“A good villa in beautiful surroundings” Villa Kannoni is a lovely house in a very picturesque location. The views of the White Mountains and the sea, in particular from the first floor bedroom balconies, are spectacular. The pool is lovely and a good size and there is loads of room around the pool to relax and take in the sun. The air-con in the bedrooms works really well but there isn't an air-con unit in the main living area. Most days this was not a problem as there are usually lovely breezes around the villa, but occasionally it was a but stuffy in the evenings. We had one or two problems during our stay but the owner, Nick, was available by phone and endeavoured to sort the issues as quickly as possible.
The villa is well placed to reach places to eat but you will need a car as even the small village of Kokkino Chorio, which has a decent little supermarket, is about a mile away and is quite a slog on foot in the heat (well, for me anyway!). The village of Plaka and the coastal resorts of Almyrida and Kalyves have plenty of place to eat and a range of shops.
The large, and historic, town of Chania is around 45 minutes away and is well worth a visit. The harbour area is beautiful with a mix of Venetian and Ottoman-era architecture with charming, winding back streets - a great place to spend a few hours. You can also take several boat trips from the harbour area.
Further afield, the beach at Elefanosi is one of the most beautiful we have ever visited. It's a 2 hour drive way but the journey through the mountains is wonderful. You should get there as early as you can, though, as it (and the car park there) get very busy.
It was our first visit to Crete and I certainly think we'll be back on the strength of this holiday.
