Malindi Township is an interesting mixture of Arab, Swahili and Colonial architecture. It is a busy thriving little town with much to offer in the way of shops, restaurants whose diversity of culinary styles reflect the very cosmopolitan nature of its residents. It radiates out from the old square on one side of which lies Malindi beach and the sea. This beach runs for about 14 km, where the body boarding and surfing can be excellent. Transport is very easy around the town and area by tuk-tuk. alindi.

From its airport, some 15 min from the house, are daily flights to and from Nairobi, Mombasa, Lamu, and other destinations. Windsurfing, kite-boarding, reef-walking, deep-sea fishing.

Location description from owner

The Coast Province region

Malindi is the second largest coastal town after Mombasa. There are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing in and around Malindi. The town was an important Swahili settlement founded in the 14th century. Many Swahili buildings that clearly reflect the influences of Middle-Eastern architecture have survived in the old town area of Malindi. The town also has several remainders from the time the Portuguese ruled Malindi.

Watamu to the South, has Gedi ruins, before driving down to the beach itself, which is truly spectacular in places.

Casuarina

Both Malindi and Watamu have Marine National Parks, and the goggling is very good.

Scuba diving is available, as is Kite surfing, Wind Surfing, Riding, and other water sports.

Tsavo National Park is in easy reach, a 3 hour drive, with much choice of camps to stay to view the animals.

“beautiful house, beautiful beach, wonderful staff”

Reviewed 29 Mar 2016

Ritchie house is beautiful, coral and sand beaches out front were beautiful, staff were great, cooking was excellent. We liked how easily the staff arranged fish, prawns, calamari, crab to be brought to the house for purchase from a local fishmonger. We liked what an excellent cook we had! Owner Vivienne was very responsive during booking. The house and grounds were very clean and well-tended. Beds were good not great, but rooms were very clean and A/C was available in 3 of the bedrooms (fans in the others) and worked very well, except when power was out for an extended period along much of South coast, so we suffered a bit in the March heat. But overall we had an excellent time and recommend it highly.

“Perfect beach front house for a stay in Malindia”

Reviewed 16 Mar 2016

Could not have asked for a better place to stay and relax in Malindi. The house is right on the ocean, just a few steps down to the beach. Francis and the rest of the staff cooked all of our meals and made us feel at home.

“Excellent!”

“Amazing, relaxing beach front retreat!”

Ritchie house is an absolutely amazing. From the landscape, to the decor, the vast library of books, the outdoor sitting areas; everything is beautiful. I went my extended family, we were 9 in total with ages ranging from 60 years to 18 months and everybody had something to do. The staff are very attentive; Francis is a great cook, Justus and Richard were very friendly and accommodating. Francis arranged for fresh sea-food to be delivered at our doorstep every morning, we were spoiled for choice. The beach is literally 2 minutes away which made for lovely dips in the ocean. The Malindi Marine park offices are a 10 minute walk away from the house which was very convinient. We were able to organize a snorkelling trip to the Marine Park. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The outdoor sitting areas are relaxing and beautiful. I especially loved the hanging day bed under the tree. I'll definitely be back at Ritchie house and recommend it to my friends.

I am happy that your family had such a good stay. It was very straightforward dealing with your booking.

Very attentive staff! Richard always smiling and ready to give any information required. Francis good chef. Lovely garden, great view of the ocean, large rooms with big beds with fitted mosquito nets. The property is in a very quiet area with easy access to the shops. Loved the sitting areas out.

Ritchie House is absolutely wonderful. We felt immediately relaxed when we arrived and Francis, Richard and Justus were brilliant at keeping us relaxed the whole week. Beautiful location, delicious food, great books on the shelves, and a very easy place to be. Mohamed the taxi driver was also very reliable and kind. Malindi is a very nice town with real atmosphere, some great restaurants and very easy to get around with Tuks Tuks or a Boda Boda. Thank you for lending us your lovely family house.

“Perfect House, Perfect Location, Amazing Food”

Reviewed 13 Jan 2014

Three of us stayed at this amazing house over Christmas. It was beyond what we had hoped. The location was brilliant - private, easy beach access, back from the road, views from every angle. If you want a relaxing beach holiday where relaxation is paramount, look no further. Additionally, the three staff are unobtrusive and welcoming. Francis, the cook, delivered daily surprises. His imaginative dishes delighted us every day. We'd simply give him some cash to buy fresh seafood, fruit etc each day and he'd provide restaurant-style meals. In fact, we ventured out only once to eat at a nearby restaurant and wished we'd stuck with Francis and his cooking. We paid three times the price for not even half the quality. Can't wait to be back at this house.

“Beautiful secluded house by the beach”

Reviewed 18 Mar 2013

This is a lovely place to stay. The location couldn't be more perfect. it is wonderfully hidden away, yet just set back from the beach, with private steps down onto the sand. The garden is large, with mature trees and shrubs offering welcome shade and beautiful flowers. It is almost on its own little promontory, and you can saunter to the end and watch the fishing dhows come and go and marvel at how different the beach looks at different states of the tide. The house itself is big and full of character. It is a perfect place to really relax....large open verandahs give plenty of airy comfortable spots to sit, bookshelves are crammed with interesting books, and paintings and carvings abound. All the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The bathrooms are simple but adequate. The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient and the food they cooked for us was fantastic. There were only 4 of us staying, but the house could easily accommodate 8 or 10. We loved it and would very happily go again.
