The Calabria region
Calabria is full of cultural and scenic highlights, which are worthwhile discovering. Spectacular beaches, a crystal blue sea, wild-romantic unspoiled landscapes, millennium-old culture and history and, not least, culinary delights make your holiday an exceptional and unforgettable experience.
Calabria is the most southern point of the boot, to a large extent still unaffected by the mass tourism. Miles-long coasts alternating with white sandy beaches, lonely rocky bays, steep cliffs which dive into a sea of many shades of blue and turquoise colors, constantly changing landscapes and millennium-old history make this region of Italy so special.
Calabria is a place where you can start your day with taking a swim on the fantastic beaches and end it with watching a spectacular sunset. Anyone who loves the sea will appreciate the mild climate and the clear sea with its magnificent blue colours and its clearness which has been awarded the Blue Flag of Europe for several years.
Capo Vaticano, the last strip of land before the Straits of Messina, thrusts dramatically from the sea.
The sea that caresses the snow-white beaches and the wildness of the rocks make visitors lose their sense of time, as it conceals beneath its waves the secrets of ancient shipwrecks, the relics of which have frequently been discovered. Life in the area is dominated by fishing; its waters are visited by the great swordfish, tuna, blue sharks etc. as they cross the Capo Vaticano every spring. Choose your holiday accommodation in Capo Vaticano a magical place for your holiday dream's.
The views from Capo Vaticano over the seas are superb, and on a clear day you can see the top of Stromboli and the other Aeolian islands looming out of the horizon. Mini cruises to the Aeolian Isles depart from Tropea / Capo Vaticano around 7.00am,check out ferry companies Comerci and Tropeamar, which brings you on a daily trip to Stromboli, the famous active volcano. This can also be seen on an evening trip which is amazing
The beautiful Groticelli beach is also a short 5min drive away with lidos and various water activities available.
A visit to 'il Faro' a lighthouse along a costal walk / track is a must, its a 5 min drive away, with shops and restaurant along scenic walk.
Calabria is a region of outstanding national beauty, with not only beautiful mountains and beaches but national parks. One of the most famous is Sila which is north of Lamezia Terme.
Another is the Aspromonte National park, which is located further south in the Southern strip of Appennine mountains.
Ricadi is the home of the chipola (red onion) and many locals sell their produce at the side of roads. There is a pharmacy in Ricadi and post office in the villages. The Vibo Shopping Centre is 15 minutes from the apartment in Vibo Valencia where there is a large Spar supermarket and department stores
Tropea is a must when visiting this fabulous with its cobbled streets and beautiful restaurants and amazing views. The Tropea Blues Festival starts in early September. The beach has an island with an unused monastery on it, and on the beach Passo Cavalieri you can rent canoes, jet skies and sail boats. The new marine facilities of Tropea includes all water activities. There are diving schools at the marina of Tropea such as Torre Ruffa Diving Club.

"A pleasant stay in a very different part of Italy"
We stayed at Sea View House in August of this year and had a pleasant stay once we found it!!Sea View House is not a house and the name is a little misleading. The property is indeed an apartment within a small and quiet complex opposite the Delta Residence in the hills of Santa Maria. It would be really helpful if the property had some signage outside as there was none and not only did we have trouble locating it but when picked up by taxis several times ,the drivers were very harassed that they could not locate us. The delta residence is where the shared pool, garden and loungers are located and this is indeed a delightful and restful area to relax on and the grounds are beautifully kept. The apartment itself was disappointingly smaller than we had anticipated. However, it was very clean with incredibly comfortable beds, mattresses and pillows. The kitchen was very well stocked with plenty of cooking utensils – means a lot to us as we love to cook when away. The large fridge/freezer was very welcome. The area is quiet and no disturbances were apparent. The property is located in the hills of Santa Maria and the local beach is about 10 minutes’ walk away but you would need to be extremely fit to make the walk back as it very steep and not at all pleasant as sadly there is problem with waste disposal in this part of the Calabrian region which resulted in unsightly piles of rubbish pile dumped on the roadside. This is real shame. You will most definitely require a car but don’t make the mistake we did. We hired a nine seater Mercedes to accommodate six of us and our luggage – the roads in this region are not built for large cars and there were some alarming journeys! We found some really nice local restaurants included Di Mercurio,Seaview restaurant an La pergola in Tropea.Tropea is nice to go to and there is a car park by the cemetery which was easy to park in even in August and as all the parking barriers were broken it was free! Five minutes’ drive from the apartment is Groticelli beach which be warned in August is heaving. Sun bed are 20 eurors a day to hire with an umbrella. You can park close to the beach .There is steep shelf into the sea once you have gone in a couple of feet so be careful if you have toddlers. The water is clear and the scenery rugged and beautiful – if you walk further round the beach it is quitter and the coves stunning – take a pedalo or small boat to appreciate the scenery from the water. We did three lovely day trips, one to Sicily , one to the Aeolian Islands and a day at sea on the Etika boat – fishing and swimming, amazing lunch. These were all booked with CTS agency in Tropea who were superb. Shopping– there is a “Big Market” in Santa Maria which stocks essentials ,we found the best option was Conad on the way to Tropea- here is where you can see the best sunset too! The owner Jason was really helpful and swift in communications. The booking system with Trip Advisor was not a good experience however, as messages kept not getting through .This was resolved once we had paid and could have direct access to Jason. I will most definitely not use Trip Advisor to book a property in the future.

"Fabulous Holiday Villa in a brilliant part of Calabria. Close to the beach too"
We had to attend a wedding in Spilinga. As the reception was being held in the Sunshine Hotel, we were looking for accommodation in the Capo Vaticano/Ricadi area. I travelled with my wife and 2 kids (5 & 7). The Management team contacted us well before the trip and gave us great directions to the villa. Even though it was spring, the weather was OK. It only rained a couple of times during our stay. Well it was March. The villa had 3 great bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Clean and modern.Having the 2 bathrooms was a godsend. It was close to the beach and I believe the pool is open later during the summer. The kids had enough entertainment at the local beaches and in Tropea. The restaurant staff are very child friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Cant reccommend this villa enough and we are seriously considering a summer visit next year.
