Bagnères-de-Bigorre is a charming old spa town in the Pyrénées. Long visited by the French, it sees few foreign visitors. Perhaps this is why the locals are so friendly!
Our apartment is in the heart of the old town yet is in a beautiful and peaceful location which includes a shared but private courtyard garden. It is on the first and second floors of an old converted hotel and is accessible via a spiral staircase.
On the first floor there is an open plan living room including a well-equipped kitchen. The living room opens onto a balcony which overlooks the courtyard. There is a separate utility room containing a washing machine and dryer. Stairs lead up from the living room to the three bedrooms (one double, two twins), the bathroom and the shower room (each of these has a WC). A fold up bed can be put up either in the larger of the twin rooms. So we can sleep up to 7 adults (or 8 if 2 or more are children).
If you bringing small kids there is a travel cot and high chair available in the apartment. Please let us know if you will be wanting to use these so that we can make them available.
The TV gives several English programmes as well as the French ones.
Bagnères-de-Bigorre, close to the Pyrenees, has a fabulous thermal spa bath, a casino, a swimming pool, cinema, museum, a market and mini-golf. It's a lovely location, a river flows through the town and there are amazing views of the surrounding countryside and mountains. Several restaurants offer a variety of cuisines including the local specialities.
The town is also ideally situated for all sorts of sporting activities, including cycling, hiking, fishing, climbing, golf, canoeing and skiing in the winter - the nearest ski resort, La Mongie, the largest in the Pyrenees, is less than 30 minutes drive away!
From Bagnères-de-Bigorre you can easily get to many other attractions such as the sanctuary at Lourdes, the Pic du Midi observatory and the Cirque du Gavarnie (a UNESCO world heritage site). Pau is a lovely town to visit and the Atlantic coast and Spain are accessible for day trips.
The nearest airports are Pau (I hour drive away), Tarbes (30 minutes) and Toulouse (1 hour 40 minutes).

The apartment is one of several in a three story building that was once a hotel. The property was recently renovated to a high standard. It is over 80m2 and is centrally heated.

Outside is a charming, shared, enclosed courtyard with a pedestrian gate and the property has access to a secure ground floor storage area suitable for bikes, skis and so on. There is free parking available nearby in the town centre.
Our rates are inclusive and cover gas, electricity, internet and phone calls to landlines to most countries. All linen, including towels, is provided and the kitchen is well equipped. The television gives you several English speaking channels, as well as French ones and we also supply you with at least a day's worth of coffee, tea, sugar, milk and toilet paper as well as the basics of cooking oil, salt and pepper. And a welcome bottle of wine!
We ask for a returnable bond of 220 Euros, or £200. Or for those from farther afield, 400 NZ dollars. Unless there are breakages or extra cleaning needed we aim to return this within a week of you leaving the apartment.
A deposit of 30% of the total rental price is required on booking. The balance and the bond should be paid 8 weeks or less before your arrival date. Please see our website for ways you can pay
The Midi-Pyrenees region
Warm in summer and cold enough for skiing in winter, this is one of the most beautiful parts of France. Here are some of the activities that can be found in the region:
Skiing - La Mongie (Tourmalet), the largest downhill ski resort in the French Pyrénées is less than 30 minutes drive away from Bagnères-de-Bigorre. You will find fantastic skiing here, suitable for all levels. There are 69 pistes (one is floodlit) totalling 100 km of runs.
There are also snow cannons to ensure good snow and a snow park for 'boarders'. And if you’ve been an Alpine skier you will find the prices very attractive. During the ski season there is a bus service between Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the ski resort.
Other downhill ski resorts such as Cauterets, St Lary, Luz-St-Saveur and Peyragudes, are also not too far away.
Cross Country Skiing - can be found in the area as well. The closest resort is Payolle, where snow-shoe walking is also available. There are many other resorts, such as Val d'Azun (about 50 minutes drive away); these are also places worth visiting at any time of the year.
Cycling and Mountain Biking - The Tour de France often passes through the town and two of its most famous climbs are nearby: the Col de Tourmalet and the Col d'Aspen. Bring your bike or rent one and you, too, can try these out. There’s more gentle cycling for the less fanatical and mountain biking as well. Planetair65 in the town rents – and repairs – bikes. You can also hire fishing equipment, among other things, from them.
Golf - Not far from the town centre of Bagnères-de-Bigorre is an 18 hole golf course with panoramic mountain views. There is also mini-golf located in the town itself.
So much more…. Other sporting activities available in the area include paraponting, fishing, horse riding, rock climbing, tennis, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, walking and hiking.
Bagnères-de-Bigorre is a spa town and a visit to the thermal spa with roof top jacuzzis and sun deck is highly recommended.
Shopping - As well as supermarkets, there are all sorts of speciality shops in town. Or you can go further afield. Pau (60 kilometres away) and Tarbes (17 kilometres away) are both excellent places to visit and to shop. And if you’re in Bagnères-de-Bigorre on a Saturday you must meander down to the marvellous market.
Eating and Drinking - Well what can we say? This is France and Bagnères-de-Bigorre abounds with restaurants, great cafés and bars. There’s an excellent pizzeria with a very friendly owner just across the road from the apartment.

"Great location, spotlessly clean and fabulously well equipped."
We selected the accommodation because it looked very well situated in a town close to good shops and facilities.
The apartment is on two floors -it was spotlessly clean and very well appointed. There are 2 bathrooms, and 3 spacious bedrooms. All the beds were very comfortable. There is central heating (a luxury for us), ample hot water and English TV, books and games, washing machine and tumble dryer.
We had an afternoon at the local spa which I would highly recommend..
There is a spiral staircase giving access to the property - this may not be suitable for the elderly or infirm.

"Perfect holiday rental in beautiful area"
Le Bach is a well appointed, very comfortable apartment with everything you need for a perfect self-catering break. The quality of the furniture, furnishings and kitchen/electrical equipment is high and the house is cleaned and maintained to a very high standard. It has a small balcony with table and chairs and is located in a private courtyard - and so is a haven of peace and quiet. Its location in Bagneres isperfect - right beside the main square with a whole variety of shops - a small supermarket, boulangerie-patisserie only two steps away. Larger supermarkets are located just on the outskirts. The town itself is an excellent place from which to explore the area of the Hautes Pyrenees but even if you don't want to drive too far, there are many walks you can do from the town. We recommend the Vallon du Salut and the Allees Dramatiques. The local museum and art gallery is a real treasure and anyone interested in watercolours, should not miss the very important collection of paintings by Blanche Odin. We flew to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees and from there it is only a 30 minute drive to Bagneres. Jane made the whole booking process so easy. Very highly recommended!!

"Great location in the heart of town-Cycling Central"
We had a week in Bagorre in this appartment . Fantastic location with everything at our doorstep .Very comfortable accommodation with a sense of almost being a local .The english speaking owner and managers made us feel at home right away . The only problem we did have was getting our bicycles up the spiral stairway ,although there is storage for them downstairs, otherwise we really enjoyed ourselves there .

"Central location offering views, tranquility and great facilities"
With a family of 3 children, 2 adults, we found this a superb base. The apartment was immaculate and very well equipped - all new and clean. You have the beauty of being in the heart of the town (which we thought was enchanting) yet unusually peaceful and tranquil. From the apartment you could see the mountains, have coffee on the balcony - quite lovely. We live in France ourselves and have been to many areas but fell in love with the Pyrénées. As well as cycling up the mountains we relaxed at the cafes and bars and the town offers one of the best markets I've been to in France. Warm welcome to gite. Sum it up by saying we'll be booking to go back. A real find.

"Comfortable accommodation with all the facilities in an excellent location for active people"
We really enjoyed our holiday in the flat . It was in a quiet location but central to the town of Bagneres de Bigorre. We collected our croissants and pain au chocolat for breakfast from one of the nearby bakeries. There were several restaurants in the town, and we also cooked for ourselves sometimes in the well equipped kitchen. There was plenty to do, we spent some time walking and the scenery was magnificent. We also went skiing and racquetting in the snow. We had a day trip to Toulouse. The thermal baths were amazing too.

"Lovely appartment in the centre of town"
We were a party of 7 staying in the appartment for a skiing holiday. The appartment is located in the centre of town with parking nearby. The ski slopes at La Mongie are a 30 minute drive away with several other resorts within a one hours drive. The apartment is warm, well furnished and slept the 7 of us comfortably. There is english freeview TV which is a bonus when entertaining 5 teenagers. The appartment was supplied with basics like tea, coffee, milk and even a welcoming bottle of wine to make our stay even more comfortable. If you want a party town then don't go to Bagneres, there are some bars and good restaurants but not much nightlife.

"Pleasant, well-equipped apartment in the centre of a pretty Pyrenean Spa Town"
Apartment owned by New Zealander who also manages the bookings (very efficiently). Apartment cleaned and taken care of by a local English couple, also very efficiently. Lovely pleasant apartment, which I would guess has been fairly recently renovated and decorated at the time of writing (Feb 2012). Apartment sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. We visited as a family of four in February for skiing. Very well-equipped kitchen, without being over-cluttered with non-essential items. The welcome pack of consumable provisions (washing up liquid, bin liners, coffee etc) was there, if rather minimalistic. Three good-sized bedrooms (much larger than your average chalet bedroom in the Alps). The beds are adequate (the double bed is a 5ft I would guess) but not luxurious. Having two bathrooms (and therefore two toilets) was very useful for our family of four. And it was lovely to be able to have a proper BATH, (rather than a shower) with lashings of hot water to ease aching muscles after a day's skiing. In the living room, there is comfortable (Ikea) seating and the whole apartment was wonderfully warm and comforting once the boiler had been ramped up. A safe courtyard for children to play in, although since we were there in February in -8 degrees centrigrade, our children stayed inside! A faux fire adds focus, although not much heat. Plenty of extra bedding available for coldies and a great drying room for skiers. There is no provision for really small children (high chairs, cots, baby cutlery, stair gates etc) but it was fine for our kids, aged 6 and 8. I would say that 20-30 mins to La Mongie ski resort is a bit optimistic. It took us 30 minutes on clear roads. Our first drive to the slopes, after snow, when the road was slippery and when we had to fit snow chains for the first time, the journey took nearly 50 minutes. Bagneres de Bigorre might not the best place to stay for the frenetic skier who wants to ski 8.30 am to 5 pm. For these people, a ski-in, ski-out hotel in La Mongie might be better. However for the more laid-back holiday-maker, B de B provides plenty of atmosphere and would be especially suitable for a summer holiday, when the opportunity to stroll around the town of an evening would be most pleasant. The children loved the nearby thermal baths, Aquensis, which provided good value luxury. Would recommend.
Thanks for that great review! One issue: there IS a baby cot and high chair but they are only brought out if requested so that they don't clutter the place up.

The apartment is extremely well located in the centre of the town with all amenities within walking distance. We were met by the property managers who went through everything with us. It was clean warm and had been furnished to a good standard. We had a very enjoyable stay.

"Great apartment in a delightful town."
Everything was as advertised. The caretakers who greeted us were very helpful. This is a very comfortable apartment on two levels with one of the better equiped kitchens I've rented over the years. The bedrooms and baths were on the second floor - spacious and offering good privacy. The downstairs living room/kitchen area was very comfortable and we were able to eat dinner in one night and ordered very good pizza from the restaurant from across the way the other night. There is a wonderful supermarket about ten minutes out of town as well as the Monoprix in town. Good coffee and pastry available in town.

"Excellent base for Pyrenees cycling"
The property was in a very good location and in excellent condition. Washing machine and Dryer were a real plus as we were cycling in the mountains every day. We ate in every night and found that the kitchen was well equipped.
This property would suit a family well, although there were only two of us when we visited - we only used one of the bedrooms. There was linen on all of the beds and ample clean towels.
Excellently located for cycling the Tourmalet, Aspin and Col d'Aubisque.
Would definitely recommend.
