Location description from owner

The Zadar County region

Ugljan is a Croatian island and the first in the Zadar Archipelago. It is located northwest of the island of Pašman and southeast of the islands of Rivanj and Sestrunj. Separated from the mainland by the Zadar Channel, it is connected with the island of Pašman by a bridge spanning over the Ždrelac Strait. The island is connected to the mainlands harbor in Zadar by a ferry port in Preko. Ugljan is also called the green island because it is covered by dense bush, pine trees, olive trees, fig trees, vineyards and other Mediterranean plants. Ugljan is one of the most densely populated Croatian islands, nubering 7,583 inhabitants. The population of this island engages in farming, olive growing, fruit growing, fishing and tourism. All settlements (Preko, Ugljan, Lukoran, Sutomiš?ica,Poljana, Kali, Ošljak and Kukljica) are situated along the coast of the cultivated eastern side of the island. Beautiful sandy beaches in the area resulted in the development of tourism. In the neighboring Muline bay, 2 km away from Ugljan, is the most beautiful sandy beach on the island. The other side of the island is uninhabited and has many coves, islands and rich undersea world that challenges scuba- divers and recreational fishermen. Rocky but docile inside of the island has many paths suitable for long walks and cycling tours ... Stony and sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, different possibilities for accommodation, unique culinary experiences are some of the reasons for visiting this island. Various events are held every summer such as "The regatta", "Ugljan in flowers" (when the gardens, restaurant terraces and cultural monuments are especially decorated for the occasion), "?eprdljen night of the fishing lanterns", the "Boat parade "and the "Antiques fair". Having this in mind, Ugljan is an ideal destination for a family vacation. For those interested in cultural tuourism, Ugljan offers many testimonies of mans presence since neolithic times. In particular its north-western part which was densely populated during the Roman period and where ample ruins of ancient buildings have been found. The remains of a Roman villa are located in the Batalaža bay as well as the remains of a prehistoric hill fort on the Koran. At the northern cape of the island which guards the port there is an old Franciscan monastery with a Gothic church from the year 1447. It is also home to Califfi Castle. Set high above Preko are the ruins of Castle Štefano. Admirers of Mediterranean landscapes can enjoy in many unforgettable panoramas. One of such is the one from Venetian fort of St Michael (Sv. Mihovil XIII century). We are honored to welocome you to our island, to explore the beauties of the Croatian coast and it's culture!
