The Najac area
The immediate area provides a huge variety of activities, sites of natural beauty and interest. The medieval village of Najac with its imposing hill top chateau is one of the “Plus beaux villages de France” noted as places of special beauty and culture.
For families, artists, walkers and trekkers and those wishing to get back to nature the area is a delight. We travelled with two young boys (1 and 3) and a set of grandparents. The fact that this is working farm is a major selling point for us. The boys loved watching the owner's tractor turn over the hay and then make hay bales, they were even allowed to sit in the tractor......a real treat. The kids also enjoyed feeding the chickens and watching the piglets running around. Feeding carrots to the donkeys was a constant high point, the donkeys must have permanent night vision now! The accommodation is excellent, clean and tidy. The thick walls keep the heat out and is a welcome break from the sun at times, we took a paddling pool for the kids! All rooms well presented, huge comfy sofas leading to a lovely decked area with cracking views over Najac Castle. Watching the castle appear out of the mist is spectacular. The owners grow vegetables in the garden and you are allowed to pick and use any that are ready. We made a lovely ratatouille from the garden........yummy! At the end of the garden are two lovely pigs who will gladly take any leftovers! The owners can also supply home reared meat, sausages, bacon etc.....the bangers were great on the barbeque! Najac is a 10 min drive away and has everything that you need, the bakery has the usual range of stunning French bread, and there is a small mini market for the absolute essentials. The village has some excellent markets, we particulary enjoyed the night market, the local suppliers are all in attendance and all cook their produce, the smells...... Tables are laid out in the main square and live music keeps all entertained! You never know who you will bump into, we met a Dr Who.....Sylvester McCoy!! However 20 mins in the other direction is Villefranche De Rouergue, a lovely town with the usual hypermarkets and a mini train that takes you around the tiny streets, this serves as a great starting point for your adventures. Ask the owners for lakes and rivers to swim in as the gite doesn't have a pool, however swimming and paddling in the local rivers is lots of fun, building dams etc...I am a big kid at heart!! There is a local swimming pool, just remember your speedos....:) Our best memory? The owners have a menu of food that they can prepare, cook and server to your gite. We saved this to our last night and what a treat, kids asleep, wine flowing and a lovely meal delivered to our table. We felt totally relaxed, just what a holiday is for. Any bad points? None that we can think of, if you want to spend two weeks immersed in total relaxation, this is the place! Jamie and Ali made us very welcome from the moment we arrived, and whilst they were always available they also were keen to leave us to it and let us enjoy our holiday with minimal intervention. We love it there, 2nd visit in 2 years. Would we go again? Yes most certainly, the children are older and need more stimulation, and we don't like using a television as a "nanny", sow e may not be back this year, but when they are older and don't need as much attention, well it's perfect. Thoroughly recommended, Jamie and Ali have the receipe for a perfect holiday! |
