La Forgeard is a stunning conversion of a 700-year-old mill, complete with a spectacular four poster master bedroom, a hot tub and a beautiful river running at the bottom of the garden.
Within a few minutes' drive of the Medieval town of Parthenay, the property is in the Deux Sevres area of Poitou Charentes, known for its particularly sunny climate.
Whether you are looking for a well-deserved holiday, a shorter break or a weekend away, we will happily meet your needs.
The house is unusually spacious and, with its four double bedrooms (three very large double bedrooms and one twin), can easily provide enough space for eight people whilst it also makes the perfect romantic retreat for couples.
Set over three floors, with two bedrooms and a bathroom on both the first and second floors, the house can accommodate one or two families at a time. It is therefore possible for two families to stay in the property at the same time and enjoy a floor each.
However, the house is also equally suitable for couples and smaller groups to enjoy. Thanks to the romantic master bedroom, with its breathtaking super king Tudor-style four poster bed, and its quiet and peaceful location, the house is ideal for honeymooning couples or those keen to spend some quality time together.
The relaxing lounge and elegant dining room, each with an open fireplace, as well as the dining kitchen and mezzanine, leave you spoilt for choice as to where to spend your time.
The focal point of the house, however, has to be the beautiful beamed lounge with its exceptional fireplace, measuring nine feet across, and its stunning mezzanine floor, which offers a relaxing reading area and well-stocked book-and-DVD case together with an office and computer. (Wifi is also included in the rental of the house.)
The kitchen is well equipped with lovely views of the garden and includes yet another comfortable seating area, where you can bask in the rays of the sun for most of the day, as well as a dining area. There is, of course, also more formal dining room should you prefer to eat in style.
One of the many advantages of La Forgeard is that it is only a few minutes' drive from Parthenay, with its wealth of history, and from nearby villages (our favourite restaurant in the world is in the next village) and yet it is amazingly peaceful.
With only one other house and a farm in the hamlet, you can really get away from it all if you wish and enjoy traffic-free peace and quiet, which might only be broken occasionally by the peaceful sounds of the river or the odd neigh from a horse in the field beyond.
It is also amazing how brightly the stars shine at night here without the light pollution that it is so hard to escape from in today's world.
If you want to combine your idyllic stay with some sight-seeing, La Forgeard is in the perfect location. It is just over an hour from the beautiful beaches of La Rochelle and the fascinating and exciting tourist spots of Puy du Fou, the biggest historical and educational theme park in the world, and Futuroscope are within easy reach.
There are also plenty of local opportunities for fishing, walking, swimming, cycling or golf.
We can recommend some excellent nearby restaurants or you can simply relax with a book or DVD, make the most of the rest you know you deserve and savour the delicious food and wonderful wines available locally.

About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
Parthenay, a fascinating ancient fortified town, is just a few minutes' drive from the house. It is positioned on a rocky spur and surrounded on two sides by the River Thouet (which also runs through the bottom of our garden.)
The castle, situated at the tip of the rocky promontory surrounded by the loop of the river, was built in the 13th century. This is also when the outer fortifications protecting the citadel, and the town itself, were completed.
There are several very good supermarkets (where we buy our prawns, or crevettes, by the kilo at ridiculously cheap prices compared to the UK), some interesting shops and plenty of lovely restaurants.
Be sure to check out the town's stunning Medieval quarter. A stroll up the town's cobbled Medieval street is a must. (There is a restaurant at the top that does very good steaks too.)
There is a market here every Wednesday.
Every July, Parthenay also hosts the Festival Ludique International de Parthenay, also known as the Festival de Jeux (or Games Festival.) At this time, the town's streets are filled with giant games of every kind and anybody can join in. This festival appeals to people of all generations and is a joy to witness.

"Superb house in a great location"
I can't fault the communication from Susan and La Forgeard is a fantastic property.
The location is very rural yet within easy reach of civilisation and some of the best tourist attractions in the Vendee. It's maybe and hour and forty minutes from La Rochelle and about an hour from Futuroscope, which has always been too far away on previous visits.
The house is more than spacious allowing three adults and two kids to find their own space and maintain a bit of sanity. It's well appointed with pretty much everything you need for a comfortable self-catering holiday. A blender is probably the only thing that's missing and it's hardly a chore to live without one. The four-poster room is rather special.

"Fabulous, Spacious and Peaceful"
We had a wonderful stay at La Forgeard and although there were nine of us, the house was plenty big enough. The location was so peaceful and the stars in the sky at night were superb.

We had a wonderful time! A beautiful and relaxing place to get away from it all! The mill is stunning and lovely big rooms for all to enjoy! Hot tub went down very well! Visited a variety of places and especially loved La Rochelle! Thank you for a wonderful stay, would definitely love to visit again!

"Lovely Spacious House"
Travelled here with my husband and daughter. We were definitely not short on space although it does still feel homely and cosy. The master bedroom is amazing with its four poster bed. Although the house itself is quite secluded, it is only about an hour's drive from the coast so you get the best of both worlds. Very well priced considering its size. A lovely authenticly French property. Would definitely recommend.

"Perfect getaway for couples!"
We stayed here in January and only have great things to say about it!
Although this property is large, me and my partner felt at home and wonderfully cosy. The river at the bottom of the garden is idyllic!
Being just a few minutes drive from the nearest shops meant that it was a perfect getaway as we were set in the beautiful peace and tranquility of the house, yet close to 'life' if we needed it.
The four poster bed is a definate WOW factor! It's traditional yet modern, warm and cosy yet imposing and grand!
The perfect retreat! We'll definately stay again and would recommend it to anyone else considering it.
