"Luxury apartment in Sal"
This apartment has a lot of comfort, with a swimming pool and a shuttle to bring you to town or to the beach. Nice place and nice island

"Wonderful holiday - you'll want to keep going back"
From the start, we had a warm fuzzy feeling that this wasn't going to be an 'arm's length' affair. Jeanette (the apartment owner) always came back promptly with answers to any queries, so we were confident that things would go smoothly. This confidence was justified, with Jeanette sorting a minor airport transfer hiccup instantly and efficiently. So it was that we arrived at the apartment with no delay and already feeling the UK-induced stress disappearing like surf soaking into the sand.
First impression of Vila Verde - BIG! - well spread out and more like a village than a complex of apartments. Our bags were trundled by the ever-present and happy staff to an upgraded apartment which was extremely well appointed and furnished. Everything needed was there, air conditioning in all the rooms (but we didn't need it because the steady 10 - 15mph breeze kept the rooms nicely aired anyway). The Apt. was spotless and was cleaned daily and the beds made up by another smiley maid.
We didn't take advantage of the excursions, onsite restaurant or entertainment team, preferring to self-cater or stroll / taxi into Santa Maria for our meals. However, it's all there if you need it and the restaurant seemed to be popular at meal times. The little mid-site supermarket is like a basic Spar etc. and has fruit and veg, sauces and pasta, spreads and beer, sausage and cheese. Also - get up early! - there's fresh bread and croissants from 8am to about 9.30am at very good prices.
I was there for some kitesurfing tuition, and we went to Santa Maria at least once each day. It's definitely worth buying a €5 (per person, per week) bus pass, so you can use the Vila bus to & from Santa Maria. It makes 4 or 5 trips a day and it's not hard to arrange your visits around the bus schedule.
We tried a number of bars, strictly in the interests of research of course, and they all offer good food at very reasonable prices and with a good vibe. After the initial research, we 'adopted' the Malulelé and had most of our evening meals there. See here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3N9KJMIzIU It's run by a friendly/family team of 4 plus chef, who do a killer grilled Tuna and Garropa (Grouper?) and you can't visit without downing at least a couple of Caiparinha cocktails: refreshing, moreish and maybe worth having a third for luck. The Estrela beer is surprisingly good too, if you need something to dilute the seawater taken on board after kitesmurfing (as opposed to kitesurfing)
In summary: Worth doing again? Definitely!

Arrived in Sal Island Cape Verde not knowing what to expect. The place looks a bit baren upon arrival but when you get to Santa Maria resort and Villa Verde it is a gorgeous place very much like being in the Caribean. The accommodation was stunning, very spacious with excellent air conditioning and facilities. This is best apartment I have ever stayed in, decorated to a high standard with a lovely swimming pool and a pool bar that has just opened playing regae music to help you relax! Santa Maria is very chilled and the Cape Verdian way of life suited me "no stress" being their moto! It is only 3 euros taxi drive into Santa Maria or there is a shuttle bus that goes every 2 hours that cost 5 euros for the whole week. The beaches are gorgeous white sands and crystal blue sea - the island is quite windy though and the sea is often very choppy but the breeze keeps you cool in the hot sunshine. The people are very friendly and the pace of life very slow. You can see the fish being brought in from the harbour (knowing this may be what you end up being served that night). There are an abundance of restaurants and bars catering for all tastes, many of the restaurants are on the beach and serve the local fish of the day. We are two single girls and were slightly apprehensive about safety and whether there would be enough night life but we were pleasantly surprised that we felt completely safe and that there was such a wide choice of venues to eat and drink but also the live music bars that got everyone in the party mood and were a nice change from the usual UK bars that just play the same music. The best bar by far was Ocean Cafe that did excellent mojitos and had excellent music each night. We went on a catamaran trip that was organised from the beach (look out for a guy called Neilton who was very helpful and booked our trip for us). The trip was great fun although we didnt see any wildlife (you can see dolphins and turtles at certain times of the year). The crew were really good fun, playing music and involving everyone in the singing, with a few cool beers and then a dip in the sea when we stopped at a cove for a break. This made an excellent end to what I can only describe as a perfect holiday. Highly recommended.
