Location description from owner

The Central Portugal region

Silver coast (Costa de Prata) has stunningly beautiful stretches of beach with not only the 3km of sandy beach at São Martinho do Porto but the beautiful beaches of Nazaré and Foz do Arelho nearby. The area is perfect to sight see Portugal’s heritage in the many picturesque towns steeped in history, a few listed below.

Towards the south:

The medieval borough Óbidos (20 km), is a medieval walled town which enjoys a magnificent present-day state of repair as a result of its status as the traditional gift from Portuguese kings to their wives. Within the walls are fascinating alleys which have become home to high-class handicraft and gift shops as well as bars and restaurants of repute.

The fisherman city Peniche (50 km) and the Berlengas Islands.Peniche is Portugal’s largest fishing port and the industry dominates the town. It is great to take a walk along the sea wall before making a visit to one of the many harbour-side restaurants for fresh fish cooked on a barbecue at the roadside.

The Gothic city Santarém and the museum house of Alpiarça, the palace, the church and the convent of Mafra.

The 2 palaces of Sintra, the capital city Lisbon (100 km).Sintra is surrounded by greenery and is rich in different species of vegetation.Nowadays it is a favourite spot for visitors who like to discover it on foot or in one of the horse-drawn carriages for hire in the main square of the town. The 15th century palace in the village is well worth seeing for the painted ceilings and the Moorish patio. The simplicity of the Capuchos convent in the Sintra hills is well worth the drive out.

Towards the north:

The church and the convent of Alcobaça (20km) from the 12th century, the basilica and the convent of Batalha from the 14th century.

The place of pilgrimage Fátima (50 km), the castles of Leiria and Porto do Mos.Fatima welcomes millions of devotees a year who come to pray at the site of a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary here in 1917

The university city Coïmbra (100 km), the convent of the tempeliers in Tomar, etc..Coimbra stands on the banks of the River Mondego. It is the traditional cultural centre of the country with one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe

Óbidos - 15 mins drive.
Foz do Arelho beach (surfing and sailing) - 15 mins drive.
Caldas Da Rainha (shopping/spa) - 15 mins drive.
Praia D'El Rey - (famous golf course) - 25 mins drive. Rated as the 13th best course in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine.
Alcabaca Cathedral City - 20 mins drive.

Sao Martinho do Porto

São Martinho do Porto is located 100km north of Lisbon, 3km form Highway 8 and 13km South of Nazaré. The village belongs to the municipality of Alcobaça and has 5000 habitants. There’s a primary school and a college.

The beach front has just been the subject of major investment making it pedestrian safe and wooden walkways allow access to the nearby protected sand-dunes, and enable an uninterupted walk from one side of the bay to the other. The seafront is lined with cafes, restaurants, ice-cream parlours and shops. Cabins can be hired to protect from the midday sun.

There is a daily market (except Mondays). Located half way between the villa and the beach front.

In summer there is usually a wind that comes form the sea and refreshes the weather avoiding temperatures above 30º. At night the temperatures drops significantly allowing everyone to sleep well.

“Nice spacious villa in a very convenient location”

Reviewed 27 Jun 2015

This is a nice spacious villa with good facilities for a relaxing family holiday. Nice garden area with child's play area, table tennis and darts. Great BBQ for al fresco dining in the evening. Location of the villa is great for exploring the surrounding area. Sao Martinho do Porto has a great and very safe beach for the children, with some nice and inexpensive restaurants. The local cod dishes are great.

“Modern, spacious well appointed villa which manages to be warm and welcoming. Well located in this charming traditional Portugue”

We returned to the villa for our 5th visit and left as satisfied as the first time we visited. We continued to enjoy swimming in the pool and the fabulous bay but also still found new restaurants to eat in and new places to visit. There are so many interesting historical sites in the vicinity that you can never be bored. The villa still has everything you could wish for to be comfortable and to occupy a young family. We will definitely be back for a 6th visit!

“Great relaxing holiday”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2012

We were a large group with a range of ages from 19 to 77 but everyone had a lovely relaxing break. The villa was very well equiped and spotlessly clean and had everything you would need and more. The local town had everyrhing you needed including a local daily market where we found very cheap and good produce worth the visit. The beech was within walking distance and very clean and safe. We ate out most days finding some great resturants our favorites being the local Tapas Bar and Portabello's an Italian where the Manager even gave my parents a lift home when we could not get a taxi. I would certainly recomend this villa and holiday location to anyone as there is something for everyone.

“A Welcome Break”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2012

This villa was an absolute delight to stay in. It has everything you could wish for and more especially when travelling with a large family. I really liked the location and could walk to everything I needed, the beach, local shops etc. I decided not to hire a car on this trip and was happy to use the buses for several outings. The beaches were amazing, and it really was an area of outstanding natural beauty. The dunes are a must to visit and the café next to them serves great local wine at 50c a glass!

“Expectations exceeded”

Reviewed 2 Jul 2012

Ten of us including 4 small children celebrated our 35 wedding anniversary over two weeks in early June. Firstly the owners could not have more helpful in terms of supplying cots etc.Our first impressions of the villa itself were Wow! Once inside again the accommodation was equally impressive and each family unit was delighted with the spacious rooms and en suite facilities. An added bonus were the other amenities eg table tennis table in double garage as well as beach/pool equipment. The villa is within walking distance of a supermarket and the fabulous beach. There is a range of excellent local restaurants and generally the area is great value for money, much cheaper than the Algarve.Within a short drive there's the picturesque village of Nazare with its spectacular views..I unhesitatingly recommend both the villa, where we wanted for nothing and this hidden gem of an area.

“Not just a villa - more like home from home”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2012

An immaculate villa with lots of added extras that made this holiday more like home from home. We had everything that we could have asked for......and more. The villa is beautifully presented and was very clean upon arrival. We even had the added touch of fresh flowers and a nice bottle of wine to greet us on top all of the essentials. It is situated in a great spot - just far enough away but easy to walk to all the facilities that San Martinho has to offer including the beach front and lots of restaurants, as well as the Supermarket, a fresh food open air market specialising in fish and vegetables and a variety of other shops. The promenade along the seafront is excellent for a daily walk or alternatively you could walk the length of the horseshoe shaped sandy beach. There are cafes and bars to stop for en route for much needed refreshments! Overall I would thoroughly recommend this villa for a holiday!

“Hidden Gem”

Reviewed 22 Mar 2012

We stayed at this villa "out of season" in the October school holidays. This was our second visit having stayed in April of 2010 when we had booked for one week but due to the ash cloud stayed for two! The owners could not have been more accomodating on that occasion so we decided to go back again. The villa is very large indeed - easily room for two (and at a push probaly three) families with options of double beds and twin beds. It was absolutely immaculate and most things felt very new indeed. The property itself has a large pool but is also very child friendly as it has high walls with a lockable gate preventing unwanted access or children's exit! It is about 5 minutes walk from a large supermarket and approximately 10 to 15 minutes walk from the local beach. The beach was lovely when we were there, sandy and not busy, although I couldn't tell how it would be at peak time. I also got the chance to play two cracking golf courses which were about 40 minutes drive - Praia del Rey and Golden Eagle (although I found out later you save a fortune if you book on line rather than contacting the course!). This really is a lovely villa in a quiet part of Portugal and near to a nice village - great for the family.

“Luxurious well equipped villa in a dream location”

Reviewed 21 Mar 2012

Very spacious luxurious villa with a glorious generously sized pool which left nothing to be desired. it was spotless and in excellent decorative order, with all the mod cons you could want inluding a coffee perculator- an essential for me . Sao Martinho was a genuine taste of Portugal, which allowed us to have the traditional family holiday we had always searched for, with value for money that at times was unbelievable. With a modern supermarket only a stroll away and the beach and restuarants just far enough for you to finish an ice-cream on your meander home, the convenience of the location couldn't be beaten. A great central base for some wonderful days out, our trip to Fatima will remain with us for many years to come, the most striking historical sight we have visited in some time. Our teenagers very much enjoyed the trinket shopping at Obidos, one of the most beautiful towns in Portugal,as well as there crash course in surfing at Foz the local surfing mecca- seriously recommend a thatched beach hut right on the golden sands serving pastries, expresso and very cold beer!
