The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
Only a short drive away from the vibrant lifestyle of the Costa del Sol coast brings you to the peace and spectacular scenery of a more traditional Spain and its more leisurely way of life, where dazzling white-washed villages cling to the hillsides and summits and the sights and scenery will enchant you throughout the year.
At the eastern end of The Costa del Sol, between Malaga and Nerja and up in the hills behind lies the Axarquia region with its sub-tropical temperatures with a reputation for the best climate in Europe. Steeped in history having been ruled by both the Romans and the Moors, it has much to offer for exploration and sense-of-place from the plethora of traditional villages to the magical formations within the Nerja caves. Malaga itself has a beautiful historical centre, with very good shopping, while Antequera and Granada are within exploring range.
Canillas de Aceituno area
Although only 20 minutes beautiful driving from the coast into the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda National Park, Canillas de Aceituno is a world apart from the coastal 'buzz'. It retains all the sights, sounds, scents and spirit of traditional Andalucian life - potted flowers decorate the narrow side-streets, mules and goats pass by studiously ignoring humanity, the fish-delivery man calls out his wares, the village ladies practice their graceful flamenco in the evening cool. From here you can walk, paint, photograph, bird-watch, picnic, listen to the cicadas, drink the local wine, sample the village speciality - the famous fennel-scented 'morcilla' sausage, in whose honour there is a village fiesta in April. Or simply enjoy the tranquility and comfort of Casa Convento. Choose your preferred venue - full-on rooftop sun, lunch-with-a view in the shade of the third-floor terrace, or salute the sunset with a cold glass of 'fino' while the shrilling young house martins put on a spectacular flying display for you.
The main 4-day village festival is in August when the whole population turns out in style; - in fact, there are many other village fiestas during the summer months, and local town/village markets every day of the week year round. Velez-Malaga is well worth exploring, especially its older, higher streets, and nearer the coast there is a Water Park, Go-karting, 2 golf courses, masses of chiringuitos (beach bars often with sun loungers) and a large shopping centre/supermarket, El Ingenio. However, do please try out your Spanish in the village's fascinating little shops and on the streets, where everyone greets each other, friend or stranger.

Guestbook for Casa Convento
"Seems like we have discovered a piece of heaven in the Andalucian mountains. …. This place is perfect for a tranquil holiday as well as a base to see most of southern Spain. " Trond and Shelley 18-25th June 2009
4-11th April 2009: ' What a wonderful internet find! We must have looked at 50 properties on-line and chose this one because it looked so delightful. Sometimes internet finds are disappointing, but this was even better than we anticipated.... A beautiful house (with a great kitchen!) in a lovely village. ' Susan and John Whittick, Canada.
A wonderful stay at the stunningly situated and beautifully stylish Casa Convento; the perfect holiday from our busy London lives. We could not have wished for a more comfortable and relaxing home-from-home. Emma and Olly 28.08.09 – 04.09.09
The house is a credit to you. It is the best decorated and equipped house we have stayed in in Spain. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling in this region. Ian, Bernie 1-15th August
'Thank you for letting us stay at Casa Convento - we thought it was lovely. What a tribute to your skills as a designer! It was a joy to feel the space you have created, yet to be in a village house among the others in the street. Such a lovely village too: The people are delightful.' J.& P. Blake
