Lagrenie is an estate (domaine) of ten acres situated at the end of a forest path, surrounded by forest: the Grande Forêt de Domme, near Sarlat and overlooking the Dordogne river. Lagrenie consists of sloping land with beautiful walnut, beech and linden trees, a meadow, a vegetable garden, a chicken coop, a large swimming pool, a private residence and two holiday homes made of centuries old stones and beams: Les Cèpes and Les Girolles.
Lagrenie is strategically situated along the Dordogne river, where the river can be seen for miles and where an old and winding path used to lead down to the river bank.
Lagrenie probably used to be a small castle or fortified building in the 11th or 12th century where tolls were levied to captains, or oxen were cared for after which they could continue pulling ships upstream. Parts from the walls from that time are still visible in the basements of the house.
After that Lagrenie became a settlement, consisting of a few houses and paths. The remnants of that time are still visible all over the land. There are ruins and walls on the terrain and in the forest, and a still functional bread oven with the inscription of the year 1618. On several places are visible entrances to underground passageways, now collapsed but reminding of a dynamic past. The water reservoir where spring water used to flow is still there too.
Until the beginning of the 20th century Lagrenie mostly lived off winegrowing, that dominated the whole region but was ended by a mean disease affecting the grapes. Along with the wine there was a vegetable garden and about ten cows. The neighbour still remembers it all vividly.
Les Cèpes
In the middle of the forests of the Perigord Noir and 10 km from the famous medieval town of Sarlat, lies our holiday home of Les Cèpes on a hill at the end of a forest road. A wonderful calm place without any traffic, overlooking the Dordogne river making its way through the valley below along quaint villages such as Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac. From Les Cèpes you can walk along a forest path to the river below (about 1,5 km) and several little beaches are within a 5 minute drive. The house is 2 km away from the village of Groléjac, where there is a bakery, a butcher, a supermarket and several restaurants. Groléjac also has a lake with a beautiful sandy beach (Plan d’eau). In the picturesque town of Sarlat (accessible by a bicycle path that used to be the train track to Sarlat) you can find many shops, restaurants, lovely markets and street festivals in summer.
There are plenty of sights to see within a 15 km radius: Beautiful villages, caves, castles and gardens. Places like Rocamadour and Cahors are less than an hour away.
From the house you can go on nice walks and cycling tours, and you can go canoeing on the Dordogne river of course. The swimming pool is 6 by 12 meters, and there are sun beds. On the grounds are also a table tennis table and a large trampoline.

Wine & Dine
There are dozens of restaurants in the nearby medieval town of Sarlat, and in the high season the many terraces there are pleasantly bustling. The area is mostly known for its walnuts and ducks. The villages and towns nearby have plenty of restaurants in several price ranges, from fine dining to authentic meals at the farm table. Cahors and Bergerac are known for their excellent wines and there are several chateaus that organise tastings for these wines.
