The property is a former paper mill originally built in 1688 which has been renovated into a home for the owners and 2 gites "Le Grand Cornet" (Home 1819719) and "Le Petit Raisin" which are virtually identical. The gites share their own private driveway and car park (approx 10m x 8m). They have been renovated to provide modern facilities while at the same time retaining as much of the character as possible. All the rooms are newly furnished, spacious and comfortable. Each gite has an upstairs with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 (2 doubles, 1 twin) and family bathroom. All the bedrooms have wall-mounted electric heaters and the bathroom has a heated towel rail. Downstairs is open plan with living room, kitchen, dining area and a cosy wood-burning stove. There is a downstairs toilet and each gite has its own private patio (approx 6m x 5m) with dining table for 6.
We have a 4m plunge pool, petanque pitch, trampoline and basketball hoop which are shared by both gites and the owners. NEW for May 2015 - an 80m2 decking area around the plunge pool with external wifi and sunloungers for you to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The property is set in 5 acres of grounds, including garden, woodland and streams and there are ducks and free range chickens. Guests are free to explore the grounds and feed the chickens and ducks.
Peaceful countryside location, close by is a public footpath running alongside a river with an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. The river is popular with the local fisherman, and can be fished with a licence. Walking distance to the village of Saint Séverin which has a local SPAR supermarket, bar, bakery, pharmacy, bank with cash machine, Post Office and a newsagents. Just outside the village is an 18-hole crazy golf course and an outdoor recreation centre at Moulin de Poltrot with canoeing and tree-top zipwires. The hillside village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' is a 15 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit for its famous monolithic church and a beautiful tree-lined square with cafes and restaurants and its river beach. A short 15 minute drive from the property is a 9 hole FFG golf course, set in peaceful countryside with its own bar/restaurant and tennis courts. The market towns of Riberac, Verteillac and Chalais are all within a 30 minutes drive. Brantome the 'Venice of Perigord' is a 50 minutes drive away and makes for an interesting day out. There is a Benedictine Abbey, excellent restaurants and bars and with a beautiful river running right through it. Nearby are the underground caves at Villars and Brantome Police Horses and Friends. The capital town of Angouleme is a 45 minutes drive away and has a wide range of shops and museums to visit. Just outside is Nautilus an indoor leisure centre with swimming pools and slides. Bergerac is an hour drive away, and the old town has narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. You can take an hour long boat trip on an old 'gabarres' (flat bottomed boat). The Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards are all within a 90 minutes drive. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In Cognac, Martell, Hennessy (includes a boat ride on the Charente river) and Remy Martin (includes a train ride tour around the estate) offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the pretty hilltop town of Saint-Emilion and Montbazillac.

"Lovely Gite in a peaceful location within walking distance of village."
We stayed in Gary and Jo's beautifully restored Gite for two weeks with two teenagers and an 11 year old. The Gite is well equipped with everything that a family needs from a well-equipped kitchen to free Wifi. There is a private patio area that has sun loungers and a large wooden table, six chairs and parasol for al fresco dining which we did all the evenings when we dined at home. The plunge pool and feeding the chickens and ducks were particular attractions for our 11 year old! The proximity to the village of Saint Severin - we could walk there in at most 15 mins - was also very attractive to us as we could go to the bakery every morning for fresh bread and croissants. There is also a grocery shop with vegetables, fruit and other groceries. And there is quite a large Spar. There is also a very nice restaurant serving good, simple French cuisine at a reasonable price and also two bars. One of which serves bar food. We also visited the soccer pitch where the two boys and their dad spent some time re-living World Cup penalty shoot-outs! The surrounding countryside is very attractive with fields of sunflowers and sweetcorn the norm. There are also a number of river/lake beaches within driving distance (15 to 30 mins drive). One is located in the beautiful village of Aubeterre Sur Dronne, The owners Jo and Gary were exceptional hosts and did all they could to make our stay special. As well as fresh free range eggs, they gave us lots of information on things to do in the area and couldn't be more helpful.
