The Midi-Pyrénées region
The Midi Pyrenees/Aveyron is located in the South West of France and includes spectacular countryside, the Pyrenean mountains, rivers and gorges, historical sites including many Bastides (walled and fortified towns), medieval villages, museums and art galleries.
There are outstanding leisure opportunities, including walking riding, climbing, mountain biking, kayak and canoe set in wonderful natural surroundings. The area benefits from a vibrant community spirit with a fantastic range of markets, fetes and other celebrations. Or just take a step back, relax, and take in the glorious views!
The immediate area provides a huge variety of activities, sites of natural beauty and interest. The medieval village of Najac with its imposing hill top château is one of the “Plus beaux villages de France” an a "Grand Site midi pyrénées" important culturally and historically in South West France.
For families, friends, young and more mature the area is a delight. If you want to explore the villages; take in a local festival, investigate local crafts and traditions be adventurous and go mountain biking, family kayaking, horse riding or swimming - all facilities are available within a very short distance. There is a very good modern swimming pool minutes from the farm in a lovely spot next to the river, alternatively the surrounding area provides a variety of beautiful safe river swimming locations. By the Najac swimming pool you can hire kayaks, bikes, have a go at acro-branching (tree top course for the brave or young!) start a walk along the river or take a picnic at one of the permanent placements. La Singlarie figures on a number of the well marked circular walks around the Najac countryside
Najac offers a good range of shops, excellent dining options from cafés and gourmet restaurants to the popular pizza restaurant and traditional restaurants with great value meals. From spring and to autumn Najac has a lively weekly market selling tasty local produce in the centre of the village and cafés from which to watch the world go by over a coffee or aperitif. In summer there are weekly night markets where tables are laid out to seat locals and visitors keen to try the local cuisine from the various stalls, taste local wines and listen to a wide variety of live music.
The village is full of history: visit the part ruined château, walk along its winding streets and discover its hidden treasures - it is a marvellous place to be so near.
The annual Najac Fete is over 3 days in August celebrating Saint Barthelemy, is a feast of local cuisine, music, street entertainment, exhibitions and activities culminating in Fireworks over the château - quite a spectacle for the whole village an its visitors. If you prefer to watch from home the fireworks over the château can watched from your gite.
For a relaxing evening treat take a short drive to La Garde Viar to the café/bar by the river and enjoy some night time jazz.
The "Epicerie du Coin" is an excellent general store in the centre of Najac and with the boulangerie just a few steps away will satisfy many of your food shopping needs. At La Fouillade (15 minutes from La Singlarie) you will find a large Intermarche supermarket with all the usual produce plus a service station for fuel.
During spring and summer months it is possible to shop at one of the many village markets any day of the week and we will be pleased to offer any advice concerning which to visit.
The bastide of Villefranche de Rouergue (3o mins) is the nearest large town. It has three large supermarkets and all the other shops you are likely to need. Visit its Thursday morning market, one of the largest in the region, held in its central square with medieval arcades, imposing church and visit one of the many restaurants, cafés, bars, explore its history or take a walk along its river front.
The larger towns of Albi (home to a spectacular cathedral and enthralling history, plus the Toulouse Lautrec museum, great shopping and restaurants) and Gaillac (famous for its wines) are easily accessible as are other noted attractions such as Cordes-sur-Ciel, Saint-Cirq-lapopie, Figeac, Conques, Belcastel and the Millau viaduct.

"lovely hide away in the green hills of France"
we had a lovely time in the green hills of the Aveyron region staying on Jamie & Ali's Farm. They have some great organic home grown food to enjoy. Furthermore, lots of historical charm, beautiful views and great roads and unspoiled medieval villages to explore, green pastures, wine vineyards, excellent local markets to buy lovely cheese. We loved the castle in Najac and views on Najac from the farm. Sometimes the castle was covered in clouds, just its nose sticking out, picture perfect!

Nice and clean appartments with a wonderful view at Najac. We loved the pigs. Aly is a great cook and Jamie the perfect butler.

"well equiped house with a fabulous view."
We had a very pleasant stay at La Singlarie. The house was clean, had a good kitchen en nice beds. We loved to pick our own herbs from the garden. The garden was spacious. Our 5 children were able to play in it and we still had a quiet spot to read. The children loved to help feeding the animals in the afternoon. If we had questions, the owners always had time to answer them. We made a few beautifull walks and visited some nice mediëval towns. On the last night of our stay we had a very nice diner made by the owners. It was a superb holiday!!

"Beautifully located farm with great hosts"
The guest area, an old stone farmhouse, was simple but modern with a wonderful view of the valley and the Najac village and castle. The farm is a working farm and our young daughters were welcome to help feed the pigs daily. The animals are farm animals but treated in the old fashioned way that is so humane compared to most farm animals today. We got great advice for short day trips to both historical sites and places the kids would love. We couldn't give a better recommendation. For either a family stay or a romantic getaway it's a great choice.

"Outstanding, total peace and quiet on a working farm!"
We travelled with two young boys (1 and 3) and a set of grandparents. The fact that this is working farm is a major selling point for us. The boys loved watching the owner's tractor turn over the hay and then make hay bales, they were even allowed to sit in the tractor......a real treat. The kids also enjoyed feeding the chickens and watching the piglets running around. Feeding carrots to the donkeys was a constant high point, the donkeys must have permanent night vision now! The accommodation is excellent, clean and tidy. The thick walls keep the heat out and is a welcome break from the sun at times, we took a paddling pool for the kids! All rooms well presented, huge comfy sofas leading to a lovely decked area with cracking views over Najac Castle. Watching the castle appear out of the mist is spectacular. The owners grow vegetables in the garden and you are allowed to pick and use any that are ready. We made a lovely ratatouille from the garden........yummy! At the end of the garden are two lovely pigs who will gladly take any leftovers! The owners can also supply home reared meat, sausages, bacon etc.....the bangers were great on the barbeque! Najac is a 10 min drive away and has everything that you need, the bakery has the usual range of stunning French bread, and there is a small mini market for the absolute essentials. The village has some excellent markets, we particulary enjoyed the night market, the local suppliers are all in attendance and all cook their produce, the smells...... Tables are laid out in the main square and live music keeps all entertained! You never know who you will bump into, we met a Dr Who.....Sylvester McCoy!! However 20 mins in the other direction is Villefranche De Rouergue, a lovely town with the usual hypermarkets and a mini train that takes you around the tiny streets, this serves as a great starting point for your adventures. Ask the owners for lakes and rivers to swim in as the gite doesn't have a pool, however swimming and paddling in the local rivers is lots of fun, building dams etc...I am a big kid at heart!! There is a local swimming pool, just remember your speedos....:) Our best memory? The owners have a menu of food that they can prepare, cook and server to your gite. We saved this to our last night and what a treat, kids asleep, wine flowing and a lovely meal delivered to our table. We felt totally relaxed, just what a holiday is for. Any bad points? None that we can think of, if you want to spend two weeks immersed in total relaxation, this is the place! Jamie and Ali made us very welcome from the moment we arrived, and whilst they were always available they also were keen to leave us to it and let us enjoy our holiday with minimal intervention. We love it there, 2nd visit in 2 years. Would we go again? Yes most certainly, the children are older and need more stimulation, and we don't like using a television as a "nanny", sow e may not be back this year, but when they are older and don't need as much attention, well it's perfect. Thoroughly recommended, Jamie and Ali have the receipe for a perfect holiday!
