The Tuscany region

Tuscany, led by Florence, is famous as the land that inspired the Renaissance. No other small area has produced so many geniuses; we just have to think of Leonard da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante, Machiavelli, the Medici, Giotto and many, many others. This house, being close to so many towns of historic and artistic interest associated with that golden period, enables guests to enjoy these marvels to the maximum; Florence is close, as are, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa, Vinci and many undiscovere jewels, such as Pistoia herself. But then Tuscany offers many other things including sports opportunities, excellent restaurants, spas and designer shops to satisfy almost all tastes, interests and wallets. Perhaps most importantly, it is an area where nothing is hurried and where visitors can simply relax in its remarkable olive tree covered landscape and kind climate.... this is 'Liberty Hall'.

Serravalle Pistoiese

Pistoia (7 kms away) is a peaceful provincial capital surrounded by orchards and nursery gardens which, together with metalworking (the ‘pistol’ is named after the town), are the basis of its economy. Older than Florence, Pistoia has a long history associated with Roman times and her struggle against and eventual domination by the Medici of Florence. The surrounding area is mountainous with lower slopes covered with olive groves and vineyards and higher parts by forest. Pistoia boasts a classic Tuscan historic centre with important works of art and architecture, as well a particularly traditional food market. But these are yet to be discovered by many tourists and it is still possible to walk around the centre as the only outsider. Though generally tranquil, Pistoia goes wild in July when the internationally famous ‘Pistoia Blues’ concerts and the medieval ‘Giostra del Orso’ jousting tournament are held. There are many restaurants and prices are generally reasonable.

Pistoia is an excellent base from which to launch for a wide range of activities. I will just mention a few ideas for children:

• The more exciting cultural visits: Leaning Tower of Pisa (1 hour), drive on top of Lucca Walls (40 mins), Florence (45 mins) climb the Duomo - see the Ponte Vecchio - see the collection of armour in the Stibbert Museum, San Gimignano with its amazing medieval; towers (1 1/2 hrs). The Castle at Vinci with its working models of Leonardo's inventions is only 30 mins away.

• Visit Pistoia Zoo (20 mins) - world class and the best in Italy.

• Visit Collodi Villa, where Pinocchio was written - there is a park there or small children.Visit the

• Pistoia Mountains - cable car to the top, suspension bridges, etc

• Visit a Winery (20 mins)

• Visit the famous marble mines at Carrara (! 1/2 hours)

• Beaches - about 1 hour away (Forte Dei Marmi, etc)

Casalguidi is about 2 kilometers away and boats a couple of small supermarkets, a variety of simple shops and several Restaurants (and take aways). It has a fine square and a market on Fridays. Casalguidi is well known for embroidery.

Most people who stay with us tend to mix outings with a great deal of relaxation by the pool; it is an ideal place to conduct a visit in the morning, lunch and spend the afternoon around the pool and occasionally go out to a good restaurant in the evening; babysitting can usually be arranged if you want a break!

"Cannot remember feeling so relaxed - a real gem"

I almost did not want to write this review and leave this holiday home as a 'best kept secret' for family and friends but it would not be fair to the house itself, its location or its friendly owner and support staff. The house is a gem - a farmhouse converted to a very good standard, with good sized bedrooms and sitting rooms, yet without losing that homely 'nook and cranny' feel. Even a large family will never feel cramped. There is even an ex cow byre with table tennis table. The kitchen is well-equipped with two fridge/freezers and plenty of plates, dishes for large parties. Outside on the terrace are two separate long tables under vine trellises (great for long Italian lunches) and then, on the next level down a large swimming pool and enough recliners to satisfy every member of a large family (and well fenced too, for younger members). With the house set on the side of a valley the views are wonderful, More importantly, the whole atmosphere is one of silence and tranquillity - yet only two kilometres away there is a small village with a very adequate supermarket and restaurants. Seven kilometres and you find the autostrada, which gives you easy and swift access to Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena, and then the rest of Italy. (A car is advisable if you want to see the sights but if you just want to walk or simply do nothing then the location is equally attractive.). Mention must be made, too, of owner Mark and the support of Christina and Salvina (who will prepare home cooked meals for you if you wish). Their warmth, friendliness and concern for our well-being (including a well stocked welcome pack) really set the tone of the holiday. And do buy some of Mark's olive oil from his own trees - the highest level quality and less than one-third the price of the equivalent in the UK. Needless to say, we aim to return!
