The Gran Canaria region
The Island of Gran Canaria is situated in the centre of the Canary Islands Archipelago between Tenerife and Fuerteventura. Year-round, spring-like conditions with average monthly temperatures ranging from 18°C in January to 25°C in August make Gran Canaria an ideal destination for both Winter Breaks and Summer Holidays.
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), but despite it's small size, the island is often described as being like a Continent in Miniature. The Dry South contrasts with the Green Pine Forests of the Mountainous interior and it is not unusual for there to be snow on the peaks while Holidaymakers are sunbathing on the beaches below.
Gran Canaria also offers excellent golfing with 6 Golf Courses and a long tradition of the sport on the island.
The island's capital, Las Palmas, dates back to the 15th century and with a population of nearly 400,000 is by far the biggest city in the islands. The colonial architecture, shopping, bars and restaurants make this city well worth a visit.
Puerto de Mogán, on the south-west coast, is the most picturesque resort on the island of Gran Canaria and has what some claim to be the best climate in the world. Summer daytime average temperatures are normally in the high twenties to mid-thirties Celsius
This pedestrianised development of two-storey apartment buildings has roof terraces and gardens bursting with bougainvillea, palm trees, bird-of-paradise flowers, hibiscus and other gloriously colourful plants. It is built around a marina and fishing harbour, which gives the bars and restaurants lining the quayside interesting views and a special ambience.
Channels between the marina and the fishing harbour, passing under arches in the buildings and between the port and the beach, led to it being dubbed the "La Venecia de Canarias" (the "Venice of the Canaries")
Within the last ten years the area behind the beach has been developed, with luxury apartment buildings looking out over the beach of golden sand imported from the Sahara, and beyond to the port and the Atlantic Ocean.
Puerto de Mogan has some excellent restaurants serving locally caught fish, Canarian and Spanish specialities, and for variety there are also some very good Italian, German and Chinese restaurants. Several bars and restaurants have live music on certain nights of the week, mostly local guitaristas to rock and blues (but not too loud!). There are also occasional trad. jazz weeks throughout the year held at the bandstand in the plaza by the marina.
