About this location
The Messenia Region
Ignore the islands, turn left at Athens and make the journey that defeated Nero across the dramatic Corinth canal, for it is in the Peloponnese that you will find staggering landscapes, soaring mountains and the mythical heart of Greece. Fill your lungs with the scent of olives, oranges, cypresses and history. The cast of ancient characters is a classicist's dream – Clytemnestra's murderous welcome of Agamemnon returning home to Mycenae from the Trojan War; Nestor's Palace at Pylos, from which Odysseus's son set out in search of his father; the inspiration for the river Styx and the entrance to Hades. And you don't have to own a well-thumbed Thucydides to feel a thrill driving through the once-mighty city states of Corinth and Sparta.
But it's not all about the ancients: the Peloponnese today is an unspoilt patchwork of dizzying mountains, deep gorges, green valleys and wild flower meadows. The further south you get, the fresher the air, the more splendid the isolation.
The southern tip of the mainland is unspoilt and absolutely authentic. Views across the Messinian Bay are simply stunning and the TAYGETOS mountains spectacular. The whole coastline is dotted with small fishing villages offering fresh fish and local cuisine and wine. It Is both relaxing and idyllic but around every corner there is more to do from swimming, sailing , horse riding and golf.
The prefecture of Messinia, located to the south west of the Peloponnese is a region of magic and beauty. The capital town and main port of Messinia is Kalamata. Kalamata is a very modern town, with excellent infrastructure and local facilities.
The town of Kalamata is dominated by the 13th century castle which was built above it. From the castle, visitors are offered wonderful views towards the sea and sandy beaches, as well as the green flourishing plains.
The famous Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti is located in the town. This church is famous for the nuns who weave the famous Kalamata silk. There are also several other churches around the town which are nice to visit.
In Kalamata, as well as enjoying the beauty of the region and the hospitality of the locals, there is also the archaeological and folklore museum, and the library which houses over 60,000 volumns of work.
