The Calabria region
Rich in cultural history the area has been a hidden gem for many Europeans, but now the region is being discovered with the help of low cost airlines flying directly to Lamezia Terme people are now enjoying the rustic charms and breathtaking scenery along with miles and miles of beautiful beaches to soak up the sun.
Calabria region weather enjoys a classic southern Mediterranean climate with some variations due to its geography. The coastline stretches for over 800 km and inland is mainly rugged and mountainous where distinct climatic patterns sometimes occur.
Temperatures are warmest here than any other mainland Italian region and the dry summer season is marginally longer, lasting from April until the end of October. Often the warm weather continues well into autumn on the west coast with the advent of hot sirocco winds from North Africa. Temperatures remain high in the main summer months and the skies are clear with low rainfall on the coast while winters are mild and pleasant.
Marina di Caulonia
Caulonia, like the neighbouring towns of Monasterace and Roccella Jonica, has plenty of religious and gastronomic festivals to celebrate. During August there are several important festivals, notably Tarantella Power which celebrates the fiery passionate tarantella dance that originated in Calabria.
Caulonia perches atop a hill that rises some 300 meters from the Ionian coast and sits between two rivers, facing the sea. The breathtaking scenery surrounding the town has made Caulonia a popular spot since Roman times. The town boasts Byzantine frescos, a Norman castle and some interesting architecture. Caulonia might be an unlikely setting for a film festival, but it hosts the Festival Del Giovane Cinema Italian in July.
