The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Montpellier has many popular very long white sand beaches with beautiful dunes all along. You can get there by tramway or buses. If you like walking along the beach, head further to the west or the east where the beach gets increadibly wild. Have a look at the ponds which are particularly beautiful in spring or in autumn.
Montpellier is surrounded by many typical towns with like Sète with its old city build along a peninsula. The city is not only surrounded by water, many channels cross the city and the port is in the town center. Aigues Mortes is another town from which the crusaders left many times : impressive ramparts ! and a rich history. You will enjoy the typical mediterranean square in the village.
The countryside north of Montpellier is so interesting with its beautiful villages. Saint Guillem du Desert is the most famous of them, build at the end of a valley on the Saint Jacqus de Compostelle path. If you like good wine, there are many interresting caves such as the Pic Saint Loup terroir. This région is very beautiful and you will find many gorgeous villages : Saint Martin de Londres, Les Matelles, Quissac, and further, Sommières.
Montpellier is the ideal holiday destination, a historic, effervescent city with attractions that rank among the most prestigious world heritage sites.
From its medieval narrow streets –a must for shopping!- to the new districts designed by the greatest architects of our time, get ready to fall in love!
International festivals, dance, music, world-class exhibition in summer in Fabre Museum... a ton of events in Montpellier !
Alongside these great works and extraordinary events, Montpellier cultivates a taste for simplicity and pleasure; A bike ride to the nearby seaside, nose to the wind among vineyards and marshes; a fresh canoe jaunt along the Lez River, seeking the flora and fauna that embellish the banks of the Montpellier waterway; promenades along the green network and protected areas, observing on one hand this architecture that so many admire.
