Photos
Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Les Vignes Anciennes is located in the Vallee d'Herault, a beautiful area stretching from the Cevennes mountains down to the Mediterranean coast. Here are just a few of the countless places that you can visit in the region, many being reached easily by either the A9 or A75 autoroutes.
You will find brochures for many of the attractions in the villa, but better still, plan a few trips at leisure before your departure using guidebooks or the departmental websites such as
http://www.herault-tourisme.com
Montpellier
45 minutes drive away, Montpellier is a vibrant city with everything to offer the whole family, especially culture, shopping, restaurants and night-life. Start with the Place de la Comedie and you can't go wrong. See http://www.montpellier.fr and other websites for more information.
Carcassonne
A great day out for the whole family, Carcassonne is the original citadel about 75 minutes drive to the west. Photos of the place just don't do it justice. The defining moment is when you first approach the citadel and start to appreciate the sheer scale of it. Inside the citadel are lots of restaurants, artisanal shops (not to mention the church and museum) and nooks and crannies for the kids to play hide and seek! (http://www.carcassonne.org)
Kids activities
Aqualand - an exciting water park at Cap D'Agde (http://www.aqualand.fr/cap_dagde.htm).
Dinosaur Park at Meze. Enjoy a trip back through time at the largest dinosaur park in Europe.http://www.musee-parc-dinosaures.com. Less than 15 minutes from the villa.
Grotte des Demoiselles or "the Fairies' cave" (http://www.demoiselles.com/) in Saint Bauzille de Putois, Ganges. An impressive set of caverns with one breathtakingly large "cathedrale" cavern and a real atmosphere to it.
Beaches
There are excellent spacious and sandy beaches within easy driving distance all along the coast. The nearest are Valras Plage, Vias Plage and the quieter Marseillan Plage and Serignan Plage. The vibrant, modern port and resort town of Cap d'Agde is only a 25 minute drive away. See the beaches section on the Herault tourism website http://www.herault-tourisme.com
More for the grown-ups
St Guilhem-le-Desert. A very pretty medieval village and abbey at the bottom of the Herault gorge on the edge of the Cevennes.
La Couvertoirade. This fortified mediaeval village, on the high Cevennes plateau to the north, was once home to the Knights Templar. Walk round the battlements and visit the craft and specialist shops inside the fortifications.
Sete. A bustling, colourful fishing port, with canals and quaint areas as well as many shops and seafood restaurants. http://www.ot-sete.fr
Vineyards and wine tasting
Last, but not least are the countless vineyards in the region where you can enjoy tasting the many wines on offer such as Faugeres or Minervois. You don't have to go very far from the villa; one of a couple vineyards that we like to use is the very typical and genuine Domaine Condamine l'Eveque in the village of Nezignan l'Eveque (5km), who sell their Cotes de Thongue wines to the Wine Society. For white wines from the distinctive appellation Picpoul de Pinet region visit the slightly more commercial Ormarine Winery in Pinet (10km), www.cave-ormarine.com.
The Pezenas area
Pezenas is described in the Rough Guide as one of the most singularly beautiful towns in the French Southwest. It has a huge Saturday market and there are numerous events staged in the town during an extended season. While the old town, with its varied selection of shops and restaurants and its interesting historic building trail, is about 1km away, there is a large supermarket within 3 minutes walk, now open on Sunday mornings.
For ball games there is park within 3 minutes walk, with adjoining tennis courts. Beyond the park, you can walk to the town centre in 15 minutes using back roads and quiet footpaths; directions and a map are held in the villa.
A good choice of restaurant for your first evening would be the Lou Grilhet, within 8 minutes walk of the villa, with plenty more to explore during the rest of your stay, either in Pezenas or in one of the nearby villages. Our choice for the best restaurants in town would be L'Entre-Pots or Le Pre Saint Jean. The friendly tourist office has a full list of restaurants and other attractions in town.

Flying.
There are now many airlines flying to area, but Pézenas is in the middle of Ryanair territory and outside the peak season at least, Ryanair can be cheaper than others.
Béziers (20 mins) is the nearest airport and has a Ryanair service from Luton, Bristol, Manchester and Stansted(including Saturdays from Luton). Montpellier is the next nearest airport – 50 mins. Easyjet fly to Montpellier from Gatwick and Luton.
Nîmes (Ryanair from Luton), Carcasonne (Ryanair from Stansted and Bournemouth), and Perpignan (Ryanair from Stansted, Flybe from Southampton, and BMI baby) are all within 1hr 15mins drive. Toulouse, Marseilles, Gerona (Spain) are within about 2 hours' drive.
All the above (except Beziers) have good motorway access to Pézenas.
Car Hire.
Car hire is available from all airports, but it is cheaper to book in advance in the UK. We have used Auto Europe a lot but have also found Europcar competitive when you book through the Easyjet website, even without using their flights. There is generally no extra premium for dropping off a hire car at a different location to the pick up point (for rentals over 4 days).
Car hire in Spain is usually cheaper than in France, but watch out for additional insurance required to take vehicles out of Spain (varies between suppliers).
Driving to Pezenas.
The distance from Calais or Boulogne to Pézenas is about 630 miles (1015 km) and the driving time is about 9.5 hours at legal speeds on a clear road. From the short sea crossing ports the most straightforward route is via Reims, Dijon and Lyon using the A26, A7 and A9 Autoroutes. However, this is a toll road all the way, apart from a few short sections through Reims, Lyon and Montpellier.
An alternative (shorter) route is to pick up the A10 autoroute south of Paris and then continue via Clermont Ferrand to Pézenas on the A71 and A75 Autoroutes. While the A71 as far as Clermont Ferrand is a normal toll autoroute, the A75 is free (apart from the spectacular Millau viaduct) and passes over the plateau of the Massif Central. It is a hilly motorway, but this affords many good views over the surrounding countryside. To avoid more toll autoroutes, go to the west of Paris via Rouen and Chartres before picking up the A10.

A superbly fitted out villa with quality fixtures and fittings, you could not fault the equipment and the villa itself was first class. On the edge of Pezenas with good local facilities, but close enough to the centre of town with its shopping and restaurants, not in a noisy area so very restful would definately go again. |
