About the home

Our home is a tall, old town house slotted into the bend of a quiet side street. No two walls are at right angles, so modernising the interior was a challenge. What we haven’t done is change the character of the house. What we have done is made it really comfortable, put in three new bathrooms and given you a great base for your holiday.

The house is in Prades, an attractive small market town in the south west of France. It is located between the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean and the peaks of the Pyrenees, and has something to offer visitors in all seasons of the year. It's a great base if you enjoy walking, trekking or riding in the valleys and mountains.

We have had some big parties of friends and family here—the house takes 10 easily (12 if you are good friends), but we have also been really comfy as a couple too. There is a large dining room and two very different sitting rooms as well as a private courtyard and terrace. There are full details of the house and area on our website, see below for link.

Facilities

Further details indoors:
The ground floor has a studio room that can be used as a bedroom or as a second sitting room. There is large, old and unusual bathroom, a separate WC, and access to the courtyard.

The first floor has a sunny south facing sitting room. The dining room has a working log fireplace and its original moulded plaster ceiling. This room leads directly into the kitchen, which is fully equipped.

The second floor consists of a suite of double bedroom, dressing room and en suite shower room and WC. Across the landing there is a south facing double bedroom with en suite shower room and WC.

The third floor has a large attic bedroom with en suite shower room and WC. There is a double bed and two singles in this room. Across the landing is the sun terrace.

Further details outdoors:
At the back of the house is a completely private walled courtyard. It has a wisteria and mature pepper tree that provides shade in the heat of the day. There is garden furniture including chairs and a table. The courtyard is the perfect place to relax in summer. It is cool and the sunlight is dappled by the tree.

On the south side of the third floor is a large open sun terrace. The terrace has excellent views on all sides which are dominated on the south side by the Canigou mountain. The terrace has two olive trees which fruit in summer, a barbecue, a large table and chairs. The terrace catches sun throughout the day, even in winter it gets hot!

There is ample free parking 100m away from the front door. Prades has a good outdoor swimming pool 5 minutes walk from the house. The house is on a quiet street less than 2 minutes walk from the old town square, where there are restaurants, cafes and shops.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Prades lies in at the heart of the Conflent valleys. The confluence of a number of rivers, the region is exceptionally green and fertile. The local produce is varied and tasty - summer peaches are a particular treat. There are hot springs, caves, beautiful woods and mountains.
This landscape offers numerous opportunities for walking, hiking, riding, cycling, climbing, caving and bird watching.
Prades is also in French Catalonia. There are many fortified towns, coastal watchtowers and castles throughout the area. Many of our guests keep coming back because there is so much to do and see.

The Prades area

Prades is a pretty French town with a big and colourful market on Tuesday mornings. The Romanesque church has the largest baroque Reredos in France. There are cafes, brasseries and restaurants as well as a good range of shops all around the town square.
There are events and festivals throughout the year. Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night.

Mediterranean beaches are 30 minutes away. There is some great walking, as well as fishing, windsurfing, climbing and other outdoor activities available nearby. In winter the nearest ski resorts are just 45km away. There are pretty towns and villages, castles, abbeys and lots of museums.

By Air: There are several airports within a 3 hour-drive of the house. In order of closeness they are Perpignan (45 minutes), Girona, Beziers, Carcassone, Montpellier, Barcelona, and Toulouse. Airlines are Ryanair, EasyJet, FlyBe, BA and Air France.

By Train: International services are Eurostar to Avignon, Motorail to Narbonne, TGV to Perpignan from Paris, Lille, Barcelona and Montpellier. Prades local train station is 5 minutes walk from the house.

By Road: The house is a short drive from the N116 and links with the A9 Motorway from Barcelona to central France.

“Fantastic House” We had a fantastic couple of weeks in Prades with our two children (7 and 4). It's an attractive and friendly town and the surrounding area is stunning. The mountains and gorges are amazing, and the reservoir about 5 miles away at Vinca has a great beach and is an ideal place for safe swimming for children. The local swimming pools in Prades and up the Road at Vernet le Bains are also fantastic for kids and adults. The house itself is comfortable, spacious, beautifully decorated and very well equipped – the kitchen for example has everything you need to cook properly and goes far beyond what you'd expect in a holiday home. The best bit is the roof terrace – the views of the mountain are amazing and sitting on the roof with a glass of Rose at the end of the day was great! Would thoroughly recommend and we will definitely be back.
