Getting around

Bikes are perfect for many local sights including Mervent forest, Vouvant, Mervent village, and many local cycle paths. (There are some interesting hills in places though!). Bikehiredirect will rent you bikes and deliver to the door if you don't have your own. Cycling is also the best way to see the Ile de Ré if you take a day trip over there, drive your bikes to the La Rochelle side of the bridge and cycle over for free. Or you can hire bikes on the island. Cars are very useful for the less energetic, or further away sights, and parking is free in the main town Fontenay and in most other local villages.

Interaction with guest

We love to give our guests as much information as possible before their arrival to help them plan their trip. We will send you plenty of tourist brochures, FAQs, and recommendations of things to do nearby. Caroline is also available by email or phone to answer any questions. Our friendly English speaking caretakers live about 20 minutes away and are on hand should you have any issues. Keys will be made available to you in a locked key safe, the details of which will be sent to you before your arrival.

House rules

No fireworks, outdoor fires or Chinese lanterns allowed. Barbecue on the terrace is ok.

With respect to our neighbours, noise outside after 10pm should be limited to quiet talking. Alternatively, move any party indoors and shut doors, the property is detached and quite soundproof.

Bins are collected on Monday after lunch, and wheelie bins should be put out next to the road on Monday before noon.

Pets (maximum 2 well-behaved dogs) are not allowed in bedrooms or on furniture.

“Lovely house, great location, good value.”

Massive house in a quiet village and country location, but loads to do nearby. It would easily accommodate a couple of family's or friends travelling together. Was excellent value and easy to find even though it was our first time travelling in France. Loads of room and books and games, videos and DVD's made it feel very homely. Even a piano, although the kids wouldn't leave it alone so I'm not sure that was a bonus. My son who is 7 loved the table football and ping pong downstairs, so lots to do when hanging around the house. We ate on the veranda most nights with views out over farmland. It is not overlooked. There is a big forest with loads of walks and a retro theme park which was excellent. There's a zoo in there too, all 10 minutes away. The beaches were 45mins away and lovely and deserted. We had a day of culture in La Rochelle which was an hours drive and you must go there, it's lovely, historic old architecture, if a bit overpriced. There was lots more to do but we only stayed a week. A great base for any holiday.
