Description from owner

Situated in the heart of the village of Molyvos (also known as Mythimna) is Captain's View, a beautifully restored stone house retaining Molyvos tradition and with an eye for both Greek style and luxurious detail.

Captain's View is a couple of minutes from the 'agora' (market), the bakery and a well stocked grocery. Imagine newly baked bread, croissants or baguettes, fresh fruit, yoghurt and local honey for breakfast on the balcony. The views from the balcony, sitting room and main bedroom make words like 'spectacular', 'awesome', 'magnificent' and 'magic' seem totally inadequate. It's one's private access to a panorama of natural beauty, a wide bay, the harbour with its yachts, small craft and colourful fishing vessels, distant islands and mountains, and just below, the tiles of the old village roofs.

This is a holiday for people who want to imerse themselves in a Greek village but still stay in a quiet area. For self catering (breakfast on the veranda) getting up when one wants. Watching the sunrise (if you are awake) and the sunset from the balcony.

Northeast Aegean Islands region

There are many different natural environments on the island: scores of virtually untouched coastal fishing villages and beaches which range from golden, black or red sand to pebbles of blazing white quartz; lush mountain river valleys around Aghiasos which is surrounded by chestnut groves; brilliant beaches at Drota, Sigri, Melinda (no relation!) and Eressos (birth place of the sixth century BCE poet Sappho). The salt flats near Kalloni are home to flocks of pink flamingos and many other aquatic birds and thousands of bird-watchers from all over the world visit the island. There is a treeless 'moonscape' around Sigri where an entire forest was 'petrified' by volcanic activity a million years ago, an awesome spectacle.

Most amazing are the twelve million olive trees many of which once provided the island with its wealth. Many towns and villages boast nineteenth century 'oil mansions' and grand oil presses – a few are still in use with others converted into hotels and cultural centres.

Molyvos

Molyvos has everything you need: plenty of shops for groceries and souvenirs, cafes and restaurants, a few funky late night bars, banks, currency exchanges, newsagents, internet cafés and pharmacies. There is a two kilometre long pebble (and sand) beach, its own farms and olive groves, and is close to mountain villages and other attractive sea side and mountain beauty spots.

There are regular buses to nearby coastal villages like Avlaki , Eftalou (a hot springs centre) and Petra with its church high on a rock outcrop and long sandy beach.

“View to die for”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2014

My fighters and I had a fabulous time in Lesvos, made more so by the superb accommodation at Captain's View, with gorgeous views over the Aegean, an easy walk to nearby shops, restaurants, and even convenient parking a short distance away. The facilities are superb, and the ambience fantastic.

“a fabulous location and 'remember when' views!”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2014

My 85 year old mother and I recently spent 2 weeks at The Captain's View. We were both delighted with this comfortable and well appointed home. My mother is relatively fit and the downstairs location of our bedrooms was not a problem for her. The view is stunning as all the photographs portray and the location wonderful, right above the agora and so close to the bakery you can just about smell the fragrance of baking bread. We found the two bedrooms with ensuites worked very well for us and I enjoyed the tucked away aspect of mine while mum enjoyed the view from hers. Theo and Melinda were so helpful in the lead up to our travels and during our stay. It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet them. For us, this truly became our home for two weeks. We have a treasure store of memories and the sunset wine on the balcony with that amazing view is something we will always remember, gaelle

“Captains View: lovely property, sensational views”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2014

We spent a lovely restful week in Captain's View in mid September 2013. The property was exactly as described, wonderful location, close to the bakery and shops with spectacular views from the spacious balcony where we were able to eat all our meals outdoors. The house is spacious, beautifully restored and tastefully refurbished. It is clean and very well maintained. Melinda and Theo provided excellent customer service, advising us about travel arrangements and arranging for a taxi to collect us from the airport. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return again. We visited The Captain's Table (Melinda and Theo's restaurant by the port) and had a wonderful meal of fresh fish-the whitebait came off the boat as we sat at our table!

“Heavenly place for a couple”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2014

Before you get to know the place you might find it a bit pricey, but one day was enough for us to find out that this house is worth every single penny of it's rent: The premises are right in the middle of the beautiful village, yet very, very quiet, only pedestrians and donkeys can use the steep little alleys in this neighbourhood. There is an impeccable view over the bay of Molivos from the awning - equipped balcony. Behind it a spacious living room/ studio with a very well designed kitchen, dish washer included! The broom closet is large enough for a wash machine, rack to dry your laundry, laundry pins etc included. The attic functions as open gallery with sofa and television set, in winter it would probably be a cosy second bedroom, but in summer it is a bit too hot for a good night's sleep. Two bedrooms with private bathrooms are downstairs (the house is built on a steep slope), one has a very nice view indeed with a big orange tree right in front, the other would be ideal as a walk in closet, for a really nice bedroom it is a bit dark, as the window opens to a narrow pedestrians alley, so no privacy either, unless you draw your curtains and keep the windows shut. If not, you might find a cat in search for a night's company in your bed! In summary a dreamy, dreamy stay for a couple, with more people around we would have felt a bit crowded in. We stayed already twice and plan to visit this heavenly place regularly!

“Beautiful”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2014

We had a nice holiday in Molivos in September 2013. It was my 9th visit to this village. Molivos is to us a paradise on earth, and we recommend it to anyone! We enjoyed every minute of our stay at The Captains View, it was an exciting house with all facilities and we hope to be back soon. In the harbour we enjoyed many good meals at the restaurant The Captains Table. Once again thank you for your hospitality and friendliness! Best regards Anna

“All you could want: charm, central location, super view”

Reviewed 29 Dec 2013

Wonderful old house updated to modern conveniences. In a great location in the central village. Fantastic view from its large terrace. It feels a bit of a hike up to the house at first, but it's not really, considering the whole village is up-and-down. And every step is worth it. The Captain's View is charming, comfortable, fully-equipped, and private. And bonus: there are no more-accommodating owners on Earth!

“One Of A Kind In The Village”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2013

We stay here every time we're in Molivos. It's perfect house for two or four with two double rooms downstairs each with its own bathroom. Upstairs is a great kitchen, washing machine and even wifi - everything convenience of home in a Greek village. And you also get a wonderful terrace with a view of the sun setting on the sea every evening. The only thing it lacks is a garden, but one can live with that for a week or two.

“The Captain's view, an overall joy.”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2013

An overall joy. The house is beautifully situated in the centre of the city, within walking distance of everything interesting. The house is rustic, with a charming aura to it, and I would recommend it to everyone interested in living luxurious "Greek-style".

“Simply Wonderful”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2012

My wife and I had the great good fortune to stay at The Captain's View for a little over a month, early June to early July, 2012 and wished we could have stayed longer... Being in this lovely cottage was a magical vacation experience, one we'll never forget. The cottage itself is really charming, very tastefully decorated and has all the amenities listed. It sits perched in a neighborhood setting with stunning panoramic views of the Molyvos harbor, beach area and out onto the Aegean. Neighboring villages dot the distant shorelines and hills. We were very happy to find that the cottage was impeccably clean when we arrived and was kept that way throughout our stay since someone comes to clean and change linens and towels twice a week. The kitchen is well equipped which enabled us to cook in easily, including two cooking lessons with Maria, the owner's aunt. Also, having wireless internet in the cottage was a very big plus and made it easy to stay in touch back home. Another big plus for us, The Captain's View is conveniently located close to the bakery and several mini-marts. There's also a local butcher a little bit farther down and just off "Wisteria Lane". A brief word about the owners, Melinda and Theo. They were wonderful! We cannot thank them enough for all they did to make our stay enjoyable and memorable. We would not have had the great experience we did were it not for them. They were outgoing, helpful and so very generous with their time, such as helping with taxis arrangements and suggesting things to do. On one occasion, Melinda even spent over 30 minutes on the phone for me trying to resolve my greek cell phone problems. I'm still amazed at how concerned and helpful she was. We were frequent diners at their wonderful restaurant, The Captain's Table. Food and hospitality alike were wonderful. With its active fleet of small fishing boats, charming cobblestone streets (comfortable walking shoes are essential) and open air restaurants, Molyvos was everything we hoped it would be.

“Why stay anywhere else?”

Reviewed 8 Aug 2012

Absolutely lovely property to stay in to enjoy Molyvos. Comfortable beds (a rarity in Greece!), a "proper" kitchen, and a terrace with 180º views of the Aegean. What more could you ask for? Local bakery and food shop? No problem - a minute away. Tavernas? Lots to choose from within walking distance. Any reasons for not going there? Can't think of any.
