The Bearn region
This spectacularly beautiful area of France offers ideal relaxation, or alternatively, great activity holidays for all. Choose from days out to the beautiful seaside resorts of the South Atlantic coast, amazing mountain scenery of the Pyrenees or pop over to Northern Spain for extra shopping or sightseeing. This is a truly remarkable region with unspoilt sleepy French villages, beautiful wide fishing rivers and wonderful cuisine. The Pyrenees Atlantique region has an all year round mild climate with hot summers in June, July and August. It is warm with more rain in April and May and the coldest months are in January and February. The mild climate gives lush vegetation and flowers almost all year round making the countryside particularly pretty. It is often possible to enjoy sunny days and alfresco dining right through to December.
Both the Basque and the Bearnaise people are renowned for their pride in their culture and this is reflected in the clean, pretty and well-kept towns and villages and their warm hospitality. Places of interest include, the charming and historic city of Pau; the Pyrenees National Park; the lively seaside resorts of Biarritz, St. Jean De Luz and San Sebastien. There are many great days out to be had for example, walking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, fishing, climbing, tennis and golf and all within easy reach. There are also many rivers with pebble beaches close by to picnic or BBQ with friends and family, alternatively just relax and enjoy the local gastronomic delights.
We are situated in a typical Béarnaise village between the towns of Navarrenx (11km) and Oloron (14km). There is a bakery and a pharmacy at the edge of the village; however, the nearest supermarket is in Navarrenx. The Gave D'Oloron borders the village.
Navarrrenx is a Bastide Town, whose ramparts, church and bell tower, and the imposing St Anthony's Gate are all classified as "Monuments Historiques". It is steeped in history and guided tours are available at 10:00am every Friday between July and September. It is a busy little market town with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. There is a local market every Wednesday and Sunday and it also hosts several colourful fêtes during the summer, including the Fête de Saumon. Navarrenx hosts the World Salmon Fishing Championships every year in the magnificent river, the Gave d'Oloron where you can also try canoeing, rafting and kayaking.
Oloron-Sainte-Marie is a larger town, which has a beautiful cathedral, and the river Gave d'Oloron running through it. There are many shops and restaurants and a local Friday morning market. It is also?the home of Lindt Chocolates! A visit to the factory (and factory shop) is well worth it! Oloron has many sporting activities including whitewater rafting and the waterpark Aquabearn.
L'Hopital St. Blaise (7.5 km) is home to the 12th century Romanesque church with its treasure of Romanesque architecture, the church is a World Heritage site and a historic stop on the ancient Santiago de Compostella pilgrim route. There are two French restaurants which both have alfresco dining for those warm summer nights.
Pau, the capital of the Bearn region (50 minutes), is a beautiful city and the Boulevard de Pyrenees has stunning views of the mountains and the Pyrenees National Park. Enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine in one of the many cafes on the Boulevard. A visit to the Chateau de Pau and the old town, which has a good range of museums, galleries, restaurants and chic shops in its cobbled streets, is a must. Pau is host to the Tour de France cyclists in July every year. Pau also boasts the oldest golf course on Mainland Europe. For motor enthusiasts, Pau closes some of its streets for two weekends in May while it hosts a round of the World Touring Car Championships and the Historique Automobile Grand Prix.
Biarritz (90 minutes) - a chic and vibrant town popular with tourists and surfers, Biarritz has some of the best beaches in Europe and its surfing is world class. Biarritz plays host to an annual surfing championship in July. Good for shops, restaurants and people watching! Further afield on the Atlantic Coast, there are miles of beautiful sandy beaches to explore. Hossegor is also famous for surfing.
The historic city of Bayonne (90 minutes) with its cathedral, medieval ramparts and Musee Bonnat is well worth a visit, as is the pretty fishing port of St Jean de Luz. Here you can watch the fishermen unload their catch or linger over lunch in one of the many seafood restaurants.
During the winter months there are several ski resorts that offer skiing and snowboarding. La Pierre Saint Martin is just over an hour away (www.lapierrestmartin.com) and Gourette can be reached in under 2 hours (www.gourette.com).
If wine is your thing, there are several vineyards on your doorstep. Excellent Jurancon whites, both sweet and dry are produced around Pau. The Pays Basque is famous for its Irouleguy reds and Madiran is also produced nearby. Wine tastings are available at most vineyards.

"Fantastic gite and great hosts"
Great location, one hour from the Pyrenees, one hour from Biariritz. Tranquil village setting with swimming pool and lovely gardens, ideal for children and adults. The Gite has two bedrooms, sleeps 4 very comfortably but two more can be accommodated on the sofa bed. Highly recommend this property, we have already booked our return.
Thank you so much for your positive review and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.
