The North West Italy region
Surrounded by many beautiful medieval villages - Apricale 10 minutes away, 8km
All have their own character and even signature dishes. Apricale, 10 minutes from Pigna. It's a special place with a beautiful square with great restaurants, churchs, museum etc.
Other stunning villages include Rochetta Nervina, Isolabona both within 10 minutes drive of Pigna. Dolceaqua Home to the famous bridge painted by Monet. Great place to explore with ruined castle, churches and lots of fantastic restaurants. Hosts many festivals in the summer, music, theatre, outdoor cinema and an amazing fireworks display in August. The walk to the castle takes you past art galleries , wine bars and special unique gift shops.Very pretty small town with lots going on.
10 minutes drive from Pigna.
We have four videos on you tube that bring the area to life : pigna italy the surrounding area.... pigna italy the coast..... pigna italy things to do pigna italy the appartment ..note this is our old apartment but shows some great shots of pigna ....see links below
Pigna is 1 hour drive 45km from Nice airport in the south of France. A hire car is recommended although airport pick up can be arranged and public transport, bus and trains are available.
The public transport system is very good - trains link the coast making a hassle free trip to Monaco,Nice or San Remo a great adventure for the day.
Pigna is in the nervia valley surrounded by mountains making it a special place with a combination of relaxing countryside, mountains , busy coastline and major tourist areas.
Walking, cycling and mountain sports are very popular, the area is a designated area of natural beauty and is criss-crossed by well marked walking routes.

"FABULOUS VILLA - PERFECT LOCATION!!"
If you want to experience the real Italy and stay in a medieval village (with all modern conveniences of course!) then this is the place for you.
From first booking and contacting Ian and Susan, the owners, through the service received from Georgia who takes care of the housekeeping of the villa, to leaving and (sadly) handing back the keys, the whole experience was friendly, courteous and over and above what is normally expected from villa rentals. You are made to feel that you a guest in a friend's home rather than a paying customer.
The villa itself is gorgeous, very roomy with lots of outside space for just relaxing, sunbathing or entertaining. It is furnished to a very high standard and the rooms are large and light and airy. There is all the equipment you need and even two televisions (with UK Freeview channels just in case you can't bear to miss the British soaps!).
The location is perfect, just inside the medieval village but with easy access from the car park with the views from the terrace to die for, beautiful mountains with a fairy tale village appearing to be hanging on the side of a mountain. It is so peaceful and relaxing you probably won't want to leave. But you will want to walk down to the main village and visit the local restaurants and café/bars where the food and wine are excellent and very reasonably priced and where you can meet with the locals who are very friendly and welcoming. We made friends with the owner of Sul Ponte, the restaurant/café in the village, and the patisserie owner, who soon remembered our 'tipple' - in the patisserie our 'tipple' being the delicious homemade ice cream! If you are 'tennis mad' like us there is a newly built tennis court available for hire in the village at a reasonable charge per hour, bookings are made with the owner of the patisserie.
Pigna is ideally located for both the French and Italian Riviera, with easy access to Monaco and Nice on the French Riviera and, on the Italian Riviera, through pretty coastal villages to San Remo.
We had a wonderful time and will be returning next year to see all the places we didn't have time to visit and once more enjoy this unspoilt Italian paradise.
Thanks Ian and Susan for sharing your beautiful 'Place in the Sun' and we look forward to spending many more holidays in your villa.
Thank you Irene and John for the great comments - hope to see you again next year
