Location description from owner

The Catalonia region

Less than one hour's drive from the house you can reach the famous Costa Brava coastal region, with plenty of beaches and sailing ports, still offering some "hidden gems" for visitors who seek them out. Small villages like Cadaqués, Begur or LLafranc have attracted artists such as Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró or Pablo Picasso and still inspire many contemporary artists.

Between Girona and the Costa Brava is the Empordà, a region of countryside, with plenty of small charming medieval villages, as well as wheat and sunflower fields that bloom with poppies in spring, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes of Spain.

Girona is well known to professional and amateur golfers. Only 22 kilometres from the city is the PGA Catalunya Resort, which since its opening in 1999 has quickly gained an impeccable international reputation and is currently ranked 2nd in Spain, 3rd in continental Europe and, most recently, among the 100 best golf courses in the world. As well, there are a further eight high-quality 18-hole golf courses available less than one hour's drive from the property.

Girona is also a world famous destination for professional and amateur cyclists. Lance Armstrong lived and trained in Girona while winning seven consecutive “Tour de France”, and his key domestique, also a former US champion, has been a distinguished guest of our property.

Only a few minutes from Alemanys 5 there is also a vast forest with hundreds of signposted off-road mountain-bike routes which can take you all the way to the coast.

Girona

Girona is a charming small city located 100 km North of Barcelona and 100 km South of Perpignan (France).

It is one of the richest cities in Spain. Girona has his own International Airport offering regular flights to more than 50 cities around Europe. By the end of 2012 Girona will be a stop of the high-speed train that is to link Barcelona and Paris.

Girona has one of the most important mediaeval quarters in Spain, plenty of interesting historical buildings, one of the best-preserved old Jewish quarters in Europe and a magnificent Cathedral featuring the widest Gothic nave in the world with a breadth of 22 meters.

The city also offers a vibrant shopping district with a combination of traditional goods and renowed international brands. The walking areas include plenty of cozy coffees and restaurants that offer a variety of culinary experiences.

Girona is also well known for its cultural life. As well as a number of museums, the city has the most important autumn festival in Spain, “Temporada Alta”, offering three months of avant-garde international music, dance and theater. In addition, several jazz, classical, rock, flamenco, traditional or world music concerts are programmed during all the year.

Furthermore, the relatively small size of the city and its urban structure means all these activities can be enjoyed without having to take the car.

Girona is also a renowned culinary destination. Home of exquisite “sea and mountain” recipes, the city hosts “El Celler de Can Roca” ranked second best restaurant in the world. Several Michelin starred restaurants are less than one hour's drive from the property.

During wintertime, a good option is to take advantage of the Pyrenees ski resorts that can be reached by car in less than two hours. The Girona area is also renowed as a wellness and spa destination, offering top quality thermal baths, spa and wellness centres.

Last but not least, the city of Barcelona is only at one-hour by road or train from Girona.

“It was bliss to stay in this stunning mix of ancient and modern”

Reviewed 30 Nov 2015

This old stone house is in a glorious setting, up by the Cathedral in the heart of the Old Town. Thanks to E Badiu's wonderfully sensitive remodelling there are delightful views all around from its windows and loggia. Inside, the house is spacious, light and super-comfortable, with every modern appliance, yet it breathes a magical sense of age and peace. Owner Joan Manuel R and house manager Montse Ollé were exceptionally helpful to us. Walking down the narrow cobbled streets of Girona Old Town to reach the river is a delight -- and staying in E Badiu is a rare treat.

“I want to move in!!”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2015

We chose this apartment because we love architecture and especially architecture that includes the transformation and modernisation of old, existing structures. E Badiu is amazing and is exceptionally well done. We absolutely LOVED the space, the incredible design and attention to detail. Montse was very helpful with suggestions as to where to eat and walk in the city. Our only regret is that our stay was so short - we had come to Girona for a meal at El Cellar de Can Roca and the combination of the spectacular apartment and food we enjoyed made a for a very indulgent escape. I would recommend this apartment with no reservation. Stay for a couple of days - the location is fantastic and the apartment is incredibly well appointed with everything you need.

“Excellent apartment in perfect location”

A beautiful apartment with everything you need: a fully stocked kitchen, several bathrooms, plenty of space, fantastic views. The location was wonderful and my family and I are very glad we chose this option over a traditional hotel.

“lux penthouse with plenty of room”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2013

luxury penthouse, pictures on the web offer an excellent representation of this beautiful home. elegant, charming mix of modern, old and industrial, extremely well appointed, great linen, spotless and has everything you will need, great light and outdoor balcony, shops a short walk to get supplies. location may be a challenge to some as it sits on the top of the hill of the old town which is easily within walking distance but does involve a couple of hundred cobble stone steps each way. penthouse requires the ability to manage stairs inside/ master bath also requires good balance due to interesting layout . may represent a challege to those with significant wieght bearing issues. secure bike storage an asset. concerge is excellent, due to delays we arrived around 2300hrs and hungry. She looked after us with bread/cheese and beer.impecable service.

“Architecturally stunning, aesthetically inspiring, and lovingly crafted.”

Stunning apartment in a great location within the old town. Modern, clean, spacious and very luxurious. Perfect for a couple or friends getaway to beautiful Girona. Alemanys 5's is absolutely stunning because of its crafty engagement with its context. It modernises a Sixteenth century medieval quarter to make a considered and contemporary scheme with breathtakingly calm interiors. The owners were a delight to deal with and all the booking and general administration was a breeze. I cannot recommend this property highly enough! Perfect!

“Home away from home in Spain”

Reviewed 3 Feb 2013

From initial contact Juan, Anna and Montse were wonderful hosts who went beyond the call of duty to assist with our needs and requests and for this we were extremely grateful and wish to thank them. The Apartment was exactly as depicted - it has been lovingly and sympathetically renovated to the closest detail and is a real credit to both Anna and Juan. El Badiu offers wonderful living spaces with an enviable ambiance - all needs have been considered and everything is in place to make your stay very special in an amazingly beautiful part of Spain. We are already looking forward to a return visit and hope we can once more experience Alemanys magic.

“experience that appeals to all senses”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2012

We decided to spend our vacation in Girona because of this house which we saw in Dezeen Internet design magazine. A master peace of architecture the house has exceeded all our expectations. The architecture of the house is strong and clean, reflects the spirit of the place and combines old and new in a wise, accurate manner. The house is free of any excessive ornamentalism and it is the architectural solutions that give it warmth and beauty. The outmost attention has been given to each and every detail (including the black soap in the bathrooms…), and the unique integration of all the details and materials creates harmony, peace and a sense that everything is in its exact place, as if it has always been there. In spite of its great beauty, this is a living house which enables convenient and natural flow. We soaked up atmosphere of the house for five days, sitting in the amazing balcony overlooking the university, hearing music from the selection of discs on offer, enjoying wonderful breakfasts in the lovely, well equipped kitchen and enjoying every single moment. We wish to command the kindness and warm attention of the owner, Juan Ribera. Due to family circumstances, we were forced to change the date of our arrival, and he unhesitatingly agreed to find an alternative date for us although it was no longer possible to rent the house to anyone else on the original dates. Upon our arrival a bottle of wine with a Hebrew label awaited us – a small, touching gesture of attention. The pretty housekeeper, with her red car, followed this very same spirit giving us a warm, homely feeling. And as food is a must – the NU restaurant, which is located at the center of town, is recommended. Order two dishes – cannelloni with sea fruit and frutti di bosco (mixed berries)and pork chops. Delicious! Efrat and Calman Shemi

What a fantastic apartment!! We really enjoyed our stay. There was nothing we needed that wasn't provided and everyone was very friendly and helpful to deal with. We will definitely be back!

“SImply perfect”

Reviewed 12 Oct 2012

We had the most incredible stay at Alemanys5. The property is the most beautiful space we've ever stayed in and had a wonderful holiday. Such a well thought out space and we felt completely at home from the moment the exceptionally lovely house-keeper greeted us on our arrival. We spent so much time at the apartment - cooked beautiful meals, had a fire in the evenings on the balcony - we didn't want to leave. Girona is a lovely old historic town and being right in the heart of the old centre really was position perfect. Make sure you book to dine at El Celler de Can Roca (many months in advance!) - that was an exceptional experience in itself.
