
In the kitchen and open plan living room you'll find that we've gone to town with everything from York stone flooring and granite worktops to an induction hob, separate drinks cooler (so you don't have to choose between the wine and the milk!), free wi-fi and loads of books, games and DVD's. Nothing has been left out, to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible - including a free bottle of wine!
Upstairs, the shower room has a fabulous, large shower enclosure (big enough for two - if that's what takes your fancy!), with a rainforest shower rose and flexible shower head, along with W.C and vintage wash basin.
Bedroom 1 (The Green Room)
This has the most comfortable king sized metal bed that I've slept in for ages and a gorgeous super king sized, super snuggly, Christy duvet. We've even put a wall mounted television with Freeview and DVD player in there, case you decide to stay in bed all day! This room also has plenty of storage and great, dual aspect windows with fabulous views of the upper harbour.
Bedroom 2 (The Blue Room)
This is another good sized bedroom with two single metal beds with lovely, super cosy, double sized Christy duvets. Again, we've put a wall mounted television with Freeview and DVD player in there, for when you want to keep the kids quiet! This room also has plenty of storage and the same fabulous views of the upper harbour.
Whilst the cottage does not have its own dedicated parking space, there is a very handy, free 40 minute, limited waiting bay just outside, which is ideal for unloading your bags and there's a Council run, long stay car park approximately 50 metres away, which provides you with the option of using a 'cashless' parking system (which lets you pay via a mobile app and even reminds you when your ticket is about to expire!) - very handy! Otherwise, further up the street there is free, on street parking.

The Yorkshire region
Glorious Yorkshire - God's own County! That's been said many times, by very many people - so they can't all be wrong!
Come and visit us here on the Yorkshire Coast, where the moors and rolling hills almost literally meet the sea. With quaint villages surrounding villages greens, cream telephone boxes and thatched cottages.
Golden, sandy, beaches and beautiful blue sea which crashes against cliffs full of fossils from our distant past and horizons which stretch forever.
Come and visit our Whitby, which is nestled along the banks of the natural harbour at the mouth of the River Esk, Yorkshire's only Salmon river, and see how flawless Whitby jet, made famous by Queen Victoria, is turned into arguably some of the most beautiful jewellery in the world.
Then wander around its narrow streets crammed full of independent traders, selling everything from dog treats to dinosaurs!
The Pannett Park museum and its grisly 'Hand of Glory' is another 'must see'; together with a visit (or two!) to the many local hostelries, where a thriving live music scene can be found.
A short stroll from The Corner House is Whitby Railway Station, where the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway will make you feel like you've been transported back in time! Journey through fabulous scenery to visit Goathland, or continue on to Pickering, before returning back to sample some of finest and freshest food Whitby has to offer.
Ice cream, seafood, international cuisine, pie & mash or good, old fashioned, fish and chips can all be found within a short stroll of The Corner House and if you've got room after that, why not treat yourself to coffee and cake in any number of excellent, independently run, cafes.
Up the famous 199 steps you'll find the iconic Abbey and St Mary's church, which was the inspiration behind the most well known of all vampire stories, Dracula.
Whitby's 'not to be missed' festivals and specialist themed events can be found throughout the year - great people watching opportunities!

"Location, Location, Location"
Beautifully situated in central Whitby, the Corner House is a pleasantly furnished cottage whose location cannot be faulted. Clean and well equipped, the owner was helpful and pleasant, and the cottage was surprisingly quiet given its position, especially given it was Goth Weekend and the town had many visitors when we stayed. The pre-arrival info worked smoothly, and the key safe mechanism meant no fuss when arriving or leaving. Fab shower with plenty of space, well-equipped kitchen and sociable living space. Beds were comfy and the whole experience was a pleasant one. To be honest, I couldn't fault it, but then I wasn't looking to. Good value for a pleasant stay in a wonderful place close to all amenities. You'd struggle to find a better location in Whitby.
Hi, Thanks for your fabulous review and I'm chuffed to bits that you enjoyed your stay and how we've done our little cottage. Yes, we love the fact that it's really quiet, even though it's right at the heart of the old, east side of Whitby and we immediately loved the location, so I'm glad you do too! You and your friends are welcome back at any time. Cheers, Nichola

"A Wonderfull Place to Stay"
It is fair to say that I am no stranger to Holiday Lets in North Yorkshire and the Whitby area in particular and to date I havent uncovered a bad one! The Corner House , however, raises the bar to a new level ! Cosy, compact and exceptionally well specified ,this little Jewel of a cottage has been tastefully restored whilst still retaining character and occupies a superb location in the heart of the town with all local ameneties just a flat walk away. The Corner House is ideal for both familes or older visitors - Whitby is fart from flat - but its location is such that acess to the town,to the beaches and all shopping and recreational venues is easy made with no hills to slow the progress.Even parking the car did not present any problems with either on-street parking or off - road council operated parking being readily available - and this was on a Bank Holiday ! And despite the hustle and bustle of a busy seaside town The Corner House is remarkably quiet within, making for a most relaxing expierience. All in all we had a most wonderfull stay at the Corner House and are eagerly anticipating a return visit at the earliest convenience.
Hi, Thank you so much for your wonderful review and I'm chuffed to bits that you enjoyed your stay in our little cottage! Yes, we love the location as it's so handy for everything and with it being on the flat, it's ideal for every member of the family, so I'm really pleased that you thought so too! I'm also really happy that you're planning on returning; you're all welcome back, at any time. Cheers, Nichola

Our second stay here and it was perfect again. Even better if possible thanks to a few minor changes the owner has made. For example a retractable/moveable baby gate, different table, some more pictures and mirror just add to the stunning rental. Extremely clean and well maintained. Again nichola was excellent in her communication.
Hi, I'm really pleased that you stayed with us again and I'm even more pleased that you like the updates we've done since your last visit - this genuinely means a lot! We are trying to add little touches to keep the place looking nice and fresh. Thank you as well for taking the time to write this lovely review, you and your family are welcome back any time. Take care. Nichola

"Perfect location, lovely little cottage"
We stayed at the Corner House in Whitby for a long weekend as a family of three adults. The house is in a the perfect location and is well equipped with everything you need for a self catering stay although it is very close to lots of excellent restaurants/cafes etc. Despite being so close to everything once the door is closed it's very quiet inside, we were never disturbed by noise from outside. There is no car parking at the cottage (as with most places in Whitby) However the car park is literally 200 metres away (Chargeable.. £6.50 per 24hrs) There is free parking around however we chose to just park in the car park. The Corner House has a beautiful kitchen, fabulous shower, lovely stone floors and fireplace and the beds are very comfy... What more could you need? Nichola the owner was very welcoming and the complimentary wine went down very well :) We loved our stay here and will definitely stay again.
Hi, I'm absolutely over the moon that you enjoyed your stay and that you liked what we've done with the cottage. I'm also very happy to hear that you are planning on coming back - you're all very welcome at any time. Take care. Nichola

We've just had a lovely long weekend stooping at The Corner House, for us it was in the perfect location being centrally based, close to restaurants, shopping, pubs and the Beach. Parking was in the car park a short walk (but visible from the house) and I used the Ringo Parking app to pay for this on my iphone, so this was hastle free. Checking in was easy all instructions provided up front. The cottage itself has been done up to a high standard and was very warm and welcoming. We both loved the big shower and the bedrooms were both light and airy and lovely and comfortable. Overall we had a memorable weekend in a lovely town, in a lovely house. Cant fault it.
Hi, I'm absolutely chuffed to bits that you've had such a lovely long weekend in our cottage and thank you very much for your fabulous comments. I look forward to welcoming you back, any time. Cheers, Nichola

"Lovely property, in a good location and child friendly."
Really enjoyed our stay, very cosy little place in a good location, we have a 2 year old so the high chair, stair gate and cot made it easy for us, may be safety locks on the kitchen doors would make … More
Hi, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and I'm glad the items we've put in for the little one were useful! Thanks for suggesting the safety locks; they're definitely something we'll look at, we do have to think of guests who have disabilities though, I don't want to make areas difficult to access. I very much look forward to welcoming you and your family back at any time. Cheers, Nichola x

"An excellent introduction to Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors"
First time to Whitby, and this cottage could not be better located. Much attention has been spent on making the property as welcoming as possible and is suited to either a couple or 4 people.
Hi, Thank you for your lovely review! I'm very happy that you enjoyed your first visit to Whitby and hope that it won't be the last! I'm also really pleased that you found the cottage welcoming for you and your family. I look forward to welcoming you back at any time. Cheers, Nichola

"Perfect! Definitely choose here!"
Me, my mum and my girls aged 7, 5 and 1 had a lovely stay here. The cottage is lovely and decorated to a high standard. The position couldn't be better. Right in the middle of everything (but without this being a problem in any way). There is 40 min parking outside to unload. The Long stay car park is only 100 metres from the house and after a bit of patience we got parked ok. Being an old town this is just something you have to put up with! :) Was particularly pleased to see a proper additional mattress to use in the travel cot. The kids were extremely happy with their bedroom and wall mounted TV with DVD slot, especially when they found the Lego movie DVD downstairs! The kitchen is lovely with all good quality electricals. The owner was very helpful with everything and we could not fault the cottage at all. The only things I will mention is possibly look at some sort of baby gate for bottom of stairs as there is a stone floor and we were always having to be on our guard that she might try to go upstairs and fall back down (which she turned in to a game!) not a problem of course if you don't have toddlers! The other thing is that the downstairs windows do not open- and only some upstairs ( which the owner is aware of and trying to sort) so quite a lot of condensation built up on the windows after showers and in the morning. However this was not a problem for us or anyone else staying but may be for the owner if not seen to soon.
Hi, Thanks for your excellent review, I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay and I look forward to welcoming you back. Yes, I can appreciate the need for a baby gate, I'll have a look at getting one fitted on. The windows are definitely also on my 'to do' list - they're driving me crazy! I don't like the idea of not being able to open them (quite a few upstairs can be opened though) - this is a job for the spring! I'm also glad your girls enjoyed the DVD player in the bedroom, I thought that would go down well! Thanks again for your review and take care. Cheers, Nichola

"Lovely house in a lovely place and in a lovely position."
The house was well equipped, and in a great position on the "older" side of the harbour. We arrived late on a Thursday evening so didn't really struggle with parking in the nearest long stay car park about 20 mtrs away. However, it was really busy in the town being school holidays and close to goth weekend so we left the car in same space until we left for home as it was so busy, just paying the car park fee of £6.50 for 24 hrs. I understand the parking is being addressed as it is always a bonus to have a parking space, especially in a place such as Whitby. Despite this we took the opportunity to take our young girls on a 20 minute bus ride as a special treat, to Robin hoods bay for a few hours and was really nice. The house is located in a very central position for all there is in Whitby to see, do and eat. All restaurants and takeaways we tried on the door step were nice too. Nice pie and mash shop next door and a nice Italian next door to that. The famous magpie restaurant is only about a 10 minute stroll. Loads of positives for this place, only 2 negatives. Firstly this is a positive and a negative really as it was my own fault in not reading that the property has a shower and no bath but oh my what a great shower it was. Really nice rainfall style shower head and nice warm water, not fiddley to control temp as some are. It's a bit impractical for fussy young kids like mine that only like baths. And the other negative would be the stone floor downstairs is a bit cold on the feet at this time of year and wish i had thought to take our slippers...lovely to look at though. Overall a lovely relaxing short break from seasoned visitors to Whitby. We have stayed in a few nice hotels and a couple of nice self catering and would highly recommend this house.
Hi, Thank you for your great review, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and I look forward to welcoming you back. Yes, we struggled with whether or not to replace the bath when we refurbished the cottage but thought that older or more infirm guests would struggle to climb into it, so decided to just have a shower but to make it as nice as we could! Unfortunately as well, the parking is also always going to be an issue for this area but I've been checking out the permit zones, which the cottage is eligible for but they all seem to be quite a walk away, I'll be investigating this option further though, in case I've misinterpreted the map! The public transport to get to places is good though, especially the steam trains! Thanks again for your review and take care. Cheers, Nichola
