Home description
Built in 1731 by D. Diogo de Sousa Vice-Roy of Portuguese India. If you’re seeking charm, comfort and tranquillity, this is the place for you!.. Solar de Vilela is surrounded by agricultural fields and forest and has an enviable situation because of its tranquillity and privacy in a region where the houses are mostly close together The magnificence of the architecture will not let you perceive the comfort of the interior nor the cosy atmosphere of welcome given by the owner. The warm colours and the wood work, the well planned lighting and small details in a very modern approach make us feel very well in this house. The meticulous restoration has been a true labour of love for the owners, to whom Solar de Vilela, has been home for generations. The numerous living areas that spread throughout the spacious interior will delight large groups and sharing families. The very well equipped kitchen has a bright and attractive breakfast room, the adjacent formal dining room conveys an air of splendor, with its high ceilings. Throughout, original features, are tastefully combined with modern conveniences to create a comfortable and immaculate interior. Pretty armchairs sit atop wooden, and tiled floors, in the light sitting rooms; modern bathrooms display borders of attractive hand painted tiles, and beautiful furniture decorate the 9 spacious bedrooms. On the ground level the original stone wine cellar has been tastefully converted into three comfortable, spacious adjacent drawing rooms, one of them a games room with a snooker table and cards tables. Outside in the spacious grounds, the swimming pool and garden, sit amidst well kept lawns and terraces, and an ornate chapel adjoins the house. You may have daily help and meals by request (with an extra charge) if you arrange it with the Key holder.
The property is well placed for visits to a number of historic centres, like the ancient town of Guimarães with its castle which is a mere 15 minutes away, whilst the bustling city of Porto lies only 35 km away. Here you can explore the twisting and narrow streets of the Ribeira quarter, famous for its life and character, numerous monuments, or visit one of the many port wine lodges on the bank of Douro river. And why not take a boat cruise? You might prefer Vila do Conde beaches, only 25 km away, or Caldas da Saúde with its thermal waters only 10 km.

The Costa Verde region
In the north-western part of the country lies this land of dense vegetation and profound historic wealth. It was here that Portugal's first king, Dom Afonso Henriques, was born in the beginning of the 12th century, having then extended the kingdom to the south, in what was considered as one of the most heroic feats of the Christian Reconquest. The inheritance of a distant past is seen everywhere. Enjoy the aristocratic tradition of hospitality. Along with this unreproachable art one may enjoy an abundant gastronomy, light, acidulous wines (vinhos verdes) and rich wines, and a variety of handicrafts that mingles the shine of` the filigree with the colour of the local embroideries. The country's longest motorway (A1, from Lisbon to Oporto) goes up to Braga (A3), in the heart of Costa Verde. If you follow the coastline on the road from Vila do Conde to Valença, you will not miss the beautiful beaches, seaside resorts and enchanting villages such as Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira. Inland and worthwhile visiting is the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Throughout the region the rivers, waterfalls, vineyards and fertile plots combine with the ancestral monuments in urban centres. The bustling city of Porto, lies only 35 km away and his the capital of the country's northern regions, with its international airport, offers the delights of a riverside city as it is magnificently situated on the mouth of the Douro river, from where boats leave to sail up the beautiful river. Seaside Viana do Castelo, ecclesiastic Braga, and medieval Guimarães are but a few other examples of a happy alliance between popular heritage and cosmopolitan elegance.
Santo Tirso area
Santo Tirso is composed of 24 parishes and holds a vast cultural heritage. A visit to the monasteries; of Roriz, Singeverga (where the liqueur with the same name is made), Santa Escolástica (hand-made biscuits) and Vilarinho will show historic marks, which register its primordial occupation. If you love green spaces, you should visit and enjoy the urban park “Parque Urbano da Rabada”, the hill “Monte de Nª Srª da Assunção” and the oak grove “Carvalhal de Valinhas”. Visiting the city, the tourist should begin at the ancient Monastery of S. Bento, follow to the Municipal Museum Abade Pedrosa, which has a magnificent archaeological collection. Further up, in the D. Maria II Park, you can delight with the beautiful view over the river Ave. In the city gardens, the sculptures that compose the International Museum of Cotemporary Sculpture are notorious. After the visit don’t forget to stop and relish with our gastronomy and delight yourself with the renowned pastries “jesuítas” and “limonetes”(sweet regional pastry). Caldas da Saúde Spa Station The first references to the mineral waters of Caldas da Saúde date back to the 10th century. However, the first thermal centre worth the name was only built in 1891 and improved in 1905. In 1915, the spa complex was refurbished and a thermal hotel was built. The construction works revealed Roman objects, proving that the thermal waters were already known and used at that time. In 1987, the degradation of the spa station was complete, forcing its closing. It was totally rebuilt and reopened in 1994. Therapeutical indications: respiratory, rhumatic and muscle and bones illnesses.
