The Istria region
Rovinj Region - Fall in love all over again...
On the beautiful west coast of Istria, just underneath the Lim canal is the most romantic place in the Mediterranean! The town of Rovinj is the right destination for all of you who long for a sentimental atmosphere of the times long lost. Due to the lack of space, houses are closely built, streets are narrow and squares are small, still untouched by modern urbanism.
A walk through these lovely little streets will take you to a distant past, so be sure to bring your camera. From the seaside, Rovinj is protected by the high rocky coast and walls of the houses built on the cliffs, and from the landside it is sheltered by solid bulwarks. All of it still preserved!
WHAT TO SEE?
The town itself was declared a cultural monument in 1963. Somewhat limited space in Rovinj led to the construction of narrow buildings, streets and small town squares. The characteristically designed chimneys in the town's center are also something you may find peculiar in the most interesting way. The baptismal font of the Holy Spirit, constructed in a heptagonal shape, is the oldest relic situated in Lokva Square. The thirteenth century Romanesque church which houses the font is also of interest, due to its detailed carvings of the transenna depicting scenes of Golgotha. The Franciscan Monastery and church in De Amicis Street were built at the beginning of the eighteenth century in the Baroque style, and contain an extensive library and fascinating museum of sacral artifacts.
The Rovinj islands and mainland: These natural sights have been justly described as "outstanding scenic wonders”, because of the pristine beauty of the indented coastline and its forests, which consist of pedunculate oak and Alpine pine trees. This area "of outstanding natural beauty" extends from St. Ivan promontory to Barbariga, and encompasses all the Rovinj islands and the mainland 500 meters from the shore line. The castle on the island of St. Andrija was originally a Benedictine Monastery established in the sixth century AD. In the fifteenth century, the Franciscan order added extensions and it was again refurbished at the end of the nineteenth century by Baron Hutterodt. The castle has now been converted into a hotel. Dvigrad is a medieval town which was abandoned in the seventeenth century, and only its ruins remain, of which the most impressive are those of the church of St. Sofia. Dvigrad is located 23 kilometers from Rovinj.
Decorated in an Mediterranean style, the apartment San Elena is seconds away from the water, with a beautiful view of the port which is nothing short of surreal after nightfall. Located in the beautiful old town of Rovinj which is bustling with small shops, restaurants, cafés, galleries the apartment is walking distance from the many historic monuments and interesting manifestation which take place there. The most important Rovinj's historic monuments are located from the apartments 5 minutes pleasant walk.
