The Barlavento Islands / Boa Vista Island region
Boavista is an island of sand dunes, long white beaches, and clear sea. Originally named Sao Cristovao when discovered in 1480, the name Boa Vista caught on after sailors cried from the crow's nest of sailing barques “Boa Vista” (meaning Beautiful View). Settled in 1620, by Captain Rodrigo Afonso who obtained a permit for farming cattle and goats, it also developed potteries and weaving.
Boavista has a dry-tropical climate. Humidity is low. The average daily temperature ranges from 22°C to 26°C. Highs of 29°C are seen in July/August with lows of 20°C in December/January. Ocean surface water temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C, creating a maritime temperate climate.
There are two seasons, a dry season between November and July, and a "wet" season, with some (very rare!) rain between August and October. Daily hours of sunshine vary from around 6 - 7 between August and October and 10 - 12 for the rest of the year
The Sal Rei area
Turtle Watching - Every year, from late May to September, more than 3,000 loggerhead turtles (Caretta) come ashore on Cape Verde´s beaches, particularly at Ervatao beach, the third most important loggerhead nesting site in the world.
Whale Watching - organised half day tours are available to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Estoril Beach is situated just South of Sal Rei and is sheltered by the Ilheu de Sal Rei making it the calmest on the Island and ideal for families and the novice at surfing, diving and watersports. There are a number of beach bars as well as the submarine diving centre and the Boa Vista Wind Club where you can obtain expert instruction in diving and wind-surfing.
Sal Rei has over 20 restaurants to choose from with both local and european cuisine.
Other activities include: kite-surfing, horse riding, cycle hire, beach buggy hire, 4x4 hire, guided tours of the island, walking, Ultra Marathon

Casa Velha Penthouse exceeded our expectations in every way. Well equipped, clean, and a superb location. Friendly helpful staff. Great advice beforehand from owners re. currency, etc. It is a perfect location. Close to local facilities for shopping, eating out, etc., and adjacent to the most beautiful beach. Also very short transfer from airport, so no wasted time in transit. The whole experience was magical, and one we definitely hope to repeat. |

The Penthouse apartment is beautiful, we really felt we had escaped from life, great location, short walk to anywhere but out the way enough for it to be peaceful. The view from the bed is beautiful and on the roof terrace we felt like royalty! Amazing large space to chill out all to yourselves and watch the sunset. The beaches around the island are really spectacular and empty!!! Really do recommend hiring a 4x4 and getting off the beaten track. The apartment is also full of lots of information that was really useful for us to make the best of our time there. |

We had a lovely stay, the apartment has everything you could want (apart from maybe air conditioning in the bedroom! - it can get very hot!) Clean and tidy and very spacious. The kitchen was well equiped and the bedroom had plenty of hanging space and hangers in the wardrobes. The roof terrace is the best part of the apartment with lovely views of the sea and town and great sun sets in the evening. We spent a lot of time relaxing and reading on the terrace and with a bit of shade and the usual breeze it was not too uncomfortable even in the heat of midday. The apartment is well located as it is only a few minutes walk to the beach, shops, bars, restaurants and even the hospital. The staff were resonably friendly and were happy to help with any queries we had. We tried breakfast one morning but weren't too impressed so didn't bother again! (Not very good and certainly not cheap). The apartment is unique and ideal for couples. Response: We normally find the bedroom fan keeps it reasonably cool, and at other times we just open the doors to the balcony and watch the lights of the yachts twinkling in the bay. However, these guests stayed in August when sometimes it can get hot... Casa Velha offers a continental breakfast which is basic but the coffee is good, and the evening cocktails are just scrummy! |
