The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

Located in the heart of the Perigord Noir, Le Relais des Roches offers a great opportunity to holiday in the most popular area of the Dordogne. An area well known for its numerous UNESCO heritage sites, castles, chateaux, gardens and caves. The wonderful medieval town of Sarlat and many 'plus beau villages de France’ and are just a short drive away.
Couple this with an in-exhaustible list of activities from canoeing to golf, horse riding to quad biking and so on and it is plain to see why this area is world renowned.
Dramatic rock faces, sparkling rivers, green valleys, Chateaux, medieval villages, prehistoric caves and brilliant sunlight, The Dordogne has been described by some as paradise. As you pass fields of sunflowers and marvel at castles towering at the top of cliffs you begin to understand why! The region is dominated by pre-history, beautiful architecture and gastronomy.
The local markets are full to brimming with some of the best produce France has to offer. Whether you wish to visit the local caves with their drawings dating back 20,000 years, picnic by the banks of the Vezere or Dordogne river, taste the excellent local wines or canoe, these properties are at the centre of it all.
If you are a food lover, then welcome to gastronomic heaven! Visit one of the local markets to stock up on good things to prepare back in your kitchen. If you prefer to eat out, Les Eyzies and the surround has many excellent restaurants.
The Les Eyzies area
Les Eyzies lies in the heart of the stunning Vezere valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty, referred to as the centre of European pre-history, its many caves and archaeological treasures pay testament to the original
inhabitants known as cro-magnon man who occupied the many caves which punctuate the dramatic limestone cliffs some15,000 to 25,000 years ago. Justifiably it is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Apart from its immense sense of history, the town has so much else to offer. The relaxed Monday market, The many restaurants, the pavement cafes, canoe hire to paddle down the Vezere river, fishing; the list is long.
Geographically, Les Eyzies is perfectly situated to visit the world famous attractions of this, the most beautiful part of the Dordogne.

Guestbook for La Maison à Côté
EVERYTHING WE WANTED - A perfect holiday location. Good sized, clean, comfortable accommodation with friendly, yet unobtrusive, owners. A super swimming pool with space to relax - shade or sun, as you wish. The house faces North so remains cool, even on the very hot days. It is all as described by Karen and Rob.
It is almost next door to the small supermarket - but far enough away that there is no disturbance from this. A five minute walk into Les Eyzies - a tourist village with a very interesting museum and lots of restaurants - although we didn't get much further than the first one because it was so friendly and served a varied range of lovely food. They were so friendly they were even providing drinks 'on the house' by the end of our holiday! The Vèzere runs through the valley and it is possible to hire canoes in the village.
Being the centre of the area of so many prehistoric caves with well preserved features, there are many interesting places to visit - too many for one holiday - especially when 'La Maison' is such a nice place to relax.
Chateau Mazivert 'Cave' across the road is well worth calling at - the wine sold there is good - and the 'best' was only 6.50euros a bottle. Be careful though Patric will try to sell you his Chateau!
It was everything we wanted for our holiday - we will return. Pam & Kevin from Manchester
ABSOLUTELY PERFECT - A party of 5 of us stayed here including our one year old daughter in May 09. Absolutely beautiful! The properties are absolutely perfect for a family and contain everything you need. The owners were really helpful both in advance of us arriving and while we were there, ensuring we had everything we needed to make our stay as good as it could be.
The pool is lovely to just lounge by during the day, and is well secure if you have children running about.
Perfect location for visiting Sarlat (a 15 minute drive away) and for exploring the Dordogne in general. Absolutely perfect in every way - and fantastic value.
I'd have no problem in recommending these properties to friends and relatives. - Charles from London
