The Ledgelets Cottage Colony is located just past the worlds smallest drawbridge, Somerset Bridge. No longer a working drawbridge today, it does connect you to our little piece of "The Rock". The property is situated in just below Fort Scaur on 4.5 acres, featuring lovely gardens and lawns, with hosts of Bermuda and American Roses scattered through out.
The Ledgelets has been with the Young family since the early 1900's...part of the main house is over 350 years old and still has the original cedar beams! The Ledgelets was one of the first cottage colonies in Bermuda, opening in 1948. After 50 years as a guest house, the property was converted into residential rentals. And only until recently have we decided to bring back some of that old school Bermuda charm by turning a few of the cottages back into vacation rentals and bringing the property back to its former glory.
Somerset is in the western part of Bermuda, near the Royal Naval Dockyard. We are about an hour from St. Georges and 30 minutes from our capital, Hamilton. Our little town of Somerset is just a few minutes away and can be walked to along the Railway Trail and further west is Dockyard which is approximately 15 minutes away. We are five minutes from the Port Royal Golf Course, home of the PGA Grand Slam. And of course don't forget our beaches! Most of Bermuda's beautiful beaches are located on the South Shore, which are about 10-15 minutes away.
The best way to really see the island is from the water. Anywhere near it and in it. Somerset Bridge ("our hood") is the best place on the island for water sports. We are a 10 minute walk to a PADI dive shop, which includes kayak, boat and jet ski rentals. Stand up paddle boarding with amazing views is also nearby - go in the early evening to catch a glimpse of a sea turtle or two!
The Ledgelets is comprised of 5 residential cottages , a full maintenance facility, on site property caretaker, and the main house where we live. The Pool House is extremely private and secluded from the rest of the property and surrounded by lush subtropical gardens.
Across the street from the entrance to The Ledgelets is our private dock. Our cousins use the dock with two fishing boats docked there. Captain Alan Card of the Challenger is one of Bermuda best-known captains and is available for charters. If you are into deep sea fishing, these are the guys to go with. Captain Andrew Card (Alan's brother) has been commercial fishing all of his life and can be found on the dock selling fish most afternoons. If you're in the mood for fish tales and some fresh local catch, Andrew would be happy to provide some for a small donation (the fish tales are free!).
The Pool House is the ideal setting for a relaxing retreat. This private cottage has a patio that is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee, or your evening cocktails, while the lush and well-cultivated subtropical gardens surround you. We encourage you to soak in the reality that you may have just found your own personal paradise.
The Pool House features a master bedroom with king bed, equipped with 600 thread count linens, a spacious master bath with double vanity sinks, tub and shower. Expect all the comforts of home to afford you the opportunity to actually unpack and unwind in a civilised manner.
Your living room and dining room is combined to create one comfortable space, and also offers an inviting view to the pool and gardens. The living room also features a comfortable full size pull out sofa.
From the living/dining room you move into your petite galley kitchen. New appliances have been installed. We have also tried to provide as many of the essential needs one would require in the kitchen. If you require an item that is not found in the cottage, we will be happy to get it for you!
We have a provided a washer and dryer (with detergent and fabric softener) which is located just off the kitchen. You will also find a full BBQ grill available with utensils.
While we expect you to explore our beautiful island, it is nice to sometimes kick back and watch a little telly, mellow out to your favorite tunes or just catch up on social media...all possible with cable TV, blue tooth speakers and wireless internet. The wireless signal will reach all areas of the cottage and around the pool.
We have tried to think of all the necessary items that you will need while visiting. We have beach and pool towels available along with comfy robes and bath towels. You will also find a fresh supply of shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, soap, lotion and sun tan lotion...please use it, the strength of the sun can sneak up on you.
Lastly, the pool area is shared with John and Alison and their young daughter, Hinson. We hope you love relaxing around
