The Madeira region
Madeira islands are located in Atlantic ocean, 1000 km from Portugal mainland and consist of 2 inhabited islands -Madeira and Porto Santo- and 2 groups of non-inhabited islands - Ilhas Desertas and Ilhas Selvagens.
Madeira islands are famous with its mild climate, the average winter temperature is +18C, the average summer temperature is +24C. Madeira islands are the subtropical islands with green and always blooming scenery. The capital city Funchal, which celebrates its 500 aniversary in 2008, is built in large amphitheatre from the ocean to uphills.
Funchal / Praia Formosa area
There are a lot of festivals organized in Madeira - Carnival in February, Flower festival 2 weeks after Easter, Atlantic festival in June, Wine festival in September etc.
You can visit amazing Madeira gardens like Monte palace garden, botanical garden, orchid garden, garden of Quinta Palheiro Fereiro etc., Madeira Story Museum, beautiful coastal villages or Rabacal waterfalls, to choose the levada walks or to spend the wonderful time on the board of the ship Santa Maria which is built as the copy of Christofor Columbus famous ship.
The children will enjoy a day in aquapark in Santa Cruz.
The beach Praia Formosa offers visitors three small sandy beaches and a large pebbled beach. The water quality is certified by the Blue Flag and a team of lifeguards is watching over the safety of the bathers.The eastern end of Praia Formosa has a series of semi-artifical rock pools that offer public swimming. The fish restaurant Doca do Cavacas nearby the pools has fantastic ocean views and is highly recommended.
The new shopping centre MADEIRA FORUM with many shops and restaurants is only in 15 min walking distance. Convenient connection to city centre by free courtesy bus or public buses.
How to get there
TAP PORTUGAL direct flights from London Gatwick (www.flytap.com) or EASYJET direct flights from London Gatwick or Stansted (www.easyjet.com) is the fastest and cheapest way how to reach Madeira. The apartment is easy and cheap to reach from airport by aerobus which stops just in front of the entrance (5 EUR/person). If you fly with TAP PORTUGAL the transfer by aerobus is free of charge. It's possible to organize your transfer from and to airport by car upon request. If you rent a car choose the way to Funchal - Estrada Monumental-Praia Formosa-Atlantic Gardens.
