The Valenciana region
The city is wonderful and offers so much to see and do. What first strikes you is the relaxed atmosphere of the people, compared with the hustle and bustle of Madrid. Valencians seem to make the most out of every second of the day, perhaps this is a side-effect from living so close to the beach, or generally the Spanish way of life, but I feel this laidback lifestyle is particularly special in Valencia as the city and people pull off an elegance and refinement unlike any other urban seaside destination.
There is a huge mix of styles and designs, a surprise around every corner ranging from the medieval buildings of the centre and the Baroque mansions and palaces around Gran Via to the modernist train station and markets and, of course, the stunning avant-garde structures of the City of Arts and Sciences and the America’s Cup Pavilion.
Obviously the warm climate and sea breeze is a lovely change to a standard British summer! It is a treat to spend the weekend on Malvarrosa beach soaking up the holiday atmosphere, as well as a few rays!
Xativa is a beautiful, lively town of approx 30,000 inhabitants, the old capital of the Valencia Region. We had never heard of the town until my sister came to live here, she originally intended to make her home in Denia, but was persuaded to have a look further inland and discovered this hidden gem, we came out for a visit and immediately fell in love with the place.
The Town, originally Roman, was founded because of it’s unlimited supply of fresh water which is provided by natural springs, you will often see people filling their water bottles from one of the many fountains. The historic old town is fascinating, particularly the castle ruins which is serviced by an excellent tour. From the beautiful Basilica houses to some of the effigies that are paraded through the town on Good Friday, something not to be missed. At Christmas the tree and Nativity Garden stand for the 12 days and are never vandalised, something that would be a miracle in the U.K, the festivities conclude on the 6th Jan with the festival of the Three Kings, a lovely festival for the children. Then, in March is the Spectacular Fire Festival, when the most incredible paper mache effigies are built and then burnt, all this in the middle of a busy town.
On summer evenings the atmosphere is one of family and community, people of all ages out until very late enjoying life, certainly the older residents of Xativa are not worried about strolling around the town at midnight.
The surrounding countryside is very green, the mountains offer a a breathtaking backdrop to the orange and olive groves which are abundant here. There are lovely walks through quiet areas and rivers full of fish. Birdlife is varied and some are very pretty, a visiting friend, counted 22 different species in one morning while sitting in our garden. All this and only 30 mins drive from the sea. I could go on about the place forever, but don’t take my word for it, come and see for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

"Well managed, well stocked and well located Villa"
Our two families enjoyed a fantastic fortnight at this well-appointed villa. That pool is as nice as it looks in the photos and was perfect for the kids (11 & 9). Xativa came to life during the Fira d’Agost when we stayed, has plenty of amenities and is well-positioned for exploring. Resorts with good beaches/restaurants and mostly Spanish visitors, a decent water park and Valencia (recommend Metro Park & Ride) are all about 45 mins drive. The likes of Les Rotes nr Denia (good snorkelling) and Altea are also in range should you wish to venture down the Costa Blanca. Communications from Alex were excellent. Both he, plus Annette in Spain were very helpful and friendly. We would thoroughly recommend Casa Alexandra.

"Dream Holiday Villa and surroundings"
6 of us spent an idyllic holiday in this lovely villa and beautiful surroundings. The interior was very comfortable. A very nice dining area and a well equipped kitchen. The bathrooms consist of walk-in-showers, toilet and wash basin. Water pressure was excellent. Outside the most wonderful pool and area. Pool was great for swimming or just to laze in and have fun. Also a gas bar-b-cue which was very good. I in particular liked the garden - so spacious and so very green. Plenty of trees where you could just take a chair and book and be completely on your own. There are some lovely walks outside the villa and one that leads to crossing the river with a real family run spanish bar for drinks and lightly cooked snacks or just take your own!!! This is out in the open under the trees. The town of Xativa is very interesting - plenty of restaurants and coffee shops and also night clubs. And always felt very safe at night - very family orientated town. We all had a great holiday and would go to the villa again and would recommend to friends. And of course the weather was absolutely wonderful!!!!
