The Barlavento Islands / Boa Vista Island region

Boavista is an island of sand dunes, long white beaches, and clear sea. Originally named Sao Cristovao when discovered in 1480, the name Boa Vista caught on after sailors cried from the crow's nest of sailing barques “Boa Vista” (meaning Beautiful View). Settled in 1620, by Captain Rodrigo Afonso who obtained a permit for farming cattle and goats, it also developed potteries and weaving.
Boavista has a dry-tropical climate. Humidity is low. The average daily temperature ranges from 22°C to 26°C. Highs of 29°C are seen in July/August with lows of 20°C in December/January. Ocean surface water temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C, creating a maritime temperate climate.
There are two seasons, a dry season between November and July, and a "wet" season, with some (very rare!) rain between August and October. Daily hours of sunshine vary from around 6 - 7 between August and October and 10 - 12 for the rest of the year
The Sal Rei area
Turtle Watching - Every year, from late May to September, more than 3,000 loggerhead turtles (Caretta) come ashore on Cape Verde´s beaches, particularly at Ervatao beach, the third most important loggerhead nesting site in the world.
Whale Watching - organised half day tours are available to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Estoril Beach is situated just South of Sal Rei and is sheltered by the Ilheu de Sal Rei making it the calmest on the Island and ideal for families and the novice at surfing, diving and watersports. There are a number of beach bars as well as the submarine diving centre and the Boa Vista Wind Club where you can obtain expert instruction in diving and wind-surfing.
Sal Rei has over 20 restaurants to choose from with both local and european cuisine.
Other activities include: kite-surfing, horse riding, cycle hire, beach buggy hire, 4x4 hire, guided tours of the island, walking, Ultra Marathon

Stunning, simply stunning. These apartments are brilliantly designed, with a high standard of interior design. Stylish, comfortable - and the MOST comfortable bed I've slept in away from home in a long and varied travel history! Casa Velha is a small development, maybe 10 apartments in total. It has an intimacy that really works - for those of us who dread the idea of big hotels and all-inclusive 'mass package' tourism, it's a great alternative. The Penthouse is the crowning glory in all this. Up on the top floor, you get a real sense of privacy and refuge, really important after a day's 4x4 off-roading. The terrace is brilliant - comfortable seating, stunning 360 views, and the perfect place to enjoy a sunny breakfast and get to know the local birds who came each morning in the search of the odd crumb. The Penthouse is light, spacious, has a well-equipped kitchen and a lovely bedroom with 4-poster that enjoys one of the best views out over the dunes and to sea. The staff deserve a special mention. The house-keeping was second to none - two lovely, friendly, smiley women who took a real pride in their work - and boy do they work hard. You should see them carrying large bowls of laundry on their heads up 4 flights. Poise and grace beyond most people's ken. All staff were a real credit: obliging, friendly and welcoming. And at least two of them make awesome coffee and mix an excellent Negroni. The breakfast is good value and good quality - well worth it if you don't want to make your own. Sal Rei, for its part, is charming. A small place, as Capitals go, but again with such warmth among local people. There's a great supermarket to buy all your groceries, and the Municipal market does all your fruit and veg and local cheese. It's also a great way to meet some local men and women and have some banter. And remember to pay a fair price - much food is imported. We spent simple days on Boa Vista. 2 weeks flew by, just having late starts, reading, chilling and watching 'city' life over a coffee in Esplanada in the main square, and then choosing a beach bar for lunch. Aliosis and Boa Vista Social Club are streets ahead for lunch, and right by Casa Velha. Walk down Estoril Beach to Chaves, hire a 4x4 and see Deserto de Viana, Espinguera and Praia Lacacao. Beauty beyond imagination. We LOVED Boa Vista. My advice? Go there now while mass tourism hasn't killed it and stay at Casa Velha. Just don't try to book the two weeks I want for my return visit... Response: Says it all really! One needs to accept BoaVista for what it is - these guests did, having researched the place beforehand, and they loved it..... |

Excellent penthouse with large private roof terrace as described, great to get up in the morning and read and sunbathe without the hassle of tramping to the pool or beach The apartment is clean and has everything you need for a good holiday, the staff are friendly and attentive. the beach and beach bars are two minutes walk away, the town and its many and varied restaurants five minutes walk away We will definitely be going back Response: Thanks for the lovely comments - we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Come back again soon! Yours is our fist review on TripAdvisor since we listed our penthouse separately from Casa Velha itself. |
Guestbook for Casa Velha Penthouse
"From the time we booked, the owners of the property were more than helpful in offering advice and information that was really invaluable to our stay. The apartment was big, bright and spotlessly clean. The terraced area was such a great place to relax and to watch the world go by. We really enjoyed being so close to the beach and the town. The local restaurants are amazing, I'd especially recommend Naida and the Blu Marlin. The apartment cafe offered a basic (but very tasty) breakfast and the staff were friendly and helpful. There is building work being carried out right next to the apartments but this didn't bother us at all. We definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a week to get away from it all and relax in the sunshine. "
