The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Our top ten recommendations of places to visit in the area are:
• Avignon (1 hour away, North), an old Roman town steeped in history, nice squares, shops and arts
• Pont du Gard (40 minutes, North), an impressive Roman aqueduct towering over the river below
• Saint Guilhem les Deserts (40 minutes, West), pretty hillside village with pleasant walks into the surrounding hills and gorges
• Carcassone (2 hours, South West), a stunning fortified castle town
• Les Baux de Provence ( 1.5 hours, East), another hillside fortified town with great views and walks
• Pic Saint Loup (15 minutes) is very close, offering good walks (either to the ruined castle, or summit, if you’re feeling fit), wine tasting or mountain biking in the valley
• River Gorges of the Herault (30 minutes, North) offer numerous bathing spots, river walks, swimming in the waterfalls, or kayaking (you’ll see loads of operators as you travel towards Ganges) and beyond into the unspoilt Cevennes mountain range
• Collioure (2 hours, South) is a picturesque fishing port with the backdrop of the Pyrennees mountains
• Cassis (2 hours , East) is another quaint fishing village, near Marseille, with turquoise waters along fjords which you can explore by boat of foot
• Montpellier Zoo (10 minutes, South) is free to enter and well worth the visit for an enjoyable stroll among the animals and park. The city is also delightful, with a beautiful historic centre, great cafés, squares and restaurants.
The Golf de Coulondres is only 400 metres away and also has a bar, restaurant (open for lunch every day and dinner Thursday to Saturday) and large swimming pool, in addition to the 18-hole course. The entrance to the deer park is 100 metres away in the opposite direction to the golf course. Continuing in this direction, there is a cycle path which starts at the end of Rue des érables and goes as far as the Chateau de Restinclières. In the surrounding area there are a wide range of activities on offer including kayaking, climbing, mountain-biking (see information in folder). There are many beaches to choose from, a 30 to 40 minute drive away. For sandy beaches with trendy restaurants there is the stretch of coast between le Petit Travers and la Grande Motte (from the villa head towards the centre of Montpellier, following signs for the airport; go past the airport turning and continue towards La Grande Motte, taking the Petit Travers or Grand Travers exits). These beach restaurants have sun loungers for rent and generally do a “formule” including lunch and a glass of wine for around 25 euros for the day (for example Palm Ray and Côté Plage). Palavas, Carnon and La Grande Motte are the nearest seaside resorts and have plenty of restaurants and bars too. On the other side of Palavas, heading towards Frontignan and Sète is the beach of Villeneuve-les-Maguelone. There is an 11th century cathedral and a small train to take you from the car park along the lagoon to the beach itself. The beach nearby at Maguelone is semi-naturist. For more deserted beaches there is L’Espiguette, an area of sand dunes to the east of La Grande Motte, after La Grau du Roi (small fishing port and beaches). This is a popular area for horse-riding and kite-surfing.
