The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region
Le Lubéron is composed of three mountain ranges: (from west to east) the Little Luberon, the Big Luberon and the Oriental Luberon, lying in the middle of Provence in the far south of France. The valley between them contains a number of towns and villages as well as agricultural land. The total number of inhabitants varies greatly between winter and summer, due to a massive influx of tourists during the warm season.
It is a favourite destination for French high society and British and American visitors because of the pleasant and picturesque towns and villages, comfortable way of life, agricultural wealth, historical and cultural associations (e.g. Samuel Beckett lived in Roussillon during World War II), and hiking trails.
In the 1970s, people came from all over France to "Le Luberon" in search of a communitarian ideal.
In the last two decades the Luberon has become known in the English-speaking world especially through a series of books by British author Peter Mayle chronicling his life as an expatriate settled in the Luberon village of Ménerbes. One of Mayle's books was made into a film A Good Year (2006) directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe and filmed in the region.

What a great villa. We turned up and were met by the owners extended family. Very thorough in making sure we new what and where everything was. Villa was excellent with large rooms, high ceilings with lovely wooden beams. Outside there was plenty of space which included the pool. The village which is like 5 mins away had small shops eg Chemist etc. Lovely picturesque views. Highly recommend. We would definitley book again. |

We stayed at Les Moulins for 2 weeks in August 2011. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we just had a fantastic time. The villa itself is beautiful. Honestly the photgraphs do a reasonable job showing it off, but it's just so much better when you see it for real. Two great bedrooms for the adults (downstairs) - very well presented with good facilities, space for clothes and generous bathrooms. Two futher rooms upstairs for the children. All with air conditioning too - a must in August. The large open family siitng room come kitched is a fantastic space too. Really works well if you (like us) were 8 people. Outside there are two lovely dining areas, a fantastic pool, a table tennis table (which got lots of use) and a pool room. Handy for storing all the toys, and popping in to have a shower. It also has a refridgerator, handy we you are all outside. But don't just limit your stay to the villa. Complete with 5 mountain bikes, and set in prime cycling country (an old mountain stage of the Tour de France used to go through here), you have to go and explore. It will certainly keep you fit with lots of challenging uphill climbs. But the views from 600M up are spectacular! The pretty litte village of St Sarturnin Les Apt is a 5 minute walk down from the villa, past the "Moulin" (windmill), ideal for local shopping (fresh baguettes every morning). A ten minute drive takes you down to Apt itself, which is where you want to head to for the big supermarket shop. And then you must go and visit the nearby villages. Most notable are Rousillon, Bonnieux and Gordes, the last one being set on the side of a huge hill with an old castle in the middle of the town, high up, looking over more wonderful scenery. All in all, you will fall in love with the place. If like us you love France, this will not disappoint. There is so much to see and do around, but if you would rather just relax and do very little, you always have this fantastic villa you call your "home" to come back to. Will definitely be going back again. |
