The Barlavento Islands / Sal Island region
Year round sunshine in the Cape Verde Islands. Less than 6 hours direct flight from the UK. Ex Portuguese colony, now independent and dependent on tourism. The reason Sal has grown as a tourist destination over the years is its wonderful sandy beaches, dry climate, warm temperatures, and friendly people. For a laid-back holiday, where you can relax, this is the place. Only 10 minutes transfer time from airport to the villa.
For weather information current and historic please visit this web site. http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/08594.html
Floating off the west coast of Africa, ten barefoot and very different island paradises wait to whip your breath away. Each one is dramatically different, from bounty-like blonde sands backed by jungle-like scenery to volcanic monochrome landscapes peppered with pastel-painted towns. Yes, the beaches are mind-bogglingly gorgeous. And the colourful blend of cultures from Africa, Portugal and Brazil will have you charmed from the moment you arrive.
Cape Verde’s bounty-like beaches instantly grab your attention. Miles of utterly breathtaking porcelain-white sands stretch as far as the eye can see, seductively sliding into glass-like seas. Santa Maria’s unspoilt seashore curves around the coastline for over 7km, so whether you want to stay close to the action near the water sports centres and beach bars or crave the solitude of the sand dunes, you can always find your own piece of paradise. Stroll along the sands and spot the island of Boavista on the horizon. Reel in a Blue Marlin or Yellowfin Tuna. Learn to windsurf across the waves. Or simply sit under the shade of a raffia-style parasol and watch an energetic game of volleyball. However you choose to unwind here - it's most definitely a desert island dream.
The people are a mixture of African and European with approximately 70% of the population being of mixed race. The official language of the islands is Portuguese, which widely spoken and used in newspapers and anything that is written. Instead they use Creole, their national language, based on African languages but with additions from several European languages. Even this can differ from island to island. More recently English has been taught as a foreign language in schools. The religion of the islands is largely Christian, with most people being Catholic.
Idyllic year round temperatures in the high twenties and virtually no rain makes the Islands the ideal getaway whatever the time of year. Their privileged position in the Atlantic means they enjoy fairly constant cooling breezes which keep the atmosphere almost free from humidity. Rainfall is minimal throughout the year and is most likely to occur during the months of July and October.
Santa Maria, Sal Island / Antonio Souza Beach area
Lie on the beach all day and relax. The flat is on this beach about 500m away. http://www.caboverde24.com/surfwebcam/
Visit the turtle nests/ beaches and special nursery (June-Nov) http://www.turtlesos.org/
Go fishing from the shore, or by boat. Go diving from many dive schools, the best i have found is this one.. they are all great, safe and with good equipment, They taught both my young daughters to dive. http://www.mantadivingcentre.cv/en/homepage.htm
Take a day out in a sailing boat Go quad biking or explore the island in dune bugies, a lot of fun! Visit other islands on day trips in a light plane Walk along the coast Snorkel from little coves Go surfing, kite surfing or wind surfing Dine at the water's edge in local restaurants Enjoy fresh fish and seafood Have a great evening with the very friendly ex-pats in Tam Tam Bar. Sit outside at night and watch the amazing stars Visit Santa Maria, Espargos, Burracona, Pedra de Lume volcanic crater, the port of Palmeira.
Sal really appeals to ocean lovers who enjoy the simple things in life. Some things are very European and similar to the Cannary Islands, other areas are significantly more basic, very unspoilt and beautiful.
