About this location
The Turkish Aegean Coast region
Kayaköy, or Levissi as it was known to its former inhabitants, was a Greek town until 1923. After the Ottoman Empire drew to close, the governments of Greece and Turkey decided on a population exchange. The aim was for Greece and Turkey to have populations ethnically the same. All Greek Orthodox inhabitants of Turkey were to be exiled to Greece, while all Muslim inhabitants of Greece were to be exiled to Turkey in return.
Kayakoy village has several convenience stores and 20 restaurant and bars throughout the village and is conveniently located for Fethiye Town, Gemiler Beach, Oludeniz beach and Hisaranu. The village is peaceful and quiet however if you are travelling with teenagers they will love the lively but safe nightlife Hisaronu has to offer.
Kayakoy is of great historical importance and in the environment are a lot of activities to do. You can explore the beautiful valley and look around in the cultural and historical interesting objects and places in the area. Walking to Afkula monestry 6km, Gemiler beach 5km, FethIye by the old Roman way 7km, the Old Lycian Way. horse riding in Kayakoy, boattrips, sailing, fishing, diving, swimming, Several beaches nearby - Gemiler beach 5km by dolmus/taxi/rental car or walking, traditional beach also for Turkish people, with view to historical St. Nicholas island. Famous turquoise blue beach of Olu Deniz 9km by dolmus/taxi/rental car or walking (footpath is part of the old Lycian Way). Calis beach by taxi-boat from Fethye to Calis, beautiful sun-setting 9km. Cold water bay, 40 minutes walk across the hill from Kayahouse.am, Kervanseray in Kayakoy (traditional Turkish dance-event), mountain biking and paragliding.
Our Village Kayaköy has many ruins left from the population exchange between Turkey and Greece in 1923. Beautiful countryside in our village for walking, cycling, pony trekking
We have 20 wonderful restaurants and bars dotted about our village. Don't leave Kaya without going to Yalcin's BBQ Restaurant where you bbq your own food.
There are 10 convenience stores around the village. We have a neighbour who can provide horse riding excursion for short (1 Hour) or longer treks.
If you have teenage children they will love Hisanaru which is a lively cheap tourist town: bars, restaurants with live football, clubs, 3d simulators, min fun fair. Approx 10 min on the Dolmus (drive). Kayakoy and Hisanaru are separated by a pine forest and would not know the town is there. So you can relax in the peaceful village and your older children can be well catered for. Hisanaru is safe and there is seldom any trouble and no drug culture.
The teenagers can get a taxi back late at night for approx 20TL (£8)
Gemiler Bay / Beach
This is our local beach. It has stunning scenery and you are away from the crowds of Ölüdeniz. If you're looking for peace and quiet and really calm sea it's perfect.
There are a couple of small beach bars providing freshly cooked food, cold beer, wine and drinks
The kaya dolmus goes all the way to Gemiler every hour in high season.
Fethiye Old Town
Stroll around shaded Paspatur, the old town of Fethiye and visit many shops for all your souvenirs. Quench your thirst at any of café and bars and do try some Gözleme - Turkish pancake..
Fethiye Rock Tombs
Climb up to the main Lycian rock tombs in Fethiye - the tomb of Amyntas - and take in the amazing views of Fethiye marina and the whole of the bay.
Fethiye Boat Trips
They are many 12 Island Boat trip that you might have heard about which are amazing value for money (prices change throughout the season but the maximum is around 25 lira per head) - 8 hours, about 5 swim stops and your lunch included. Alternatively book a private boat trip from Fethiye. Approx £150 for the boat for the day and they usually visit the quieter bays of Fethiye. Another favourite is the boat trip from Fethiye taking you to the Sunday Market at Göcek.
We can call around some of the Captains and book a private boat trip on request.
See the lovely fresh fruit and vegtables at Fethiye Market. Stroll around the hundreds of fake designer clothes, shoes, sunglasses stalls.
The market is every Tuesday in Fethiye, every Sunday in Çalis.
No holiday to our region is complete without a day on the beach at Ölüdeniz; one of the most photographed beaches in the world. The long main beach has the crashing waves or you can swim in the lagoon. The dolmus from Kayakoy will take you down to the private beaches of the lagoon for free if you ask the driver.
Amazing, breathtaking although lots of tourists go there in high season. If you're here early in the season, go on any day except Sunday and it should be free from crowds. You have the gushing rapids and colossal cliff faces to yourself.
Dolmues leave the dolmus station for Saklikent on a regular basis. Alternatively it's approx 50 minute drive.
Çalis Beach Sunset
Calis Beach has one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. The long shingle beach with a row of restaurants and bars behind it may not be your thing but make the effort to go down there if only just to watch the sun go down.
