Home description
You will be warmly welcomed at 'La Maison Rose', situated in a small village just north of the spectacular Pyrénéan mountain chain, just south of the Madiran and St Mont vineyards, and a day trip out to the Atlantic beaches or Spain.
This attractive house easily sleeps from 6 to 10, (please ask for tariffs for parties over 6) but its layout is such that a couple would not feel it too big as it is a 'house of two halves', with two staircases to the first floor either end of the house, the upstairs being divided in effect by one of the bathrooms. It is set in lovely gardens, with lots of shade trees, a 10m x 5m pool with roman steps and removable security cover, a barbecue area, and a large space for ball games, plus a huge trampoline and other outdoor games to entertain you.
It is close to the top ski resorts in the French Pyrénées, La Mongie/Tourmalet, and in an area abounding with great shopping, restaurants, wine tastings - try the Madiran, with its health giving qualities, or the St Mont as a lighter table wine - come and enjoy!

The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region
Relatively undiscovered and unspoilt, the Hautes Pyrenees nestles between the Pyrenees Atlantic, the Gers and the Haute Garonne. It is a beautiful area of intensely varied landscapes, the magnificent and stunning peaks of the Pyrenean mountain chain, through the plain that surrounds Tarbes, to the gently rolling hills of the Madiran and St Mont vineyards to the north of the region.
On the same latitude as the Cote d'Azur, yet the effect of the mountains smooths out the extremes in temperature, leaving the countryside soft and verdant throughout the year.
An hour and a half finds you on the Atlantic beaches of Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, Hossegor - take in a little light surfing? Less than an hour and you can be in the mountains, on the premier ski slopes in the French Pyrenees, or trekking, or white water rafting, or, a bit further afield, hiring a horse or a donkey to discover the fantastic natural amphitheatre of 'la cirque de Gavarnie'....
Visit the historic pilgrimage town of Lourdes, and the shrine to St Bernadette, or experience a luxurious spa at the lovely town of Bagneres de Bigorre in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
For the children, take in parc Walibi at Agen - scary rides without the queues of the bigger theme parks and a shaded picnic area, or the parc animalier des Pyrenees where they can stroke the marmottes, or the aquarium at Lourdes, where they can have their fingers nibbled by carp....
Villenave pres Marsac area
Make the most of Gastronomic Gascony - the range of culinary delights is as varied as the landscape! Try the local soup, Garbure - truly excellent - and Pyrenean cheeses that match up to the best Cheddar, duck in all its forms, free range veal, all the supermarkets and markets boast a mouthwatering and enormous array of fish and seafood and beautiful fresh vegetables...
A list of local recommended restaurants awaits you at la Maison Rose, ranging from 11 euros for four courses and as much wine as you can drink (how do they do it?), through medium priced to superb restaurants producing food you would find hard to better in a top London restaurant.
Lovely farmers markets abound in the area, and are well worth visiting; there is at least one for every day of the week, the largest - and certainly one of the best your author has ever come across - is in Tarbes on Thursdays - buy cheese from the man on his pedestal in the centre - the one with the huge queue!
From mid spring through until mid autumn festivals, fetes, night markets, flea markets and top quality car boot sales are on absolutely everywhere. The most famous music festivals are the Jazz festival at Marciac at the end of July, and the Country festival at Vic Fesensac, but there is always something going on.
Other festivals include medieval (jousting, jugglers, stilt walkers, fire eaters), food, and local artists..... so something for everyone!
Closer to home, there are public tennis courts at Chis, and riding stables on almost every corner - we can recommend a superb one in the hills just north of la Maison Rose! The national stud ('Haras Nationale' is in Tarbes, and puts on spectacles in the summer months - well worth a visit - and a bit further afield a trip in a cable car to the observatory on the summit of the Pic du Midi is a fantastic experience!
Other festivals include medieval fetes (jousting, jugglers, stiltwalkers and fire eaters); art and crafts

Quietly peruse brochures in the cane seating in the library.
The full size table tennis table is in the huge games room, which also has a lovely peaceful seating area in front of double french windows opening on to the rear garden....
The bedrooms are all large, light and airy, and furnished simply and tastefully for your comfort.
Further details outdoors: The gardens are completely enclosed, and surround the house on three sides, to the south, the west and the north.
The pool area is to the south, and is mainly enclosed by a flint wall. The pool cover is completely removable if so wished, but we normally just lift one side for additional privacy. The paved terrace around the pool is the perfect place to lie and read a book....
Adjacent to the pool area a raised wooden deck serves as a summer eating area, and is mercifully shaded by mature trees. A second fridge freezer is conveniently situated nearby for drinks and cheese!
A shaded path leads to the rest of the gardens, which include a vast lawn are which backs on to fields, and is the perfect place for children to enjoy the huge trampoline, and play football or badminton...
