The Central Portugal region
Portugal has long been one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations but it is only recently that tourists have discovered the huge appeal of the Silver Coast (Costa Prata). With vast stretches of perfect, shimmering, sandy beaches, the length of the Portuguese Silver Coast, its growing popularity comes as no surprise.
Benefiting from amazing natural landscapes, a rich cultural heritage, numerous unspoilt and charming Portuguese towns, and a number of top class golf courses, when you visit the Silver Coast you'll find everything you need for the perfect holiday.
The weather on the Silver Coast is close to perfect - the Winter temperature averages 17C and the Summer 27C. The refreshing sea breeze helps to temper the Summer heat.
The beautiful and charming village of Dornes, on the shores of the Castelo de Bode Dam Lake, has less than 800 inhabitants yet attracts thousands of visitors every year. The stunning views, five-sided medieval tower and the 12th century church are some of Dornes main attractions.
Situated 10 km northeast from Ferreira do Zêzere, Dornes is one of the most interesting towns in the central region of Portugal. The village is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets, with whitewashed buildings that are built on the hillside above Castelo do Bode Lake. There are a number of cafe bars, hotels and artisan shops in the village.
The views from Dornes are stunning. The hills are covered in pine and eucalyptus trees which slope down to the Castelo do Bode Lake. The village is popular due to its easy access for swimmers and sunbathers wishing to get close to the water's edge.
Dornes is an ideal destination for fishing, sailing, swimming, canoeing, waterskiing, cycling and walking.

"Beautiful house in a classic village overlooking the river"
Beautifully restored house in a small hilltop village. There is plenty of outside patio space overlooking a scenic river. Even though it is a compact village, it feels very private and we rarely saw anyone else and felt as though we had the town to ourselves. There are only homes and a church in the village, with a small grill on the edge. Groceries and petrol are several miles away but the roads are good and divided highways are easy to reach. You will definitely require a car and GPS is recommended. The house is on 3 levels with stairs. There are no bedrooms on the entry level so it is not a place for the mobility impaired. Also, the living room is upstairs with a fairly short railing (by US standards) so watch the kids and elderly. There are 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms attached- perfect for "non-family" groups. The owner and property manager could not have been easier to work with. They provided great prearrival information and met us at the house when we arrived. Contact the owner for additional photos, if desired.
