The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region

Situated in the western corner of the Haute Vienne region of the Limousin, 5 minutes from the Charente and Dordogne departments, we are ideally situated to explore the sights and sounds of all 3 areas.
Discover the magnificent Châteaux on the Richard the Lionheart route. There are 16 in total from the magical castle at Montbron, to the majestic hilltop chateau at Rochechouart.
Limoges, the porcelain capital of France, is only 45 minutes away. The beautiful cities of Périgueux and Angoulême are also under an hour away. Brantôme, 40 minutes south, is known as the Venice of the Périgord being surrounded on all sides by water with a magnificent centrepiece abbey overlooking the weir on the river Dronne. Unlock the sights, sounds and tastes of the local markets, the largest being the market at Piégut, only 15 minutes away by car.
The St Mathieu area
The village of St Mathieu is home to a picturesque leisure lake, which provides a sandy beach with supervised swimming, fishing, sailing and pedalo hire in peak summer with plenty of opportunity and space to enjoy a picnic in the shade of the trees. There is also a restaurant / bar at the lake for drinks, snacks and meals. There are several other amenity lakes within a half-hour drive of L’Hirondelle each offering their own ambience and opportunities for great family days out.
St. Mathieu has all everyday amenities including a well-stocked supermarket, bank, post office, cash machines, 2 bakers, a newsagent/tobacconist, 2 hairdressers, a health & beauty salon and a petrol station. The village plays host to lively evening markets throughout the summer where you can purchase local produce and have it cooked for you on the barbecue. Drinks and entertainment are also available to ensure a fantastic al-fresco experience.
Buzzards and kites are often seen circling overhead, whilst blue tits, wrens, black redstarts, great tits, goldfinches, robins, blackbirds, thrushes, dunnocks and of course swallows are regular visitors. You may also catch a glimpse of less common birds, for example hoopoes and hen harriers. Deer can occasionally be spotted at the margin of the woods and visitors have also spotted foxes and wild boar!
For the more energetic we can guide you to the many activities available in the area such as horse riding, fishing, cycling, kart racing, swimming, golf and sailing. For walkers there are a great many 'Randonnées' (marked walks) two of which pass within 400 metres of L'Hirondelle.
The historic town of Rochechouart with its medieval chateau is just a 20 minute drive away. The town has several good restaurants and bars.

We stayed at L'Hirondelle in september 2011. Gail and Chris made us feel very welcome and we had a drink in their beautiful garden. The gite is very comfortable and has everything for a relaxing vacation. We did't know this region and it turned out to be a real discovery! Wonderfull nature and close by mayor cities as Limoges and Angoulême. We will come back! |

We were made very welcome on our arrival at L'Hirondelle. The accommodation was very well appointed and clean and everything the website described. It was only 2kilometres from the village where you could find everything you needed. The weather we had just made the whole holiday perfect, so we could enjoy the wonderful countryside. |

We stayed here in April with 2 families each with 2 children, the location is good for short day trips to Limoges and Bordueax as well as surrounding areas such as Brantome and Pie-gut. The Gite is spotless and well presented with 4 bedrooms each having its on ensuite which is very handy for large family groups. Downstairs was a large kitchen and dining area which leads onto an outdoor patio if you want to eat outside. There is a large sitting area with TV ect and a shared laundry from memory. All the rooms are upstairs and the stairway is on the steep side so it would not be suited to very old people who may have difficulty walking up stairs. The hosts were wonderful and will cook a wonderful meal for you should you not wish to cook and they were very helpful even offering us a replacement mobile phone when mine died on the holiday! In the nearby town you will find a full size supermarket, petrol station, car wash, chemist and some other restaurants however there are also many other towns scattered around. The area is rural and quiet and is a good base for exploring the nearby area. Chris and Gail have a lovely Gite and spotless we would love to visit again if we get the chance. |
