The Andalucia region

The centre is a pleasant place with many pretty plazas, absorbing historical monuments and, as you'd expect from a city with a bustling port, a wealth of seafood bars and restaurants.

Major sights in the city include the provincial museum, the Museo de Huelva, which has an excellent archaeological section. The British mining Río Tinto Company had a big impact on Huelva's 19th-century architecture, as seen in the long Muelle de Ríotinto, snaking out into the Odiel estuary, and the curious Victorian Barrio Obrero.

The most well-known church in Huelva is the Sanctuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cinta, where Columbus is said to have prayed before setting sail to the New World. The Catedral de la Merced and the Iglesia de San Pedro are among the other churches worth visiting.

A stroll around the centre will reveal those monuments that were erected in response to the explosion of wealth in Huelva, injected into the local economy from the exploitation of the mines north of the city. This peaked in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century. In 1911 the art-nouveau Conservatorio de Música was inaugurated, now the Clínica Sanz de Frutos, on Calle Rico. Just round the corner on Calle Vásquez López is the Gran Teatro, with a magnificent neo-classical façade and ornate interior. This dates from 1923, when Huelva's cultural life had a big boost from foreign capital. North of the centre is the neo-Moorish Plaza de Toros, completed in the early 20th century, whose design imitates that of Las Ventas bullring in Madrid.

Compared to other Andalucian provincial capitals like Sevilla and Granada, Huelva has little to offer in the way of lively nightlife. During the summer months, city inhabitants flock to Punta Umbría. For a list of what's on, see our Calendar for Huelva.

In Huelva, late-night bars are clustered along Calle Pablo Rada, Calle Aragón to the west of the Plaza San Pedro, which has the Box Huelva and Donington bars, the nearby Calle Ginés Martín and around Plaza de la Merced, with El Ocho bar and Saxo, a jazz bar.

Ayamonte Old Town

Ayamonte is well-positioned in the south-western corner of Huelva province. A favourite holiday spot for the for both Spanish and English, it is bustling during the summer. In the Spring and Autumn, the weather is still warm and sunny, making it a perfect place for a quiet break.

The beach area of Ayamonte is Isla Canela, and is reached by a causeway across the Marismas del Guadiana; the marismas (salt marshes) are an important wildlife reserve, providing a home to many waterfowl, including herons and flamingos. Isla Canela is built along several kilometers of sandy beaches, and provides an ideal area for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. There is an abundance of top quality golf courses in and around the area including one built into the Marismas itself.

Visit the elegant Plaza de la Laguna, for a good choice of eating places with outdoor seating. Next to the main square, the Paseo de la Ribera, is the harbour and further along is the ferry dock. In the old town is the fifteenth-century Iglesia de San Salvador, worth a visit for its memorable tower with superb views across to Portugal. There are similar good views from the tower of the sixteenth-century San Francisco church nearby.

Ayamonte is surrounded by protected areas teeming with wildlife. The Marismas del Guadiana, the marshes of the Guadiana estuary, are rich in birdlife, including herons, storks and flamingos.

“FantasticSituation”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2012

Loved our 4 night stay in Ayamonte. Such a great authentic Spanish town. Apartment was in a fantastic situation. Overlooks the Marina on one side and the front door of the apartment block leads directly onto the bustling streets. Apartment was very well equipped and provided a great base for our stay. Would definitely return!

“Ayamonte apartment”

Reviewed 14 Nov 2011

Apartment is very good, in an excellent location for the town centre, the ferry across to Portugal & the beach at Isla Canela. Enjoyed the wonderful views across the marina and to Portugal. The parking space was also a big plus, as there are few places to park without paying in the town. Availability of English channels on the TV were a big bonus, especially as the weather was not very good for part of the time. The only downside was that the patio furniture was rather flimsy, with one chair collapsing resulting in my wife falling onto the hard tiled floor. Not something I would expect from a 'luxury penthouse apartment'. If this problem was corrected we would have no hesitation in using the apartment again should we want to visit Ayamonte.

“Very good comfortable apartment in central location in interesting border town”

Reviewed 14 Nov 2011

Straightforward journey from Faro airport, met by friendly, helpful agent at the property. Underground carpark and lift very handy. Apartment very comfortable and clean with super views. Ate in quite a lot as found local restaurants either very expensive (due to the exchange rate),not always good quality, or quite ordinary. Excellent for market, shops, touring into Portugal and Seville etc.
