The Normandy / Calvados region
Normandy is famous for its D-Day beaches, of course. Also, butter, cream, and the cheeses: Camembert, Livarot and Pont L'Eveque.
Springtime in Normandy offers vistas of extraordinary flowering apple trees, elderflowers, cowslips and many other flora and fauna. The summer in Normandy is one of the most beautiful, for the most part hot, but not humid. The days seem endless with the sun setting as late as 10:30pm. The autumn is a gentle change, not too cold, walks are a delight picking wild blackberries along the way. Xmas is lovely, less commercial than other parts of the world, the weather is usually mild and crisp, the little hamlets are decorated with lights, the churches with creches (scenes of Jesus in the manger) St. Pierre sur Dives has a live creche with real farm animals every year.
The small hamlets boast beautiful churches, usually a castle or manor, and certainly a charming creperie in which to taste the local speciality: Pommeau (apple cider with Calvados). The tea, however, leaves a lot to be desired, esp. for the British!
Restaurants abound from the small brasserie where one can have a full meal for 10-15€ per person to establishments for the more sophisticated palette. Deauville/Trouville, 45 mins away have an endless assortment of restaurants, the most popular being Le Central and Les Vapeurs for scrumptious seafood such as moules (mussels) and frites (chips).
A walk on the beach after or before dinner is a treat, the houses along the coast mostly dating to the 19th century, villas of great beauty.
Lisieux / St Julien le Faucon area
St. Julien le Faucon is an adorable, small hamlet with a creperie, tabac and newspaper shop, a general food store, a pharmacy. It is two minutes away from the superb listed Manoir de Coupesarte and Chateau Grandchamp.
Ten minutes away is St. Pierre sur Dives, which, on Monday mornings holds one of the oldest and most famous market in Normandy. St. Pierre has a superb abbey dating back to the 12th century, even astrological symbols are carved into the church floor! The first Sunday in every month is an antique lovers paradise in St. Pierre sur Dives, with the hall and surrounding area chock a block with old furniture, linens, paintings, silver, etc.
St. Pierre has excellent restaurants, banks, supermarkets, newspaper shop selling English language papers, tennis courts, etc. 10 minutes in the other direction is the magnificent Chateau de Canon famous for its park and dramatic gardens. Endless walks, drives and bike rides are possible, with manor houses, historic sites, churches, all along the way
