The Languedoc-Roussillon region

This region is steeped in medieval History and the Cathars. Mountains, gorges, rivers, canals and plenty of wildlife. Chic shopping in Toulouse and Montpellier or bird watching a few hundred metres away in the dried up salt lake known as the Etang. Mild winter climate averaging around 12C in Dec / Jan and a hot and sunny 30C in July / August.

This is still a very authentic, rustic and unpretentious part of southern France with friendly, hospitable locals.

Carcassonne. The medieval walled city dates back to the 6th Century. It has 52 towers and 2 miles of ramparts and is still inhabited to this day. Narrow streets offer a vast selection of shops and eateries. The city has been the setting for several films including Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. The place comes alive in Summer especially in July when they have the Music Festival and you can find different types of music / acts dotted around the city and performing in the outdoor theatre.

Marseillette is approx 15 Kms from Carcassonne offering a typical village alongside the canal with a Boulangerie, Bar/Tabac, Post Office, Restaurant/Hotel, Hairdresser. Walk alongside the canal or sit on the benches in the shade and watch the boats go by. Ideal location to base yourself to visit the many local attractions in the region. The gite has lots of local information brochures. Walk through the vineyards or wander down into the etang (dried up salt lake) and see the apples, melons, vines and rice growing.

"Could not fault the property, welcome or region."

Just returned from a 2 week stay at Olive Tree Cottage. This is part of a converted vignerons house which sits right alongside the Canal du Midi from where there are hilarious views of inexperienced boaters attempting to negotiate the locks. The area is rich in history, particularly that of the Cathars, and dominated by vineyards which produce tasty, good quality wine at a reasonable price. The local towns and villages tend to be unspoiled 'working' settlements; part of the 'vrai France'. The wildlife enthusiast will have a field-day - bee-eaters, hoopoe and redstarts were particularly prominent during our stay.
After exploring the local area it was always a pleasure to return to the well-equipped and comfortable gite and take advantage of the immaculately maintained swimming pool. The owners, Pauline and Ken, are friendly, helpful and unobtrusive, and do everything to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

"A relaxing holiday staying in a wonderful gite"

We have just returned from a superb holiday staying at Olive Tree Cottage.
The accommodation was fantastic and definitely exceeded our expectations. The location couldn't be better with the gite being situated next to the lock on the beautiful Canal du Midi. It was great being able to step out from the gite and walk along the canal tow-path. The medieval city of Carcassonne is within a short drive and we spent several afternoons wandering around the narrow cobbled streets looking in the delightful shops, stopping for coffee and cakes.
The gite itself is well equipped and in immaculate condition. The swimming pool, table tennis and BBQ all made our stay all the more enjoyable.
Pauline & Ken were excellent hosts - attentive but not intrusive; the perfect hosts. They provided excellent advice on local attractions and activities - along with a map when we lost ours!
I would happily recommend this property to all my family and friends and we would certainly stay here again

We're delighted you all enjoyed yourselves and next time Alex will be a bit older and able to chase the dogs around!!
See you next year and we can continue the table tennis challenge !!
