Casa Isabella
About the home
Casa Isabella has been carefully renovated using the honey-coloured stone and cotto flooring traditional to the area, but with a stylish and contemporary interior. It sleeps 8 people comfortably in 4 double bedrooms.
The house is situated in rolling hills with views of open farmland and medieval hilltop towns. It nestles in 7 acres of our land, with a vineyard and olive trees dotting the hillside. The private pool (10 x 5 m) is easily accessed through the French doors from the dining and living rooms, and across the terracotta terrace.
The house is perfectly situated for a peaceful holiday with family and friends...by the pool...perhaps strolling up to Montegiorgio (a good 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive) with its bustling Friday market, bars and shops; or taking in the excitement of a football match at the local stadium...or a trotting race at the hippodrome down the road. Alternatively there are plenty of other attractions close by, from the art of Crivelli and architecture of Fermo, to plays at the local amphitheatre in Falerone, opera at the renowned Macerata summer festival, lazy days at the seaside in Porto San Giorgio, or a visit to the mountains and lakes, with a few hours spent shopping in the various outlets (Prada and Tod's etc) close by. And not forgetting, of course, that to immerse oneself fully in the region, one must sample the delicious cuisine and wines of Le Marche!
In fact, a holiday here truly offers something for everyone!

The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

Described as the 'New Tuscany', the relatively undiscovered region of Le Marche adjoins Umbria, and spans 180 kms of Adriatic coastline to the east, and the breathtaking beauty of the Sibillini National Park to the west. May, June and September are the perfect months to enjoy the region, but if you are visiting in July and August, the cool and unspoilt waters of the mountain lakes are a welcome respite from the heat of the summer sun. In winter it becomes a lowkey skiing resort.
The Marchigian fare reflects these regions, with country cooking to be found in the interior, such as the local stuffed olives, truffles and the baked 'vincisgrassi', a rich layered pasta dish of meat and bechamel. Along the coastline, aside from simple fresh grilled and fried fish and shellfish, one finds fish soup, 'zuppa di pesce', flavoured with saffron.
There are many sandy Blue Flag beaches along the coast with excellent facilities and elegant palm-fringed promenades; favourites include Porto san Giorgio and Grottammare. Further north you'll find the dramatic Monte Conero, rising up behind pretty and fashionable pebbly beach resorts, perfect for delicious fresh fish and people-watching...not to mention swimming and sunbathing!
Further afield, a day trip to the magnificent Frasassi Caves is certainly worth considering, as is a day spent in the magical city of Urbino, Raphael's birthplace. You might also search out the art of Crivelli and his followers, which can be found all over Le Marche.
Have a look at the informative and appealing www.le-marche.com website for more information about the region.
The Montegiorgio area
Montegiorgio is 5 minutes from Casa Isabella, with its supermarkets, delicious local produce, butchers, fish shop, busy Friday morning market, bread shop, patisserie, and the rosticceria for tasty home-cooked dishes and pasta cut to your preferred size! The town has bars, a pizzeria, spaghetteria in addition to the many wonderful local restaurants. There are plenty of opportunities to sample the delicious local Verdicchio and Rosso Conero wines. Montegiorgio has a bank/cashpoint machine, chemist and a hospital.
Other local facilities include horse-riding, walking, quad biking, hang gliding, water sports and cycling, about a 45 minute drive. There is also skiing in the Sibillini Mountains, also 45 minutes away.
There is a golf resort at Conero, about an hour's drive.
The area is dotted with enchanting hill-top villages. The lovely medieval town of Fermo is a 30 minute drive. Visit its 1st century underground complex of filter beds, the Piscina Epuratoria Romana. In the summer months stroll through its winding streets on a Thursday evening for the weekly antiques market. A visit to the elegant town of Macerata (35 minutes) is essential.... even if you don't make it to the renowned summer opera festival.
Visit the Roman amphitheatres at Urbisaglia and Falerone. Don't miss the regional capital, Ascoli Piceno...sip a coffee or an amaro and anisette at the famous Art Nouveau-style Caffe Meletti in the Piazza del Popolo, and watch the comings and goings on the travertine-paved piazza.
Why not spend time at the local Blue Flag beach resort of Porto San Giorgio - break it up with a game of volley ball on the beach, or a deliciously fresh fish lunch. Or venture further up the coast to the stylish Conero seaside resort at Portonovo.
Most of all, enjoy the utter charm and friendliness of the Marchigian people, who are always keen to make your stay a happy one.

Jane has a beautiful villa that is as good as it looks in the photographs! All of our enquiries were promptly addressed by Jane and she even took the trouble of finding child-friendly activities for us. The house is very well equipped with everything that we, two families with children under 5, needed. The pool was used every day even though the water temperature was cool with it being early June. The decor of the house is very simple but very tastefully done and the layout has been carefully thought about. The local area is stunning - Fermo was a great find and the beach at Porto San Giorgio was a hit with us all - especially rounding the day off with a visit to one of the many lovely ice cream parlours. For us, the location, food and wine were the highlights! |
