BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente Maritime has its own microclimate and its sunshine record is comparable to the South of France. The main crops grown here are sunflowers, tobacco and maize. It is ideal for cycling and walking as it is relatively flat.
The coastal area is well known for its famous beaches at La Palmyre and Royan. (And also the fantastic seafood restaurants). Inland it is much quieter with pretty towns such as Cognac, Jonzac and Pons. Saintes is 20 minutes away where you can hire your own boat on the Charente river or take an evening cruise on a river boat.
Golf course nearby at Royan and Bordeaux is a short drive/train journey away for those seeking some serious shopping!
The Pons / St Palais de Phiolin area
Pons is a Medieval town with a famouns Donjon. You can climb to the top of the tower and see for miles. There are many small villages with good restaurants. A new Eleclerc supermarket has just been opened at Pons and there is a Super U close by at Gemozac.
There are Pineau distilleries close by and visits for tasting can be arranged with the owners. Dont forget the trips to the Cognac distilleries of Remy Martin, Henessy and others at Cognac and Jarnac., or head for Saintes on the first Monday of each month to visit the colourful street market.
I n July and August the area is covered in sunflowers as far as the eye can see.

This is lovely gite which retains a rustic charm while having all the things you need to have a comfortable stay. The pool is excellent and you have the option of eating outside or in. We stayed for one week and were in another gite for the second part of our holiday. This worked well as there is a fair amount of driving to the places to visit in the surrounding area. The gite provides a great base for relaxing and exploring local towns including Pons and Cognac as well as a drive of c40 minutes to the coast. Good beaches near Royan and a trip to the zoo at Palmyre is well worth a visit. The accommodation is advertised as being not suitable for under 5s though we were travelling with our children aged 5 and 2 and had a relaxing time. There are stairs and care has to because the pool is near the back of the gite. |
