The Normandy / Manche region

Historically, Normandy is perhaps best know for the 1944 Normandy Landings, which happened on the beaches on the north east coast of the Manche, about an hour from Maison Mielles. Its most renowned landmark is Mont Saint Michel, an small enclosed island town with a vast Cathedral on its summit.
Normandy is equally famous for its apple products, such as cider, pommea and calvados, and for its pork products such as andouille of Vire. La Manche is also the main dairy region of France, famous for its cheeses such as Camebert, Coutances and Pont L'Eveque.
In 2012, Normandy will once again be in the news as the site of the World Equestrian Games.
The Brehal / St Martin de Brehal area
St Martin de Brehal is on a 12km sand beach that stretches north from the town of Granville, birthplace of Dior. Granville is said to have a micro-climate, due to the Gulf Stream which runs through the bay of Mont Saint Michel.

Guestbook for Maison Mielles
We went for a week and stayed for two!
We went for a week and stayed for two! This house is in the perfect spot, with the beach a 5min walk and the village shops, bars & restaurants are 10mins. If you want to drive to either, it's easy to park. We went in August and there was lots going on in the village - fish markets, beach activities, horse racing, farmers' fair etc, but it didn't feel busy on the beach. We went on plenty of excursions to local castles, to Granville, to the fantastic zoo, to a chocolate factory, and plenty of days on the beach. You can even wheel the pushchairs down the ramps onto the sand.
The house was not fully renovated when we stayed, but still had everything you need for a comfortable beach holiday. Added bonus was a hot outside shower and plenty of room to get rid of all the sand in the large garage/hall area. Kitchen was really well equiped. Beds very comfortable and proper cots for the babies. The added bonus of black-out blinds in the bedrooms was great for kids not waking up too early & for siestas. We used the enormous outside table for most of our meals & there is a great barbq.
We had a couple of rainy spells (it's not the south of France!), but they didn't tend to last for long and certainly didn't spoil the holiday as there is plenty to do in wet whether.
At low tide, all the locals go mussel & crustacean picking on the rock pools - great to watch & participate in. Just be careful to watch out as the tide comes in REALLY quickly. The swimming at high tide is great.
We will definitely go back again

Can't wait to go back (5 stars).
This is a really special place to stay. We had a wonderful family holiday there summer 2010 and we all really enjoyed ourselves. The house itself is spacious with a lovely garden for the days that you don't want to go to the beach. St Martin de Brehal has all that you'd want for a fantastic beach holiday, long beaches, that aren't overcrowded, rock pools etc for the younger kids, sailing clubs for the older ones and I particularly enjoyed moules frites + vin blanc at Le Retro.
The surrounding area allows for exploring, lots of castles and Norman type stuff on the doorstep for the history lovers or for more recent history, you've got the WWII beaches to hand. We also went for a trip inland to the Gorges, which were very impressive.
