The Dalmatia region
Unspoiled islands, beautiful beaches, old historical towns and fishing ports, Roman ruins and medieval and Renaissance architecture make Central Dalmatia the ideal region to combine hedonism with historical discovery.
Its mild climate, with 2700 sunny hours per year, makes it an oasis, where one can enjoy swimming in the sea from the beginning of May right up until mid of October. As nowhere else in the Mediterranean, there is rugged coastline with hundreds of islands (Brac, Hvar, Vis, Solta ...), peaceful bays, picturesque beaches and rocky reefs. And the fact that here are four National parks (Krka Waterfalls, Kornati Archipelago, Paklenica and Mljet) and five Nature reserves only underlines the beauty of Dalmatia.
Split, the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic coast, is located in the heart of Dalmatia. The old core of the city is protected by UNESCO as a part of «world heritage», and Diocletian's Palace is one of the most imposing Roman ruins in existence. Along coast there are many old beautiful towns (Zadar, Šibenik, Primošten, Trogir, Kaštela, Solin, Omiš), which offer to its visitors a wealth of cultural and historical content, as well as the touch of the Mediterranean atmosphere.
Trogir ( formerly Trau) is a jewel of a walled town with a wide waterfront promenade and the maze of medieval streets, The profusion of Romanesque and Renaissance style within 15th century city walls, as well as the magnificent cathedral of St. Lawrence (St, Lovro), inspired UNESCO to name the town a World Heritage site.
Being located in the middle of the eastern Adriatic coast, it is well connected with the rest of Croatia and Europe. Split international airport is only five kilometres away from the city, and Trogir has a direct connection to the A1 highway. The ferry port is located in Split (30 km from Trogir) and effectively connects the mainland to the islands.
The medieval streets, inside the shady courtyards of the old palaces hide many charming restaurants that offer the typical Mediterranean dishes and seafood menus. The most popular place in town is the seafront promenade, on the southern side of the island being at the same time a port for luxury yachts as well as a place of socializing and meeting on many open terraces of small cafes and restaurants.
Another attractive location in the town is the main square in front of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, with the old city hall.
Things to see :
- Cathedral of St. Lovro with its Romanesque portal of Master Radovan and richly decorated Renaissance Chapel of St.Ivan.
You can even climb 47 m cathedral tower for a delightful view.
- Monastery of St. Nicholas where you can find relief of Kairos, the Greek god of happy moment, from 3rd century BC
- Town hall with a Gothic yard, Cipiko palace with its stunning triforium, Kamerlengo fortress
- Visit some of classical and folk concerts presented in churches and open squares as a part of Trogir summer music
