The Channel Islands region

The Bailiwick of Guernsey consists of the main island of Guernsey and also the islands of Herm, Sark, Brechou, Jethou and Alderney. All islands except Alderney are close to and easily accessible from Guernsey. Alderney is a little harder to get to - but worth it when you make the effort.

Alderney is the only true Channel Island lying in the English Channel between the south coast of England and the coast of Normandy, France. The island is only 8 miles from France at the closest point, approximately 80 miles from the English coast and approx 22 miles from Guernsey. On a clear day it is possible to see the Normandy coast, and the islands of Guernsey, Sark, Herm, Jethou and Brechou, with the larger island of Jersey, approx 45 miles away in the far distance.

Alderney benefits from more sunshine and less rain than the UK and frost in winter is very rare.

Longis

Alderney has beautiful unspoilt beaches and is a very peaceful place with little traffic and only 2000 people. The island measures only three miles long and one and a half miles wide.

Longis beach and common are at the eastern tip of the island, closest to France. The white sand of Longis beach is very popular in the summer with its wide sandy beach perfect for swimming. The Isle of Raz with its Victorian fort sits in the bay and is accessible via a causeway exposed at mid-low tide. Longis common is a nature reserve and many rare species of flora and fauna are to be found there, including the rare blonde hedgehog. The town of St Anne is approximate 2miles west of Longis - a leisurely walk or cycle. There is a good choice of bars and restaurants on the island and the people are friendly and unhurried.

“Peaceful”

Reviewed 27 Jun 2016

Lovely location with views of the bay, The accommodation is excellent with one bedroom downstairs and one upstairs, the lounge/kitchen is upstairs with all the accoutrements you could wish for. Everything is spotlessly clean and tidy, especially the linen and snowy white fluffy towels. Heating is there if you need it including a wood burning stove. You only have to ask Gill or Nigel and they will do their utmost to help if you are stuck with anything. We lost our USB charger and Gill produced one to keep for the week. Outside is a very pleasant garden with picnic table with chairs and nice new cushions for extra comfort. It is so peaceful and quiet here. Wood flooring and the ceilings too are made of light coloured wood make the place feel bright, warm and homely. Because of the amount and quality of the wood flooring, we were requested to remove our shoes by the front door, which makes sense, as the gravel from the drive and the beach gets into the tread on shoes and would quickly score the flooring, we were happy to comply with this, however mounting the attractive open plan spiral staircase in socks was somewhat hazardous because of the shiny surfaced stairs. Not only that but the staircase could be problematical for the no-so-nimble or larger framed people as the staircase is about 24" wide. Finally, If I have to be picky, then it is the extremely small size of the hand wash basins, shaving and brushing teeth was a bit cramped especially with a bathroom cabinet which stuck out over a narrow sink. It is very difficult to be picky in a property of this calibre. I can certainly recommend this property

Thanks Marie for your comments, we agree the bathroom sinks are a little small - we lived with them ourselves for nearly three years! However we felt it was still better to have smaller sinks as the rooms are not large. We do have a back staircase for anyone who doesn't feel able to use the spiral staircase too, so can offer an alternative if any prospective guests are concerned about that. Thanks for staying with us and hope to welcome you back some time in the future.
