Description

Old stone farmhouse with lots of space inside and out, which has been tastefully restored to be both traditional and comfortable. The rooms are big with lots of light and the environment is child friendly. There's a sun-trap terrace on the South East side, and several large outdoor tables for dining al fresco. We have a bespoke stone barbecue, and a large children's sand pit on either side of the lawn where you can play family games such as Badminton or Boules. There is no other accommodation on site so you have privacy and sole use of the swimming pool which has views, is fenced with a lockable gate, and runs on a salt-water system which is much nicer for eyes and skin than old style chlorine pools. The property includes 3 hectares of land with gardens, an orchard, a small wood in which kids love to make camps, and lots of grassland with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. Further details indoors

The house is that it is pretty, light, comfortable and spacious. It is simply decorated with some antique furniture, and has the feel of a relaxed family home. The kitchen is huge with a long table specially made for it in the traditional style of the area. The kitchen has worktops made from a walnut tree from our property, a 5 burner gas hob and a large multi-function oven. The living room has two sofas, chairs, a piano and keyboard, and a superb open fire which is lovely in the colder months of the year. It has double doors which open onto the large terrace. All bedrooms are large and comfortable. There is one double bedroom downstairs, with an en-suite bathroom, and the others are upstairs. The house has 2 staircases which makes it great fun to play games in!

Further details outdoors

If you like having plenty of outside space this is the house for you. It is also completely private as there are no other properties on site, so you have use of the grounds and pool all to yourself. There are gardens around the house, an orchard and grassland, and even a small wood - 7 acres in all. There's lots of garden furniture - a table and chairs on the terrace and another under the trees for the heat of the day. There are sun loungers at the pool and hammocks hanging under the beech trees. And a swing seat at the top of the hill to sit in the shade and admire the view! A swing for the children hang from a lime tree. Children love playing in the little forest. There is ample room in the gravelled courtyard for cars to park and turn.

The Pays de la Loire region

La Tavellerie is in the Vendee Bocage which is a hilly, wooded area of Western France retaining the charm of the traditional French countryside. The climate is reputedly the second best in France after the South of France. The summers are hot but not stiflingly so, and the winters mild on account of the gulf stream hitting the coast nearby. The area is famous as a centre of the counter revolution in France and there are interesting historical sites to see, such as the Abbaye Nieul , as well as the Chateaux of the Loire further afield. The Vendee’s sandy beaches are an hour’s drive away – our guests love the Plage du Veillon which backs onto a nature reserve and has many pools for paddling in and exploring. Also a big hit is Puy de Fou – France’s no.1 theme park which is 45 mins away. Rather than rides it is a series of spectacular shows which tell the story of the area on a grand scale, so for example to cover the Roman period there is a chariot race in a reconstructed Roman Amphitheatre! Tourists come to the Vendee just for this, so do book in advance. La Rochelle, an interesting historic harbour town, with a popular aquarium, is an hour and a quarter away, as is the famous Ile de Re.

La Caillere-Saint-Hilaire

From our meadow you can see the Donjon at Bazoges en Pareds 3kms away. It is a lovely medieval remnant with medieval garden and local life museum attached. The Auberge next door is a good local restaurant, and there are small shops and other amenities in the village. There are lots of walks marked out in the woods between us and La Caillere, and cycle routes too. Fontenay le Comte, 25 mins away, is the old capital of the area and has a traditional market on Saturdays. Nearby is the ancient Mervent-Vouvant forest which is lovely for walks, horseriding (at Ripauds stables near Vouvant) and there is also a great tree top adventure park in the forest near Mervent. Vouvant itself is well worth visiting - a very pretty town on a bend in the river with a tower supposedly built by the fairy Melusine in one night. The Pic Vert nearby is a great place for Galettes and a salad, in a lovely setting. Hiring a punt at Maillezais is a lovely way to see the green and peaceful network of canals south of Fontenay, and the horses of the Harras near La Roche sur Yon is a great half-day trip. The Indian Forest – an adventure park in the trees for those looking for an adrenaline rush- is very popular, and there are several other local attractions on that theme.

Our house is in a quiet peaceful neighbourhood so is suitable for those who want to ‘get away from it all’, so you could equally well have a wonderful relaxing holiday without leaving the property save to buy food!

“Absolute bliss”

Reviewed 21 Jul 2015

We stayed in La Tavellerie for two weeks. The whole experience, from booking to departing, was first class. We fell in love with the place as soon as we arrived, and fell in love again every day. There were only two of us in a five bedroom house, so we only used one bedroom, within which the bed was extremely comfortable. All bathrooms were very clean and looked recently renovated. The kitchen was very well equipped and we bought very little other than daily produce. The seating areas outside in the garden were wonderful and we made good use of these to enjoy the well thought out and beautiful gardens. The pool was great, and was essential during our stay just to keep cool :) There was lots of activities for young children and we could see that it would be an ideal location for a family holiday. There is lots to see and do in the surrounding area if you can drag yourself away from the house and gardens. Shopping is a stress free chore, with Hyper U in Chantonnay selling anything you could want or need. Another of the outstanding experiences was the friendliness and helpfulness of the owner. Clarissa made sure we were welcomed and was on hand for any queries that we had, always returning e-mails promptly.

“Wonderful, magical and fun.”

We have stayed here several times - and each time we fall in love all over again, with the house, the serene and historic countryside, and the charm of small French village life. We stayed in wintertime and we love the traditional kitchen, enjoy cooking with our family and sitting around a fire outside or inside by the fireplace, or on the al fresco patio looking at the magnificent views across the Vendee. La Tavellerie is a warm and beckoning home, with all the charm of a period house in a beautiful location. The owners are attentive and the service has always been exemplary. We want to come back in the spring or summer and experience a different season, but we loved the winter and coziness of the house. One of the real joys for us was being able to connect with our family, without the distractions of television and noise. Country walks, exploring the historical villages and ancient sites, and of course, wonderful French food and wine, were the highlights of our visits.
