The Larnaka District
With Larnaca only 15 mins away, the traditional village of Alethriko is the ideal base from which to visit Larnaca, Nicosia, Limassol, Protaras and Ayia Napa and even Paphos which is now only a one and a half hour drive away along the excellent new motorway.
Larnaca boasts the traditional, finnikoudes (palm tree) harbour promenade and a large marina. There is a wealth of historical interest around the area including an array of small museums, the church of St Lazarus, the Teke Muslim shrine and flamingo filled salt lakes, Kiti Church and the mountain and monastery of Stavrovouni. And of course if it's a beach holiday you're after then this area offers miles of sandy beaches stretching from the Dhekelia tourist area with its line of 5 star hotels to the Finnikoudes, Mackenzie beach area, and not forgetting Kiti, and Pervolia with Faros Beach famous for its watersports activities.
Larnaca is home to the main airport, but also many guests use Paphos airport which is one & a quarter hours way along the new motorway. Our favourite car hire provider will arrange a car to be at either airport for you.
Larnaca, the oldest town in Cyprus was once an important trading centre from where the main export of copper was shipped, the modern city is built over the ruins of the ancient city kingdom. The town has a unique atmosphere and is a wonderful place to explore on foot as you'll constantly make new discoveries, a coffee shop, a small Church etc or take a stroll along the palm lined promenade on the picturesque seafront and linger in one of the stylish pavement cafes. Cyprus has many churches, temples and monuments belonging to both Christianity and Islam as the island is split between Turkish and Greek communities. Larnaca is no exception to this having both the magnificent Orthodox Church of Ayios Lazaros built in the town over the tomb of St Lazarus and on the banks of the salt lakes, the Hala Sultan Tekke one of the Holiest Shrines of Islam built over the tomb of Umm Haram. Outdoor activities in Larnaca and the surrounding towns and villages include water-sports, go-karting, horse riding, bowling, a Cineplex and camel park.
Ancient Kourion, Limassol - only 30 mins awayLimassol, approximately 30 kilometres away, is the second largest town in Cyprus and home of the largest port. The modern city is a bustling commercial and residential centre and the old city is where traditional architecture survives in a maze of tiny streets and alleyways spanning out from the old harbour. Limassol is flanked on both sides by the ruins of two of Cyprus' ancient city kingdoms, Amathus to the east and Kourion to the west. Visits to places of interest in and around Limassol include archaelogical sites, museums, castles, ampitheatres and markets. More modern entertainment facilities include cinemas, theatres, shopping centres, markets, a Waterpark, bowling alley and even a small ice rink. A small Golf and Country Club nestles in the hills of the picturesque village of Vikla, 25kms from Limassol. With a reputation as a hospitable place with a lively nightlife scene, Limassol is host to two of the islands largest and most famous festivals, ‘The Carnival' held in the spring and ‘The Wine Festival' held in the month of September in the municipal gardens.
Alethriko is an unspoilt village surrounded by beautiful rural scenery. Two excellent local tavernas are perfect for family dining, situated within walking distance of the villa – these offer a range of meals including typical Cypriot meze dishes. A good range of eateries is also found in Larnaca & nearby Kiti which is on the coast.
Alethriko also has a bank, a news kiosk, a mini-mart and a petrol station, as well as a bespoke jeweller in the village. The petrol station, when not fully open, has a 24 hour self-service facility using a credit card.
We would recommend the following: -
The village of Anglisides is the next village, 3 minutes from Alethriko, in the opposite direction from Larnaca. Here you will find an excellent butchers (which is open every day, including Sunday morning), a substantial bakery (open until 22.00 every day, situated opposite the butchers), two supermarkets & a fruit & veg shop ‘Fruit Land’ (next door to the Smart supermarket).
As regards larger supermarkets, there are a number in, or closer to, Larnaca. These include a new Lidl (great value), Carrefour & Orphanides.
Alethriko is a tranquil village situated in south-eastern Cyprus in a valley surrounded by pine trees, an ideal retreat for those wanting to totally relax. The village is re-known locally for it’s panoramic views of the Cyprus countryside and tranquility where only the birds break the silence.
The village centre is a short stroll away where you will find the locals in the coffee shop playing Backgammon, a supermarket, church and two local tavernas. For those who enjoy walking there are tracks leading up to the top of the hills of the valley to admire the breathtaking sea view to one side and the panoramic views over the valley on the other.
Surrounding villages of Kiti, Pervolia and Anglisides have an abundance of amenities and restaurants/tavernas to offer and the nearest beaches are only 10 minutes drive away.
The beauty of Alethriko is that whilst the village is so tranquil and idyllic, it is only a 2 minute drive to the main motorway and centrally placed on the island so anyone wanting to explore the many things Cyprus has to offer can do so with ease. Larnaca 15 mins, Larnaca Airport 15mins, Nicosia 40 mins, Limassol 25mins, Ayia Napa 45 mins, Paphos 1 hr 15 mins,Troodos Mountains 1 hr .
Activities near Alethriko
Great for: -
Rural / countryside retreats
Beaches (award winning Grosvenor Beach and McKenzie Beach, Larnaca)
A winter sun break
Good nightlife in Larnaca
Large marina at Larnaca
Family Days Out
Heritage sites at Choirokitia, Kourion (easily accessible via motorway link)
Bowling, cinema, go-karting etc available in Larnaca
There is a brand new shooting ground within 10 minutes of the villa at Klavdia
Aphrodite Hills and Secret Valley Golf courses are both about a 1 hour drive from the villa. They are easy to get to along the motorway from Alethriko and they are within 5 minutes of each other.
Aphrodite Hills is a resort course and measures between 4,528mtrs and 6,299mtrs depending on which tees you play from. There are some spectacular holes including the 7th which is a par 3 over the gorge around which the course is built.
Secret Valley is more of a members club with a very relaxed feel. The course not as tough as Aphrodite Hills but is still challenging.

"Great holiday in Cyprus"
Lovely villa in a very good location. The villa was in good condition throughout and the facilities were as described by the owner. The pool was great, just a shame it wasn't heated or had a cover. WIFI access was excellent and useful. A car is a must as the shops and restaurants are not within walking distance. Our only real gripe was the stinky drains. The property manager did attempt to sort the problem but to no avail. Apparently, this is a common problem in the area.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our villa. Having just returned ourselves from a relaxing 9 days at the villa, it appears that the drains issue was related to an ineffective filter which has now been replaced. Whilst the pool is now up to a nice temperature, the early season was colder than normal at night. A pool cover is something that we will explore though. We look forward to you visiting our Cypriot 'home from home' again in the future. Best wishes Sarah & Phill
